Morning—
Bai Zhi covered her mouth, holding back the bile that was rising in her throat. The sight before her eyes brought about wave after wave of nausea.
On the open area in front of the living quarters, lay the ashen corpse of a man. The man’s clothes were completely stripped away and thrown aside. He laid on his back with his arms and legs splayed apart like the human embodiment of the character, “大” [big]. Fresh blood seeped from the body and formed a large pool covering the floor. His limbs were still attached but his internal organs had been carved out and strewn across the floor. Even his family jewels had been cut off and tossed to the side along with two jumbo dice— everything was stained a blood-red.
Yesterday, those two dice had been in her body. She felt disgusted and scared, but deep down, there was also a glimmer of joyful vindication.
Zhao Zixun’s expression was dark. He clasped her waist tightly and used his body to block her view of the horrific sight.
“Wh-Who did it?” she asked in a trembling voice.
Zhao Zixun shook his head, “The scene is very familiar.”
“Familiar?” Bai Zhi probed.
A teenager’s voice suddenly cut in, “It’s very similar to a scene from a year ago. There was also a corpse lying here just like this with its organs carved out and scattered all over the floor.”
Bai Zhi turned her head towards the voice. It was the young man named Xiang Chen. He was half a head taller than her, thin, pale, with a mop of untidy curly hair pushed haphazardly behind his ears. He wore a cozy-looking oversized sweater, which made his entire being look lazy and carefree.
Her mind suddenly shot back to the scene of her rape which he bore witness to yesterday. Her face flushed and she hid behind Zhao Zixun. But even still, she couldn’t help asking, “Who did it that time?”
“It was Li Xiao,” Zhao Zixun replied.
Her face suddenly lost all color, “Li Xiao… He—Didn’t he escape from prison?”
“It’s uncertain whether he escaped or not. There are a lot of traps and pitfalls surrounding the prison, it’s not that easy to get out. He may be biding his time nearby,” Zhao Zixun speculated.
The youth lazily spoke, “Although the methods were the same, it’s unknown whether it was him or not. It is possible that this is a copycat.”
“Were you the one who helped Li Xiao escape from prison?” Bai Zhi blurted out. She had wanted to ask this question from the start.
Xiang Chen glanced at her, his gaze faltering. He forced his eyes to stay on her face and not slide down, “Yup, that was me.”
“You…… Why are you still here if you have a way of escaping?”
“While I can hack the program to open the secret security door,” the boy lazily stretched his arms up, “But as you can see, I am very thin and not very strong, physically…” He paused for a second and, for a reason unknown by anyone, he added, “But I am very able at carrying out regular, everyday activities. It’s just, compared to the beast that is Li Xiao, my physical strength is not very good.”
Bai Zhi nodded in understanding, “So?”
“Why haven’t Di Qing and the others come to clean up the scene yet?” Zhao Zixun suddenly intercepted their conversation.
“They’ll be here soon. They should be checking surveillance right now.” Xiang Chen’s deduction was very calm and coherent, “But when Li Xiao escaped, I had already completely destroyed the system.”
“Didn’t Di Qing say he was going to collect Li Xiao’s corpse today? Why……” Why does it seem a little ironic now? She pondered.
“I don’t know why they said that either,” the boy was also confused, but he went on to explain, “Li Xiao is the only one who is capable of breaking through the mechanisms installed outside. He is like a wild animal who runs solely on his instincts alone. Those rapid-fire machine-guns have nothing on him. As long as he has faith and is given an opening, he can charge his way out of here. Everyone knows this.”
“What kind of faith can he have?” Bai Zhi tried to recall Li Xiao’s character from her memories but discovered that her only impression of him was from that one savage and painful encounter. She shuddered at the memory. She shook her head to remove him from her thoughts.
The boy did not continue to speak.
“Why are you in prison?” Bai Zhi hasn’t met anyone who had answered all of her questions in such a candid and straightforward manner, so she couldn’t help asking some more.
The boy’s face suddenly fell.
“I was thrown in here by my deadbeat father. He was deceived by some people and believed this would be a good place for me… so gullible.” His complexion looked extremely bad.
“Don’t act all innocent. The shit you pulled… Don’t you know how long you’d be locked up for in a federal prison?” Zhao Zixun sneered at him. He caressed Bai Zhi’s cheek and gently kissed her, “Let’s go. There’s nothing to see here.”
Bai Zhi nodded and her head and hummed in agreement.
The youth carefully watched their figures disappear. Seeing Zhao Zixun constantly shower Bai Zhi’s face with kisses, he couldn’t move his eyes away. He kept remembering the sight of the girl’s body pressed against the glass in front of him. He felt a rush of heat from below. He turned his gaze to the wretched corpse and forced himself to think about something else.
“Li Xiao, was it really you?”
