What a pity...
Watching the jellyfish that had burst into fragments fall back into the water, Lin lost another opportunity to study the floating mechanism. It was now impossible for her to collect the fragments and return them to the hot water.
Why do they commit suicide just by being pierced? Lin didn't understand these jellyfish and didn't know if they had brains. Now, the other jellyfish around her had caught enough trilobites and were drifting away from this place. She didn't know when she would encounter them again.
Forget it, let's keep moving.
Now, some new arthropods were crawling out of the sea, but they were getting fewer and fewer. This also indicated that the sea was getting hotter, and they were dying underwater before they could crawl out.
However, the air didn't feel hot at all, and Lin didn't know why.
Until the end of the day, Leviathan finally climbed to the top of the cliff and officially entered the land of the North.
The land above the cliff was a broad and flat rocky area. Further back were the places with those huge spires. Lin could now see the spires with their forked tips clearly. They were very dense, with the shorter ones being over ten meters tall and the tallest reaching over a hundred meters. They were all covered in green.
Could they be living things?
This thought flashed through her mind, but compared to the spires, Lin was more concerned about the current situation of this open rocky area.
The rocky ground was covered with undried water stains, and there were fish carcasses everywhere, mostly armored fish. They were clearly washed up by the tsunami. Lin's thirty-one surviving transporters were also scattered across this rocky area.
There was a special smell here, produced by the carcasses. Regardless of the species, they usually harbored a large number of wild cells. These cells normally only ate the waste produced by the host, but once the host died, they began to decompose the host's cells, which had lost their ability to resist. This process produced a peculiar smell.
It seemed to be called 'decay.'
Decay produced a strong smell. The Brontoscorpio that had climbed up earlier were attracted by the scent of the fish carcasses and were feasting on the abundant food. Therefore, Lin's transporters were currently not in danger, and Leviathan was currently unable to move. It needed to undergo some modifications.
Leviathan had to be modified to adapt to the land, and some internal structures had to be changed. The way of bearing weight was different from when it was climbing walls, so the arthropod legs needed to be thickened and the ends enlarged to support Leviathan's weight.
After the modifications were completed, Leviathan began to move on land, needing to find the transporters and equip them with attachments for land movement.
Soon, Leviathan approached the position of the first transporter, which presented a bit of a problem.
A ten-meter-long Dunkleosteus carcass lay in front of Lin, surrounded by a group of Brontoscorpio, which were tearing at its flesh and skin with their pincers. The transporter was right at the tail of the Dunkleosteus carcass.
It seemed that the smell of the Dunkleosteus was so strong that the scorpions didn't pay attention to the transporter.
But when Leviathan approached, the scorpions turned around, raised their pincers, and shook their bodies, assuming a fighting stance. They weren't trying to attack, just to drive Leviathan away.
Lin ignored them, and Leviathan walked to the tail of the fish, starting to produce some 'attachments' inside its body, which were actually arthropod legs. Since the transporters were filled with nutrients, their shells couldn't be opened casually, or the contents would spill out. So Leviathan had to help them produce these attachments.
These 'attachments' had their own small circulatory systems and could move without being connected to the body. Leviathan coated the roots of the six newly created arthropod legs with a highly adhesive chitinous substance and then attached them to both sides of the transporter's body. After the chitinous substance hardened, Leviathan equipped the transporter with eyes, completing the process.
Using this method of attaching legs, Lin could even make non-living things like rocks move, but the attachments themselves didn't last long because their internal structures were mostly muscles, and they didn't store much energy.
Leviathan carried the legged transporter away, and the scorpions that had been threatening Lin immediately turned back to continue feasting on the Dunkleosteus carcass, showing no interest in Leviathan or the transporter.
Leviathan and the transporter moved through the pile of carcasses, looking for the other transporters. There were a lot of fish here, and although many Brontoscorpio and some trilobites had come up, the number of fish was so large that they could eat for ten days and nights and still not finish.
Lin found that some lobe-finned fish were still alive, struggling on the rocky ground. Once their gills lacked water, they would quickly suffocate and die. Although Brontoscorpio also used gills, they seemed to have some special structures that made them not fear the lack of water in their gills.
Lin had never killed a Brontoscorpio to study it, although she didn't think it was necessary.
However, although the area was covered with water stains due to the tsunami, the water would eventually be blown away by the air. At that time, it was unknown whether the seawater would return to its normal temperature.
If the seawater remained abnormal, they would have to live on land...
Lin quickly found the second transporter, which was among a pile of armored fish carcasses. This pile was occupied by a small type of trilobite, which, although small, was very numerous.
Lin ignored them and retrieved the transporter.
The subsequent search process was uneventful. Lin gathered all the transporters and concentrated them on a spacious, corpse-free rocky area. What should she do next?
I wonder how the disaster is progressing?
Although there wouldn't be any earthquakes here for at least a few years, Lin was still worried about the fireballs, which were unpredictable and could come from anywhere...
The things in the air are unpredictable... If only she could catch those flying jellyfish.
But they were too good at escaping, and even when caught, they would commit suicide, which was very troublesome.
If she returned to the sea, she might encounter many problems, and of course, living on land would bring some new challenges, not just resisting ultraviolet rays.
Let's wait and see if the seawater will return to normal...
Lin had many transporters that had been thrown deep into the land, probably in those spire forests. Although they were all dead, she would still have to search for them if there was a chance.
As night fell, Lin created some lanterns and placed them around the cluster to observe the surroundings and prevent threats.
The night wind brought a long-awaited chill, making Lin feel very comfortable. In the distant sky, she saw countless lights streaking across the sky. Were those fireballs?
At this moment, Lin learned a new word: 'meteor.' The meteors didn't fly toward her.
If those things hit the land, it would be very dangerous... Thinking about this, Lin began to create some small units called testers, whose role was to jump off the cliff and test the temperature of the water.
The information from the testers indicated that the water was still very hot, although the temperature hadn't continued to rise, it was still difficult to live in...
Why isn't the air hot? The temperature of the water should affect the air.
Although she didn't know the reason, Lin thought it was for the best. If the air was also hot, no living things could survive.
Lin watched the meteor shower in the distance and silently waited for the night to pass...
The smell of decay permeated this vast area, signaling the presence of food. However, Lin was well-nourished and didn't need to compete with the scorpions for the carcasses at night.
Some creatures were repelled by the smell of decay because their cells couldn't fight off the decomposing bacteria or resist the toxins produced by them. When they smelled the carcasses, their cells produced a substance that made the brain feel a sensation called 'nausea' to prevent them from approaching or eating the carcasses.
This was a rather strange feeling. Their brains couldn't determine on their own whether something was edible and needed the cells to produce a substance to make the brain feel nauseous to avoid approaching...
Why make it so complicated? If they already knew it was inedible, they could just avoid it. Why waste energy on a nausea reaction? Some creatures even vomited undigested food due to a strong nausea reaction.
Is it necessary to be so wasteful?
After observing for a hundred million years, Lin came to a conclusion... In a typical organism, the brain, which is part of 'consciousness,' doesn't know what the other cells in the body are thinking. Similarly, the cells don't know what the consciousness is thinking. Therefore, the cells produce some liquid substances or transfer some energy to produce various reactions to inform or control the 'consciousness.' This sometimes leads to some rather stupid actions, such as wasting a lot of food by avoiding a carcass.
It's really troublesome, a common problem for organisms with brains.
Lin occasionally had the idea of 'creating a brain to see,' but she immediately dismissed it when she thought about it.
While Lin was engaged in these somewhat boring thoughts, the night was almost over, and the meteor shower was no longer visible.
But when the light of day arrived, Lin found that her field of vision was lower than it had been at night...
