The story begins with the annulment of the engagement between Arthur, the crown prince of the Kingdom of St. Aurum, and his fiancée. Lily (13 years old), who lives in a remote fortress in the west of the kingdom, is caught in the fallout of this annulment, despite never having met the prince. Her parents are transferred to an eastern fortress, and she goes to live with her mother's family, the Tinam Earls, in the capital.
