"Th-this..."
Zhao Heng wanted to walk over and say something, but seeing the girl's furrowed brows and the half-eaten meal, he gave up the idea. There was no point in talking now. He turned to the waiter and ordered another set meal, then went over to wait for his food. The girl glanced at him with a slight wariness but said nothing.
It was just an unconscious display of self-defense.
The restaurant was playing an old song, which seemed to reflect Zhao Heng's helplessness:
"Love you, hate you;"
"Ask if you know, like the great river, once unleashed, it never stops;"
"Turning a thousand bends, a thousand shoals, yet the struggle within never subsides."
The hot meal was quickly served, and Zhao Heng didn't pay her any attention, just buried his head and started eating. Although his eating wasn't too ugly, it certainly wasn't elegant. The refined girl squinted at him, clearly uncomfortable with Zhao Heng's roughness. She picked up the soup, intending to take a few sips and leave.
But just as she sipped, she realized it wasn't the seaweed soup she had ordered. She waved over the waiter, and in Zhao Heng's slight surprise, the refined girl politely said, "Waiter, I remember I ordered seaweed soup, not lean meat soup. Could you please change it for me? Thank you."
"Miss, your meal is over there."
The waiter glanced at Zhao Heng and the girl, then quickly looked around and pointed to a set meal at the next table, explaining gently, "You might have sat at the wrong table after you came back from making the call. I thought you knew this gentleman and had moved your meal over, but..."
The waiter laughed a couple of times and then retreated.
The refined girl turned her head and instantly fell silent, then a hard-to-hide embarrassment appeared on her face. Looking at the nearly empty plate and the lean meat soup in her hand, she quickly put down the spoon and said to Zhao Heng, somewhat embarrassed, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I was distracted."
Zhao Heng smiled slightly and said softly, "It's okay!"
Although the refined girl was beautiful and even a bit proud, her good upbringing made her apologize again, "I'm really sorry. I ate your meal and made you order another one. I... I'll pay you for the meal. If you like, I can give you that set meal; I haven't touched it yet..."
"No need."
Zhao Heng finished the last bite of his meal, then took a napkin to wipe his mouth. He saw the girl's deep embarrassment as she fumbled for her wallet but found no change. He smiled lightly and said, "It was an unintentional mistake! Don't worry too much about it. It's just a meal. Consider it a treat from a friend."
"Next time we meet, you can treat me."
The refined girl held a thousand-yuan note, thinking for a moment. Handing over the note would seem like charity, far less acceptable than accepting Zhao Heng's words. She glanced at Zhao Heng's clear eyes, seeing no ulterior motives, and put her wallet away. She then extended her smooth hand and introduced herself gracefully:
"Du Ziyang!"
"Zhao Heng!"
Their hands lightly touched and then separated, with smiles that were neither too light nor too heavy. Zhao Heng then saw Du Ziyang staring at her bag in surprise. Before he could be surprised, Du Ziyang spoke, "You're also a freshman at Huahai University?" She pointed at her bag, adding, "Your admission letter is peeking out."
Zhao Heng looked down and indeed saw the Huahai University admission letter sticking out from the zipper. It must have come loose when he beat up the two pickpockets. He put it back and nodded, "Yes! A freshman at Huahai University's School of Economics. You are too?"
Du Ziyang smiled sweetly, completely relaxing her guard, "What a coincidence? I'm also a freshman at the School of Economics." Then she sighed, patting her hands and shrugging, "Unfortunately, my admission letter was stolen by a pickpocket on the train. My wallet survived because I kept it close to my body."
"It looks like I'll have to go through the hassle of reporting to the university again."
Zhao Heng was slightly taken aback, "Stolen?"
Du Ziyang nodded gently, her face filled with melancholy, "It's my first time on a train, so I had no experience. When I got on, I was only looking down to find my carriage and seat, not paying attention to my surroundings. So, everything in my handbag, including the admission letter, was stolen."
"My wallet survived because I forgot to put it back in the bag."
Zhao Heng looked at Du Ziyang's melancholic smile, slightly stunned. He finally understood why she was so distracted and why she had taken the wrong meal. Seeing her extremely depressed expression, he knew how troublesome it was to be without documents in this country. He suddenly remembered something, "Don't worry, I'll help you find it."
"You? Help me find it?"
Du Ziyang was surprised, then smiled faintly, "Thank you."
She thought Zhao Heng was just trying to comfort her. After all, finding something from a pickpocket was like looking for a needle in a haystack, and she didn't know who had stolen it. How could it be found? But she was grateful for Zhao Heng's righteousness, feeling that she hadn't made a wrong friend. Zhao Heng, however, was thinking about the two pickpockets.
Every snake has its path!
Zhao Heng believed that if he found the two pickpockets who had just robbed him, he might find the admission letter. Before he could finish his thought, a noisy sound of footsteps came from outside. The diners started to leave, and the waiter's face tightened as he retreated to the kitchen, holding the phone and considering whether to call the police, but was stopped by the manager.
The manager recognized these people and knew their background. Not only had the railway police been bought off, but even if the police wanted to intervene, they were powerless. These pickpockets were seasoned, feeling more at ease in detention than at home.
"Brother Feihu, it's this guy."
Zhao Heng looked up at the noisy entrance and saw seven or eight men with rolled-up sleeves approaching menacingly. Two men with swollen faces like pig heads, limping and wincing with every step, but with eyes full of determination and hatred, pointed at him:
"It's this guy."
One of them, missing a front tooth, spoke with a slight lisp, but it didn't affect their hateful accusation. Zhao Heng smiled coldly, recognizing them as the two pickpockets he had beaten in the restroom. Then, a tall, muscular man walked up from behind, bald, with two flying dragons tattooed on his arms. He had a cigar in his mouth, glanced at Zhao Heng, and sneered:
"Little brother, you have some guts to touch my people."
He glanced at Zhao Heng, who remained calm, and pointed the cigar at his head, "You not only beat them up, but you also stripped them and took their money. That's not good." He shook his head, his eyes suddenly filled with coldness, "That makes me very angry, and the consequences will be severe."
"They tried to rob me."
Zhao Heng replied calmly, "So, I took their money."
"Ha, you're quite honest."
A ripple of emotion crossed Brother Feihu's face, though it was fleeting, it was real. He noticed that Zhao Heng not only remained unperturbed but also looked at him with a disdainful and challenging gaze. He had some skills? Brother Feihu couldn't help but snort, "But, why?"
The men around him also rolled up their sleeves, adopting a threatening stance.
A hint of ridicule crossed Zhao Heng's face as he moved his bag behind him and stepped forward, facing the eight pickpockets alone, "Why? Do you know what I hate most? Those three words! Just for that, I can beat you to a pulp, and I also want something from you!"
He pointed at Du Ziyang, "Whoever stole her things, hand them over."
Du Ziyang wanted to hold Zhao Heng back, but he was already standing in the middle. She didn't know what was happening, but she could see that Brother Feihu and his gang were very tough, and his subordinates were all angry, ready to pounce on Zhao Heng. This made her slightly worried, "Zhao Heng, I don't need the admission letter..."
She didn't want to drag Zhao Heng into this mess because of her.
Zhao Heng waved his hand, "It's fine! These pickpockets are nothing to me."
"Kid, you're asking for it!"
One of Brother Feihu's men rushed forward, throwing a powerful punch at Zhao Heng without a word. But before he could get close, Zhao Heng kicked him hard in the waist, sending him flying and crashing into the restaurant wall with a clear sound of bones breaking.
