Tomorrow, Chen Fei must go to the city hospital to rescue Mu Meiqing. Leaving the building and the neighborhood, Chen Fei knows that the danger he faces could multiply several times, even tenfold!
He still doesn't know what kind of help the system can provide, so he is eager to complete the task of killing 50 zombies to activate the system and test it. Perhaps the system is incredibly powerful and might give him some advanced technological weapons, which would make it easier for him to plan the rescue mission for tomorrow.
Chen Fei's mind began to race. He glanced at the zombies who were repeatedly smashing their heads against the glass, and a bold plan began to form in his mind. However, the first step of this plan is whether he can successfully close the fire door of Unit 2. If he can close the fire door, he can test the feasibility of his plan.
"Jin, you step back a bit and stand next to the fire door of Unit 1. If you see a large number of zombies coming, open the fire door and quickly go inside. I have a plan that should easily deal with these zombies, but the first step is to close the fire door of Unit 2."
Chen Fei whispered this into Nan Gong Jin's ear. Being so close, he could smell her perfume and even feel the warmth of her skin, making his heart flutter as if tiny bugs were crawling inside.
Nan Gong Jin didn't ask for details about Chen Fei's plan. She just said, "Be careful," and began to slowly retreat towards Unit 1.
Chen Fei turned his head back to the fire door of Unit 2. After taking two deep breaths, he slowly approached the fire door, hearing his controlled breathing and the rapid beating of his heart.
When he reached the fire door, Chen Fei didn't act immediately. Instead, he peeked inside. There were three zombies in the corridor, two of them swaying against the wall, and the third one was facing away from Chen Fei, about three meters from the door.
Seeing this, Chen Fei breathed a sigh of relief. He began to carefully examine the fire door and confirmed that it was only blocked by a stone at the bottom. Chen Fei quickly leaned out, moved the stone, and then rushed to close the fire door.
The expected sound of the fire door slamming shut didn't happen. Instead, it was jammed by the arm of a zombie lying at the door. As Chen Fei pushed the zombie's arm, the three zombies in the corridor noticed him, let out a roar, and charged towards the fire door.
"Close it for me!"
Chen Fei growled, using his right foot to push the zombie's arm aside and ramming his body against the door. Just before the nearest zombie reached him, Chen Fei managed to close the fire door. He could clearly feel the impact of the zombies hitting the door, the force of which was transmitted through the door to his body.
Chen Fei didn't dare to make a sound and kept his body pressed against the fire door. This fire door opened outward into the fire corridor, which was different from the stairwell. If the lock was broken, the zombies could easily break through the door.
Chen Fei held his breath and tried to reduce the force he was applying to the fire door. The zombies inside continued to bang against it, causing it to vibrate, but it didn't show any signs of breaking.
Chen Fei breathed a sigh of relief, genuinely impressed by the quality of the fire door. He didn't dare to waste time and first retrieved the steel arrows from the heads of the nearby zombies. Then, he walked to the 1302 room, where a large number of zombies were gathered, right in front of the bedroom window.
Seeing Liu Lang's success, Nan Gong Jin also walked over from the fire door of Unit 1, acknowledging Chen Fei's bravery.
"Not bad, Xiao Fei! I didn't expect you to be a reliable man in a crisis."
Chen Fei wiped the cold sweat from his forehead and chuckled.
"Hehe... Jin, it's not too late for you to discover my excellence. You still have a chance!"
Nan Gong Jin deliberately acted coy. Just as Chen Fei was feeling proud, she pinched his ear.
"Hey... stop! Jin, let's focus on the task at hand. It'll be dark soon!"
Nan Gong Jin released her hand and huffed, then looked at the zombies still smashing against the glass.
"Tell me your plan first."
Chen Fei's face showed a smug expression. He turned to the fire door of Unit 2, picked up the stone that had jammed the door, and glanced at the glass that was already cracked from the zombies' impacts. He then threw the stone at the window with all his might.
With a loud crash, a large hole appeared in the glass. The presence of living beings made the zombies even more frenzied. However, Nan Gong Jin then witnessed an incredible and almost speechless scene.
Without the glass blocking them, the zombies, due to their large movements, pushed each other out of the window. One after another, they fell from the window.
This was inspired by the few zombies that had fallen from the fire corridor earlier. The zombies' intelligence was basically negative, and they only knew how to move forward. The fire corridor was about two meters from the window.
When the glass broke, the living beings' presence would drive the zombies into a frenzy, causing them to rush out of the window without hesitation.
Chen Fei glanced at Nan Gong Jin with a smug look. However, just as he turned his head, a zombie suddenly charged out. Due to the force of its charge, it was pushed further out than the others and managed to grab the railing of the fire corridor with its hands.
Nan Gong Jin, witnessing this, immediately pushed Chen Fei away and stabbed the zombie's head with her katana.
Chen Fei realized that the zombies still retained the flexibility of humans and could jump. A two-meter distance from the window to the fire corridor was within their reach.
However, Chen Fei soon noticed that not every zombie could grab the railing. They didn't adjust their movements or have the intention to grab the railing. It was a matter of luck and probability.
Chen Fei wiped the cold sweat from his forehead. If the zombies could all jump over, he and Nan Gong Jin would be in danger.
In just a few moments, over a dozen zombies fell from the window. Soon, a second lucky zombie managed to grab the railing.
This time, before Nan Gong Jin could act, Chen Fei pulled out his M9 multi-function bayonet and stabbed the zombie's right eye, destroying its brain and causing it to fall like a free-falling object.
The M9 multi-function bayonet was designed with ergonomics in mind, making it the pinnacle of bayonet and saber design. It was not only sharp and durable but also had a fully insulated blade. The blade was 6 millimeters thick and had a small hole for attaching to the sheath, turning it into a wire cutter capable of cutting through standard thickness metal sheets and bars. The handle had a slot for a bottle opener, and the serrated blood groove on the back could be used as a saw, easily cutting through pine boards and hardwood sticks, even aircraft shells. The most important advantage was its compact and lightweight design, making it easy to operate.
Soon, the zombies in room 1302 had lost half their numbers due to their suicidal charges, and Chen Fei and Nan Gong Jin were mostly just watching.
From the fact that the system didn't activate after the deaths of over a dozen zombies, Chen Fei deduced that these zombies were not within the system's calculation. He estimated that he still needed to kill eight to nine more zombies to complete his task.
There were still about a dozen zombies in room 1302, with seven or eight trapped in the kitchen and the rest in the living room and other rooms. Once the zombies in the kitchen were dealt with, Chen Fei and Nan Gong Jin could attempt a frontal assault to clear the remaining zombies.
Chen Fei fished out a few steel balls from his backpack and wanted to test their effectiveness.
After loading the steel balls, Chen Fei fired at the kitchen window. The steel balls easily penetrated the glass and embedded themselves in the forehead of a zombie behind it. At such close range, the steel balls didn't penetrate the zombie's skull, giving Chen Fei a preliminary estimate of their power.
The kitchen window was the smallest in the room and, due to the presence of a countertop, the zombies couldn't use their heads to smash the glass. Chen Fei felt a bit anxious. If this continued, he and Nan Gong Jin would still face over a dozen zombies on the 13th floor of Unit 2, which would be very dangerous. Without a solid plan, Chen Fei wouldn't make such a decision.
After firing all the steel balls, the kitchen window was completely shattered. Chen Fei, while reloading his crossbow, considered his options. If the zombies didn't come out, he would use the crossbow to shoot them, though it would cost him some bolts.
Just as Chen Fei was setting up his crossbow to shoot, a zombie, attracted by Chen Fei's living presence, climbed onto the countertop and leaped out of the window, easily grabbing the railing.
A glint of joy appeared in Chen Fei's eyes. As the zombie struggled, he pulled out his M9 multi-function bayonet, stepped forward, and stabbed the zombie's head, causing it to fall. Another zombie then leaped out of the kitchen window, grabbing the railing with its hands. As it struggled, Chen Fei again used the bayonet to stab its head.
Two consecutive zombies successfully grabbed the railing, not because they had become smarter, but because of the structure. The kitchen window protruded 50 centimeters, making the distance to the fire corridor only 1.5 meters.
Realizing this, Chen Fei was not panicked but rather excited. The size of the kitchen window limited the zombies' movements, allowing only one to climb onto the countertop at a time, giving Chen Fei enough time to react. As long as he was quick enough, he could continuously deal with these zombies.
He killed five consecutive zombies, with only the sixth one being pushed down by the others. After killing the seventh zombie that leaped out, Chen Fei felt a sudden dizziness and darkness in his vision.
