By the time they realized that there was no way out, it was already too late.
The tight metal cage surrounding the prison rose straight up to the sky; it sealed off the very notion of escape. Within these walls, only monsters roamed.
This place was completely closed off from the outside—they lived in an isolated world under a different set of rules.
There were no clues, not even a single ray of hope for freedom.
Every single person here has a long rap sheet consisting of only the worst sins against humanity. They’re the dregs of society. They came to this so-called prison in order to avoid prosecution in the real world but ironically, they ended up getting caught in the wires of some unknown puppet master with no escape in sight.
There’s no point resisting the guards; their situation was not much different. They were just prisoners under a different name.
This was a well-established fact.
They can only speculate on the inner workings of the prison operation and the intentions of that mysterious puppet master but even they had no way of forging a path out.
The prisoners eyed each other cautiously inside the assembly hall. There was a delicate balance. Currently, no one disturbed it.
“When all but one prisoner have been… eliminated, his crimes will be absolved and the prison gates will open.”
The two prison guards announced the victory conditions to end the game. Their tones were grim and calculating.
In fact, they knew that more than one person could leave, but they secretly left a back door open for themselves. If they can cause a rift between the prisoners and cause them to slaughter each other, then they can reap the rewards of the game and retreat unscathed. Who wouldn’t take this kind of win-win situation?
They smirked at each other thinking that they were being so clever. They never imagined that someone could see right through their deception.
The doctor watched them coldly as if observing through the eyes of an outsider.
Within the crowd of prisoners, several pairs of eyes stared at the duplicitous guards with sly glints in their eyes.
Just because the rules were announced, did not mean they were strictly enforced.
The prisoners were skeptical of the prison guards’ words; some even disregarded them completely. These prisoners did not take action but waited patiently—they waited for the first person to break, and they waited for the perfect opportunity to arise. They looked for loopholes in the prison’s defense so that when the time came, they’re ready to leave at a moment’s notice.
The first person to escape disappeared without a trace.
It was almost as if he disappeared into thin air. In an instant, he had completely cut off all contact and connections to the prison.
The guards anxiously searched high and low for the escaped prisoner. They were afraid he would steal the winning spot in the game and pocket all the rewards.
Others were excited and eager to try and follow suit. They even cooperated to plan a mass prison break together.
Three days later, the escapee was returned to the prison in an unrecognizable state.
His body was placed in front of the gate with his skull crushed and brain matter splattered across the ground.
It was a brutal murder not committed by any mechanism of the prison system but by the hands of another human being.
This time, the prisoners became mired in a true panic. Finally, they settled down and began to think seriously about the one iron-clad rule—
The victory condition.
TL Woes:
Because this chapter was so short, I will be posting another chapter within the next day or two. See updated Translation Schedule for more details.
It’s another side story chapter, so the NU bots might not catch it when I post. I’ll to try to remember to manually add it to NU… Y’all usually beat me to it anyways. It’ll definitely be out before Chapter 55 though, so you could just wait to read them both at the same time.
