Stewed Soft-Boiled Eggs for Breakfast.

A/n: Compared to simple boiled eggs, soft-boiled and stewed eggs are justice.

Scarlet Lynx’s mornings don’t start particularly early. Most everyone appears for breakfast around 7. The people in charge of cooking must wake up even earlier, but for Yack, who grew up on a farm, the lifestyle of waking up at 6 and still having plenty of time is so easy that it’s surprising. Anyway, it was normal to get up at 4 when he was helping out at his friend’s family’s farm.

And so, Yack woke at 6 today as well, heading to the dining hall. … Is the plan, but he thought of dropping by Yuri’s room first. He was worried whether a complete newcomer who had just joined yesterday would be able to properly wake up at this time. … … Normally, he’d often see his seniors, who were like THAT in all sorts of ways, oversleep.

“Yuri, are you awake?”

“Ah, Yack, good morning.”

“Good morning. Did you sleep well?”

“Yes. I slept really well. I was a little worried over whether I’d be able to wake up, but it looks like my internal clock is working, so I’m relieved~.”

Towards the cheerfully smiling Yuri, Yack also smiled back with an, ‘I see.’ He had absolutely no idea what the ‘internal clock’ that came from Yuri’s mouth meant, but he ignored it. Yesterday, he had heard that Yuri seems to be a foreigner who was whisked away from afar by a trap, after all.

As for Yuri, he was seriously thinking that he was happy that he woke up. For Yuri, who lived a modern Japaneses lifestyle, he was uneasy about whether he’d properly wake up in an environment where alarm clocks don’t exist. But happily, his internal clock worked properly and he was able to get up safely. It seems that Yuri, who went to school by train up through high school and woke up before 6 everyday, had it ingrained into his body.

The two people fell in line and headed to the kitchen. There are still people sleeping, so they didn’t talk. They were also careful not to step too loudly. And then, the first thing Yuri did when they reached the kitchen, was open the refrigerator. And then he took a large bowl out from within it.

“Yuri, is that what you made yesterday?”

“Yes. I was thinking a change of pace would be good.”

Yack checked over the daily portion of bread, milk, and eggs that were delivered, and put them away into each of their spots. Today’s bread seems to be bread rolls. The bread is the daily special, so there are days where it’s loaf bread, and days where it’s bread rolls. Yack personally thinks bread rolls make things simpler, so he likes it. Since he has to cut the loaf bread.

Within the bowl Yuri took out was a black liquid that was almost overflowing. It wasn’t anything special. He’d soaked boiled eggs in a liquid made of soy sauce and sake. He was thinking of making simple, cheat version stewed eggs. For the real thing he’d probably make a broth and season it properly with all sorts of things, boiling the eggs in it to make stewed eggs. But at Yuri’s house, the Kugimiya house, they cheat stewed eggs by making a soy-sauce based liquid in a bowl or tupperware, and leaving boiled eggs in it overnight. It gives it a fairly normal taste.

He was worried that there hadn’t been enough types of seasonings. At Yuri’s home, they’d simply use mentsuyu (soy sauce, sake, mirin, and bonito flake based noodle broth) and leave it at that. But mentsuyu, as it was, had all sorts of seasonings in it. He’d also tried it with soy sauce ponzu (citrus and vinegar based sauce w/or w/out soy sauce). That was refreshing and delicious. But this place here had neither of them. He used soy sauce and, although there wasn’t any cooking sake, he had found something that had a similar smell to refined sake in the cabinet, so he used that. … As expected, he didn’t want to use wine for stewed eggs.

“Uwah, the eggs are brown.”

“I hope the flavor has soaked in properly.”

He rolled the stewed eggs out onto a large dish. Yack, who had never seen anything but pure white boiled eggs, furrowed his brows. However, to Yuri, it had the color that showed that the flavor had likely soaked in well. He took a smaller egg and tried splitting it in half on top of a small plate. The flavor had soaked in well indeed.

“Here, Yack. For taste testing.”

“Eh? Ah, un.”

Yuri chewed on the stewed egg. Somehow able to keep from saying that it doesn’t look like food, Yack put it in his mouth. In the first place, boiled eggs are dry and tasteless, and not satisfying. Even so, they were easy to make so he often made them for breakfast. When he said that, Yuri had said, ‘Let’s put a little more effort in.’

The stewed egg had absorbed the flavor of the soy sauce and gave off an exquisite flavor. Yack was startled. He had thought it was just a boiled egg that had gotten darker. However, that wasn’t all it was. It had acquired a strong flavor. To the point where he ate it without thinking.

And even that wasn’t all there was to it.

“This, the yolk is soft!”

“Yes. It’s soft boiled.”

“Why!? How were you able to make it so gooey!?”

“You can do it by boiling it for less time.”

“Is that true!?”

It was a soft, delicious boiled egg that Yack had never eaten before. It wasn’t just because it had taken on the flavor of soy sauce; the yolk was soft-boiled, so it was soft and gooey. He’d never eaten such a delicious boiled egg before.

Yuri took normal boiled eggs out from another bowl. … He thought there might be people who wouldn’t accept stewed eggs, so he had prepared normal boiled eggs without any modifications. Of course these were also soft boiled. He heard they’ve been having hard boiled eggs all the time, so he thought it would make for a nice change in pace. Also, Yuri was personally on the soft-boiled side.

Furthermore, they were normal boiled eggs, but these were soaked in salt water over night. … If the salt water wasn’t very strong, then it would have a good level of salty flavor even if it was soaked overnight. It was his mother’s wisdom to avoid having to add salt when bringing it along in a lunchbox.

“I’m sorry there’s only bread, milk, and eggs…”

“… It’s impossible, Yuri. There aren’t any ingredients.”

“Yes. That’s why I tried making soft boiled eggs and stewed eggs, at least.”

At Yack’s vacant gaze, Yuri smiled bitterly. There’s nothing they can do without any ingredients. At any rate, the food made for last night had all been eaten up. Whether it was kakiage, croquettes, or cream soup, they were all gone. … The moment Ali finished eating, a fierce battle broke out the instant they heard there was leftovers. Yuri smiled while he fried the food, but that turmoil was on the level of a grand festival.

Thanks to that, the ingredients remaining were the bread, milk, and eggs that are delivered en masse. As well as everyone’s well-acquainted potatoes. And so, Yuri peeled the skin off the potatoes in order to boil them in salt. Yack followed Yuri’s instructions and boiled water, putting them in a slightly larger pot.

“…Yuri, what are you doing with this?”

“Yes, well, it’s a bit sparse, so I thought we’d add salt-boiled potatoes too.”

“Not steamed potatoes?”

“Yes. We’re boiling them. By adding salt, we can eat them as is, right?”

Yack watched the happily smiling Yuri with startled eyes. He had never thought of eating potatoes this way. He’d steam potatoes, or bake them appropriately. He didn’t really know what ‘salt boiled’ meant, but his eyes opened wide once he ate the boiled potatoes. The potatoes that had just a bit of saltiness to them were soft and fluffy, and very delicious.

Then they set the food out on the counter on the dining hall side where the tables were lined up, in the space in front of the kitchen. It seems that the food is always placed on the kitchen side, but Yuri was thinking of making it self-serve. Anyway, he had no idea how much one person would eat. He thought it was better for them to get it themselves.

Two different colored boiled eggs, white and brown. A large amount of salt boiled potatoes. The freshly baked bread that was delivered. As for the milk, it’s chilling in the refrigerator, so they’ll prepare it to be poured when people come. That was all the preparations needed for breakfast.

And so, the two of them quickly finished their own breakfasts during the time no one came. While laughing at Yack, whose eyes became dots at the taste of the salt flavored boiled eggs, Yuri enjoyed a simple breakfast of potatoes, boiled eggs, bread, and milk.

And then.

“Hey, these eggs, can I have another!?”

“One of each kind per person.”

“Yuri, please! Because these brown ones are super delicious!”

“Other people will lose their share, so please give up. The potatoes, bread, and milk are free for refills.”

In the face of the smiling Yuri, the vanquished slumped his shoulders and left. Giving a sideways glance, Yack thought, ‘Well of course it’s like this…’ Yuri didn’t think anything of it, but they were unbelievably, way too delicious. All the people who usually made faces like, ‘… Boiled eggs again?’ were now rushing for those very boiled eggs. Furthermore, even though they were initially put off by the color of the stewed eggs, they were told to try both, and when they ate what was placed on their plate, they called for seconds one after another. … Also, no one was able to get seconds.

After all, they had raw eggs, but they couldn’t make stewed eggs. It takes time for the flavor to soak in, so they were unable to make them again starting from now. And so, Yuri only offered seconds of the potatoes, bread, and milk. No matter how much they asked, he wasn’t shaken, since he was thinking about how to properly divide the meal among everyone.

Everyone, not just Yack, was dumbfounded by Yuri’s firm attitude. No matter how frantic or tenacious they were, no on could stand up to him. Everyone was taken aback at the complete opposite attitude from his normal, fluffy aura.

… Yuri is able to completely drive away those wanting seconds because he had similar experiences during the time when he had school provided lunches.

Lunches were provided in elementary school, and Yuri’s school had the normal system of taking turns to be in charge of the school lunches. For school lunches, the side dishes get fought over. During that, Yuri told the tyrannical kid ‘leader,’ who said that only his portion should be a lot, “Everyone else’s share will be gone, so no,” and became the brave man who stood against him. That was the only time everyone in the class thought Yuri was a hero.

And so, another person was defeated with Yuri’s smile and, “One of each kind per person,” returning to his table in low spirits. But in the middle of all the fuss, there was a man calmly and peacefully savoring the taste of both kinds of soft boiled eggs. It was Brooke.

Based on the fact that last night’s delicious dinner was due to Yuri, Brooke judged that there’d be something this morning as well. And thus, he asked how many eggs he could have upfront. When he was told one of each, he nodded obediently, split them in half and tasted each, and while smacking his lips over the deliciousness, he ate. This was the kind of foresight an adventurer needed. … In other words, the ones making a fuss over no seconds are those apprentices who are still being taught.

Yuri never thought that simple stewed eggs and salt-flavored boiled eggs (both soft boiled) would be this popular.

A/n: You might be thinking, “How poor are their eating habits?”

It’s not just that the other world’s cooking is less developed than Japan,

the people cooking also aren’t chefs.

Also, the main people who are cooking are the young apprentices.

Please sympathize with them… ←

I am awaiting your opinions and impressions.
