1.2 - heartless

My lips started to tremble, and I glared at Zhang Xinwei:

“You had sex with Chang Wenhang behind my back, and you both fooled me for two years. Why don’t I have the right to get revenge? I’m not a sister, well why didn’t you think of our relationship when you had sex with him?!”

Zhang Xinwei’s face turned dark:

“We aren’t the ones that are wrong, you should’ve told us. But you suddenly disappeared and caught us in the act without a warning. It seems that between the three of us, you were the cruelest!”

I was speechless. My emotions were getting out of control, and my tears kept falling. I felt like a coward that couldn’t say anything back.

Xu Lu angrily went up and hit Zhang Xinwei. But Zhang Xinwei looked coldly towards me and said:

“Liang Zijin, if I still feel a little bit remorseful, then I will return everything I owed you starting from that night. If we ever meet again, pretend that we don’t know each other!”

And just like she walked away from our sight in her high heels.

Xu Lu was boiling with anger, and my face was covered in tears. At a fast pace, Dong Jianan pulled us towards the Luo Shi building. While walking, she said:

“Ladies, I’m begging you, please pull yourselves together. Don’t let her mess up our plans!”

Sobbing, I said to Xu Lu:

“Don’t mind me, quickly go to your interview with Dong Jianan.”

In response, Xu Lu was harsh, and her words were upsetting:

“Wipe your tears! If you aren’t interviewing, then neither am I! I’m so angry right now!”

The front of the Luo Shi building was crowded with people. It looked as if all the recent graduates were gathered here at the same time. It is required that we attend first tier universities to get into Luo Shi. So, amongst the tide of people, most have a masters, Ph.D., or are in a postdoctoral position. Everybody wants to get in Luo Shi because we want a secure and lucrative job.

I didn’t think that I would have met Zhang Xinwei here. These days, Xu Lu and Dong Jianan have done so much for me and I didn’t want to burden them at this moment. I wiped away my tears and ignored the pain in my heart and walked towards Luo Shi together with them.

The Luo family owned most of the floors in this building, but Luo Shi currently takes up 10 floors. The others are rented out to other companies. Xu Lu, Dong Jianan, and I took the elevator up. In between floors, we meet men and women just like us taking interviews. We were around the same age, each observing and probing each other.

My eyes were red, Xu Lu had a long face on, and Dong Jianan was quietly mumbling to herself. Leaning a little closer, I heard her practicing her English introduction.

It took less than 10 minutes for the elevator to reach the sixtieth floor. When the elevator doors opened, a swarm of people walked out. Xu Lu and I followed by the last three people including Dong Jianan.

We quickly followed the crowd to the interview area. My eyes were still filled with tears, causing my vision to be blurry and unclear. It was Dong Jianan who was wearing glasses that spotted the interview area for translators. She pulled me and Xu Lu in that direction.

We saw that there were still few people waiting around as the three of us arrived. I saw a beautiful woman, wearing a Gucci outfit covered in flowers and high heels worn by celebrities, coming out of a room. Sweeping over the crow of people, she called out:

“Liang Zijin, who is Liang Zijin?”

Everyone was looking at each other in dismay, not knowing who the person being called out was.

Xu Lu and Dong Jianan looked at me in astonishment, asking the former:

“Zi Jin, are they calling for you?”
