Chapter 66

6 min read1,515 words

Amphibians seem to refer to a group of organisms rather than the name of a specific organism. For this organism, Lin found more specific terms in the vocabulary.

Lava Salamander.

What is this? It sounds like a very strange name... This amphibian seems to have evolved from some lobe-finned fish, although there is no record of its evolutionary process, it does resemble those fish a lot.

The Lava Salamander is clearly a predator; it flicks its tail and opens its large jaw filled with sharp teeth to bite at the Leviathan's tail.

The Leviathan could easily dodge by accelerating, as the Lava Salamander's speed cannot catch up to the Leviathan. However, Lin does not intend to escape just like that.

The Carnivore that killed the Belemnite earlier is almost growing a new abdomen full of venomous spines. The new unit created by the Leviathan has a high reuse rate and, unlike other units, it comes with a complete set of organs.

Lin lets this Carnivore swim in front of the Lava Salamander, and indeed, the Lava Salamander is immediately attracted and bites the Carnivore in half.

This strength is too powerful... It seems it cannot be reused. However, the venomous spines inside the Carnivore have already burst out, and the Lava Salamander will not survive for long.

However, what Lin finds strange is that the Lava Salamander shows no signs of distress. It continues to devour the remains of the Carnivore, eating it completely.

Strange, is it immune to toxins?

Lin suddenly notices that the back of the Lava Salamander, after eating the Carnivore, begins to glow a bright red, like molten lava, and the color is very similar to the Carnivore's abdomen.

So it's called a 'Lava Salamander'? Does it also secrete similar toxins?

After finishing the Carnivore, the Lava Salamander turns and swims away, seemingly losing interest in the Leviathan.

Lin immediately follows, while also looking at the Leviathan's unit list to see if there is any suitable unit to deal with the Lava Salamander.

The Leviathan has many units, and Lin is unsure which one to use, so she randomly selects one. This unit is called a 'Crusher,' which seems to be used against heavily armored targets. Although the Lava Salamander is not heavily armored, it doesn't matter.

The Leviathan creates over ten Crushers. These units have an oval body, no shell, are only thirteen centimeters long, and have a flat, long tail for swimming. Their heads have a pair of appendages with hardened hammer-like tips.

This attack method seems similar to that of a carrier, but being so small, how much damage can they do?

After carefully examining their internal structure, Lin realizes these little creatures are not simple.

Lin sends the Crushers towards the Lava Salamander. At first, it ignores them, but then Lin lets one Crusher approach the Lava Salamander's back and suddenly swings its front limbs.

Smack...

Almost instantly, Lin's eyes cannot even discern the speed of the hammer. The force from the small hammer causes the Lava Salamander's skin to burst open, and a strange red liquid, along with internal blood vessels and cells, gushes out uncontrollably. It seems the Lava Salamander stores its toxins in the skin on its back.

'Skin split open'—Lin finds a fun word to describe this phenomenon.

The Lava Salamander, feeling the pain, suddenly turns its head and opens its large mouth to bite the Crusher, shattering it with its numerous sharp teeth and powerful jaws.

However, at this moment, the other Crushers also attack, striking the Lava Salamander's abdomen, tail, and head, creating multiple wounds.

The Lava Salamander writhes in an attempt to escape, no longer interested in fighting, but Lin will not let it go. The Crushers continue to pursue, striking the remaining intact parts of the Lava Salamander's body, and some directly attack the exposed muscle structures beneath the skin.

Under continuous attacks, the Lava Salamander's blood flows profusely, and the muscle structures in its limbs are destroyed. It has lost its ability to swim and twists its body as it sinks to the seabed.

The Crushers are very powerful...

The attack method of the Crushers is similar to that of a carrier, but their internal structure is different. Instead of relying solely on muscle contractions to strike, they use a complex pressure system. In simple terms, the appendages use muscles to squeeze liquid into the front section, combining the muscle power and the three-layered hard shell on the hammer to deliver a powerful blow, causing significant damage.

No wonder they are used against heavily armored targets, but they are also effective against non-armored targets.

Now, with this power, Lin easily obtains a prey, but in this era, it seems difficult to eat in peace. The blood and cells from the Lava Salamander's wounds attract some organisms to the area...

Sharks.

With their excellent sense of smell, they can detect injured organisms from over a kilometer away, and they come in groups of over a dozen. The Leviathan has to retreat, and Lin realizes that even with the Leviathan's powerful units, it would be difficult to deal with so many sharks.

This era is indeed different... In the past, when Lin hunted, no organisms would try to steal the prey, but Lin is not worried about the sharks taking the Lava Salamander.

A shark approaches the Lava Salamander's corpse, takes a bite, and immediately twists in pain, fleeing in a frenzy.

It is the Lava Salamander's toxin. It stores the toxin in its skin, and when the Crushers break its skin, the toxin is released in large quantities.

The remaining sharks, seeing this, lose interest in the Lava Salamander and swim away.

It seems they are quite intelligent. Lin thought they would each try, but now nothing can disturb her meal.

The Leviathan itself does not seem to have resistance to toxins, but the Carnivore does. Just as the Lava Salamander is not affected by the Carnivore's toxins, the Carnivore can safely consume the Lava Salamander's flesh and blood.

Lin now understands why the Carnivore has a complete set of organs. Perhaps the Carnivore is specifically designed to process what the Leviathan cannot digest, separating the nutrients and toxins and storing the toxins in the needle-like cells in its abdomen.

How did the Leviathan evolve such a miraculous organism? This is fascinating...

Lin has only seen a small part of the Leviathan's life memories and unit data. If she had seen everything at once, it would have been boring. It is more interesting to discover their abilities on her own.

Lin creates a few Carnivores and lets them eat the Lava Salamander's corpse. The Lava Salamander's internal structure is quite complex, similar to its ancestor, the flat fish, with a well-developed spine. However, Lin does not want to study it further.

It is more fun to continue testing the Leviathan's new units, and Lin should also go to land to see how the oxygen situation is.

Suddenly, Lin sees a large group of Helmet Fish not far ahead, swimming in a line in one direction.

This is the Helmet Fish's breeding activity...

From the memory of the eye, Lin knows what the Helmet Fish are doing. They will all go to a special area to perform an activity called 'spawning.'

This is also the reason why, despite their cumbersome head plates, they can still thrive in a sea full of predators.

Lin knows where they are going and follows them.

The vast group of Helmet Fish swims towards the land, and a large crack appears in front of them. They all swim towards the center of the land, where a huge fissure appears.

The fissure is a narrow waterway leading deep into the land, which can be called a 'river.'

In the changing environment, not only the seabed but also the land can crack, allowing seawater to flow into the land's fissures.

However, Lin thinks that the water in this fissure called a 'river' does not come from the sea but from within the land, as the water... is somewhat peculiar.

The Helmet Fish surge into the river. At the river's entrance, dozens of sharks are lying in wait, seemingly anticipating the arrival of the Helmet Fish. This is indeed a rare feast.

The Helmet Fish ignore the sharks and continue to swim into the river. Even as their companions are torn apart by the sharks, they continue to advance. The sharks do not dare to pursue the Helmet Fish that successfully enter the river.

The river lacks a substance called 'salinity,' so if marine organisms enter the river, some strange things can happen, such as organ rupture, etc.

Lin has never entered a river, but this knowledge is included in the vocabulary.

The Helmet Fish seem to be able to switch their circulatory systems, allowing them to live in both rivers and the sea. But does the Leviathan have this ability?

Should I go in and try?
