Chapter 65

While other organisms were eagerly evolving, Lin remained stationary, and among the green carpet, only a few units were used for repairing the carapace and eliminating some small invaders.
Lin’s units were almost all in a state of dormancy, and the cells themselves had not changed much. Lin could perhaps mimic other organisms to create an identical appearance, but due to the lack of diverse cell types, there would be a significant difference in reality.
However, Lin had one unit that was in a free state. Before falling into dormancy, Lin had let it swim in the water and allowed its cells to come into contact with the external environment, evolving on their own.
Lin did not impose any restrictions on it, except for one: when it could not find food, it would go to the green carpet to replenish. Otherwise, it hunted and avoided danger on its own...
It had perhaps lived for about 100 million years. When Lin awoke, it did not immediately observe it but first looked at the other organisms in the surrounding waters to have a point of comparison.
So... what had it become?
Leviathan...
Lin’s thoughts carefully examined every cell and structure, quickly locking onto a distant organism...
This former traveler, Lin’s highest unit, was something Lin was very eager to see what it had become.
Lin’s thoughts rapidly scanned Leviathan’s body. First, its original disc shape had become streamlined, with a rounded front and a pointed back, somewhat like a fish.
Indeed, this structure was more suitable for swimming in water. Although the original disc-shaped body could swim quickly by spinning, it consumed much more energy.
The thirty water jets had almost completely degenerated, but two remained at the tail. The biting tentacles were reduced to two, located on either side of the head, and the sharp-toothed mouth had disappeared, replaced by tentacles similar to those of a belemnite, covered with saw-toothed suckers.
It seemed that evolution had a common trend...
The thick, heavy armor had become lighter, grayish armor, with two rows of small tentacles on the back, seemingly for sensory purposes.
And it was... olfactory!
The moment Lin discovered these small tentacles, it understood what olfaction was. The cells on these tentacles could detect tiny impurities in the water and identify their differences and origins.
‘Olfaction’ originated from the ‘tactile’ ability to sense water vibrations, a very convenient ability. If combined with vision, touch, and olfaction, one could navigate any environment without obstruction.
Lin had finished examining Leviathan’s external structure and now turned to its internal structure.
Leviathan still maintained its original combat style, with the proliferation chamber being the largest organ, connected to six troop deployment ports on either side of its body.
In addition, it retained organs such as air sacs and a cardiovascular system, similar to before. Leviathan did not have a mouth but relied on its units to bring food back to the food sac for digestion.
Leviathan had not evolved a brain or even a ganglion, indicating that even in Lin’s dormancy, it maintained the ability to command each cell.
In addition, Leviathan had many strange structures. Besides the troop deployment ports, it had many openable and closable holes on its body, connected to muscle-lined tubes inside. These tubes were interconnected and led to a central sac-like organ filled with water.
...It seemed that the changes were not significant? And Leviathan was only three meters long, having only doubled in size after 100 million years?
The largest organisms were now ten meters long, much larger than Leviathan. After all, the original Leviathan was still considered a ‘tyrant.’
It felt a bit... disappointing?
Lin suddenly found this interesting term but could not shake off its somewhat disappointed mood.
However, when Lin observed Leviathan’s units, this mood vanished completely...
So, this was it. Leviathan had focused all its evolution on this?
Leviathan had inherited Lin’s previous idea, breaking down units after recovery and reassembling them when needed. Although there were no units in Leviathan’s body now, Lin knew from Leviathan’s life memories that it had reassembled at least a dozen new units, most of which had strange shapes that Lin had never seen before.
So, it was time to test their power.
Lin observed the surroundings. This place was far from the green carpet, and Leviathan had swum here during its life.
Below was a large coral reef. Lin quickly spotted some familiar organisms. A three-meter-long belemnite was floating above a brain-shaped coral, staring at a distant helmet fish.
You’re the one! Go!
Lin quickly reassembled a new unit inside Leviathan. It was a small spherical body with some spines on its back, a bright red abdomen with segmented limbs, and moved by jet propulsion.
Lin called this unit the ‘Carnage,’ capable of killing prey in an extremely cruel manner.
The Carnage, only thirty centimeters in size, charged directly at the belemnite’s head. The belemnite, noticing the approaching organism, ignored the helmet fish and extended its tentacles to try to grab the small organisms.
The Carnage did not evade but went straight to be grabbed by the belemnite’s tentacles, which then pushed it into the belemnite’s mouth.
The belemnite’s mouth was at the center of its tentacles, equipped with a highly hard beak. Under its pressure, even the toughest carapace would struggle. The Carnage’s abdomen was bitten, and it exploded like a grenade.
But this was just the beginning of the horror.
The explosion of the Carnage released countless small spines, which pierced the surrounding belemnite tentacles, injecting a strange liquid into the tentacle cells.
Lin did not know what destruction this liquid could cause, as Leviathan did not always insert an eyeball to observe like Lin. However, Lin knew what organisms looked like after being injected with this liquid.
After the belemnite took the first bite of the Carnage, it could not take a second. It spat out the Carnage, and its ten tentacles twisted wildly, using the saw-toothed suckers on its tentacles to tear chunks of flesh from its own body, spewing large amounts of green liquid from its mouth.
It seemed it would not live long. Leviathan’s olfactory tentacles could clearly sense the strange smell from the belemnite’s mouth, which was obviously its blood.
Perhaps the Carnage contained a powerful toxin or something that caused extreme pain to other organisms. Lin did not know how Leviathan had evolved such a strong toxin, which was even more potent than viruses.
Moreover, the Carnage itself was not consumed. Only its abdomen exploded, while the main organs were protected under the carapace on its back. The explosion did not affect its life.
Watching the belemnite slowly sink to the coral reef, Lin decided to look for some units for collecting food. However, Leviathan’s olfactory tentacles detected a strange presence approaching.
Olfaction was indeed very useful. Some organisms would sway with the water currents, making it difficult for ordinary touch to distinguish between water and organisms. But with olfaction, even the most perfect ambush would be exposed!
Leviathan suddenly accelerated to avoid the approaching organism. Lin quickly reassembled an eyeball to observe the creature that had missed its target behind Leviathan.
It was...
An unknown organism...
This organism was three meters long, with an oval head, massive jaws filled with sharp teeth, a flat, long tail for propulsion, and two pairs of thick, muscular limbs on its sides, ending in sharp blades.
These limbs seemed to be called ‘hands’ and ‘feet,’ and the organism was called...
‘Amphibian.’
