A dark shadow lunged out and attacked. Zhao Zixun sidestepped, narrowly avoiding the assailant, and grabbed the man by the neck. They tumbled heavily onto the ground with Zhao Zixun on top.

The man glared up—his eyes were bloodshot and had a crazed look about them, almost feral. There were strained blue veins crawling along his temples and dark bruises mottling his otherwise spectral face. However, the thing that was most conspicuous of all was the fresh blood staining his teeth and lips.

The person who had tried to ambush them was not Zheng Ze but Li Xiao.

Bai Zhi gasped in surprise. She rushed forward to check his condition. Li Xiao was tied up like a zongzi, yet he could still attack! Then, the scream just now…

She turned her gaze to the side. Sure enough, it was Zheng Ze, who had entered before them, lying on the ground with a big gaping hole in his neck. Fresh blood was still bubbling out of the open wound. The thick substance saturated his long hair, sticking the long locks together into a congealed mass.

A sudden chill permeated her body and she shuddered.

Li Xiao wheezed, then suddenly resumed his fierce struggle again.

“Find a way to soothe him” Zhao Zixun instructed. “We can’t untie his ropes until he calms down.”

Bai Zhi lowered her head. She didn’t know where to start. His eyes were still glowing with a murderous light—they stared manically into the void, as if he’s seeing something they can’t see.

“Li Xiao…” she whispered, “Li Xiao…”

She vaguely remembered that he liked to hear her say his name.

Bai Zhi leaned down. She pressed one hand against his chest and gently brushed aside the bloody hair from his forehead with her other hand.

Confusion clouded his face and a myriad of emotions flickered through his eyes. He gnashed his teeth as if enduring unbearable pain. The bulging veins along his temples jumped and became even more distinct—his expression was truly hideous to behold.

“Li Xiao, Li Xiao… Snap out of it, you’re safe…” She kept talking in a gentle, soothing voice. Inside, she felt anything but; her palms were clammy with sweat.

Slowly, his eyes began to focus.

Zhao Zixun walked over to the unconscious Zheng Ze and checked his vitals. He crossed Zheng Ze’s arms behind his back and tied them together with an extra piece of rope that he found.

When he finished securing the tall man, the sight he beheld was Bai Zhi tenderly nursing a quiet Li Xiao.

He lit a cigarette and drew in a deep breath. Smoke slowly blew out of his flared nostrils.

“Let’s go.”

“Huh? Go? Don’t you need to untie Li Xiao first?” Bai Zhi asked with a doubtful expression.

Zhao Zixun shook his head. He grabbed each of the men by their respective bindings and towed them out of the building.

“We can’t stay here for too long. Gu Ze, Xiao Yang and Gao Qiu will definitely be back. We need to find a secluded place and make Zheng Ze talk.”

Cold moonlight penetrated through the thin clouds and cold mist. The entire prison was coated in a pale silvery light.

The thin uniform did not protect against the drop in temperature, and Bai Zhi shivered as she followed behind Zhao Zixun.

She watched Zhao Zixun drag two grown men from the factory building to the dormitory and straight up four flights of stairs. He made it look like nothing—he wasn’t even out of breath.

He threw them down in a small crawlspace in the attic and wiped the dust from his hands. “Ah-Zhi, you should leave.” Zhao Zixun turned to face her.

Standing under the pale moonlight with his tall, bloodstained figure—he looked just a like vengeful god descending upon the mortal realm.

He was pushing her away again…

“I…” Bai Zhi looked at Zhao Zixun not knowing what to say. Shaking her head, she tried to argue, “Zhao Zixun, I won’t leave… You can’t keep me in the dark forever… I want to get out of here. I know you have things you need to accomplish, but I don’t think our two goals are mutually exclusive… Let’s work together. You help me, and I’ll help you.”

Annoyed, Zhao Zixun puffed on the cigarette, “Listen here, this isn’t a playground. You have no idea what you’re getting yourself into. There will be bloodbaths on a scale that you have never seen or experienced. Even if you leave this place, you’ll still carry these psychological burdens for the rest of your life.”

“I’m not as fragile as you think. Besides, I don’t think psychological burdens are my biggest problem right now… Who knows if I’ll even be able to leave this place alive.” Bai Zhi stated the bitter truth.

Zhao Zixun opened his mouth to speak again, but she approached him and wrapped her slender arms around his waist. Burying her face against his warm chest, she listened to his steady heartbeat.

“I…… I-I have always wanted to thank you, Zhao Zixun… I really don’t know what I’d do without you… Or what would’ve become of me—” she trailed off.

The tenseness in Zhao Zixun body eased.

He chuckled—his broad chest rumbled with the sound. He pulled her tight against his body. Discarding the cigarette butt, he pinched her lips and kissed her deeply. His tongue invaded every inch of her mouth.

The deep kiss made her legs go weak, and she leaned heavily against him.

It was a long time before Zhao Zixun released her. A thin wire stretched between their lips before breaking in midair.

Somehow, they had migrated during their kiss. Now, he had her sandwiched against the wall with his scorching erection grinding into her belly.

“Just wanted to say thank you, hm?” Zhao Zixun’s hands were still covered in dirt and grime; they gently stroked her tender cheeks. His eyes were both gentle and affectionate. He stared at her kiss-drunken expression and swollen red lips.

There was barely an inch of space between them. As he spoke, his breath tingled against her ears. It aroused a pleasant sensation. He bit her lip.

“Mm… Just thank you…” Her face was already beet red. She rubbed her cheek against his palm shyly and buried her face into his chest again.
