Chapter 6

8 min read1,894 words

A simple yet warm breakfast.

As Soren was about to go out, Vivian immediately stood up silently, using her small hands to tidy up his sleeves, then stood on the stool and tiptoed to straighten his collar. There were no many words, as they had long understood each other. Soren gently patted her little head and then walked out of the low house.

"Bro... Brother!..."

After Soren's figure left, Vivian gently shrank her body and tightly locked the door.

In the past, when her brother had to go out for something, she was not at all afraid because she still had Hiss, an old dog that would protect her even if bad people broke in. Burglaries had happened many times in the slums, but now Hiss had left forever, and the room was left with only her, a lonely little girl, who couldn't help but feel a bit scared.

After all,

She was just an eight-year-old little girl.

All along, she had no sense of security, afraid of the dark, afraid of loneliness, and afraid of being alone.

But she couldn't tell Soren.

Because Soren also had important things to do; he needed to bring back money, and there was not much food left at home.

She didn't want to be a burden to her brother.

Even though she could do very little now, the little girl still felt that she shouldn't make Soren worry.

"Vivian."

The little girl held the broom tightly in her hand and said softly, "You have to learn to be stronger!"

"You have to learn to take care of yourself."

"Brother has already woken up, no one will dare to come and disturb us."

"They all fear Brother!"

Dock area.

This is the most densely populated place in Amber City, and the entire city's economy is supported by the Onyx River.

Most of the men in the slums work as laborers here. The endless ships on the Onyx River transport goods from all over, and a large amount of labor is needed to move them. This is also the place with the most intense gang conflicts, with over a dozen gangs of various sizes making a living here, whether by stealing, skimming goods, or extorting protection money, they can always find ways to make money.

"Is that Soren?!"

A tall, thin man glanced at Soren walking from a distance, immediately whispered to the person beside him, and then walked over, saying, "Soren."

"The boss wants to see you!"

Soren looked up at the man in front of him, and after a moment's thought, he remembered who he was, a guy named Garys.

He was a skilled warrior.

He had once followed someone as an adventurer, but unexpectedly, not long after leaving Amber City, he encountered a group of goblins and hyenas. Hyenas are very dangerous creatures, they move in groups and often sneak attack adventurers at night. The entire adventurer team was almost wiped out, and he barely escaped, but his arm was left with a serious injury. Later, he joined a local gang and gave up the idea of becoming a powerful adventurer to win astonishing wealth and fame.

If calculated by the profession template, he should be a 10th-level commoner/3rd-level warrior.

Weaker than the guards of Onyx City!

"The boss?"

Soren looked at him and shook his head, "The boss is dead."

"Killed by that wizard."

A task that should not have been taken, not only killed Soren but also most of the core members of the gang.

Is a wizard so easy to provoke?

In this world, wizards who can act independently are all at least 1st level, and in terms of profession templates, they are at least 10th-level scholars/5th-level wizards.

Not to mention a mere gang, even a regular army might not be able to defeat him.

Soren knew all too well the terrifying power of 1st-level and above wizards. If it weren't for their inherent fragility, they would be the most powerful profession.

The world's period of intense turmoil is about to begin, and even high-level professionals, let alone legendary figures, might be eliminated like chickens and dogs.

He had no interest in wasting time on a local gang that was not significant.

"Soren."

Garys looked at him silently and slowly said, "Kohl has become the new boss."

"Whether to go and see him is up to you."

"Kohl is not an easy person to talk to."

Soren was an excellent thief, and no gang would easily give up such a source of wealth.

It was fine when he was unconscious, as no one would care about a nearly dead guy, but now that he had woken up, they naturally wanted to try to pull him in.

Soren heard the subtle threat and his eyes narrowed slightly, revealing a hint of killing intent!

He was a thief.

Thieves are also assassins in the shadows, more dangerous than anyone else.

"I will decide for myself."

Soren ignored Garys and walked toward the dock area.

He had important things to do!

The former Soren, out of consideration for Vivian, appeared somewhat weak in the gang, and a large part of the stolen goods was always taken away, leaving only enough for the two of them to survive. The main reason was that the original Soren had not received formal combat training, and even with an agility value over 18, his combat ability was far inferior to a formally trained warrior. But the current Soren was different; the man in front of him would not last more than three moves against him!

...

This unremarkable warehouse contained many goods, a common sight in the dock area.

A shadow approached silently.

Soren carefully avoided the guards outside, who were merely strong ordinary people. After entering, he quickly found a box.

It was a locked box, containing more valuable goods.

He took out a hooked wire from his pocket, the most basic lock-picking tool he had.

Soren carefully inserted it and skillfully turned his fingers.

Ding!

Click!

After a while, the lock on the box was quickly picked.

A row of data appeared:

"Lock picking successful!"

"Your thief skills have improved, gaining 15 profession experience points."

When Soren saw the data in front of him, he immediately breathed a slight sigh of relief.

It seemed that the method of gaining profession experience was still in place.

Thieves are not a powerful combat profession in the early stages, lacking the robust physique of warriors and unable to master special abilities like paladins. For thieves, adventuring and killing in the wild are very dangerous, whether it's low-level dogmen or goblins, they often appear in groups, many of which have keen senses and can easily detect low-level thieves in stealth. Therefore, in the early stages, the only way for thieves to improve their strength is by picking locks and disarming traps.

This is the most stable method!

Before reaching level 5 in profession, thieves can gain experience by picking locks, and before reaching level 10, disarming traps can still provide significant profession experience.

As for later, only special magical locks and advanced traps will be useful!

Ordinary locks and traps can no longer improve thief skills.

Creak!

Soren gently opened the box, which contained some tea bricks. He did not touch the goods but continued to search for boxes.

Picking the same lock twice does not grant profession experience; to gain experience, one must meet the conditions to improve thief skills. There are many such locked boxes in the dock area, enough to raise his thief level a bit.

After picking two or three boxes,

Soren's steps suddenly stopped in front of a door. He carefully examined the ground and then took a deep breath.

Snap!

He lightly leaped onto an oak barrel, then extended his fingers to pinch a barely noticeable thread, lifting it and securing it around a nail. He then cut the other end with a dagger and quickly dismantled an alarm device. This was a simple trap; if the thread was accidentally broken, the other end of the trap would trigger an alarm.

Many thieves have suffered from this, being caught and severely injured!

The world of "The War of the Gods" is cruel.

Those severely injured thieves received no treatment and could not afford the expensive medical costs, ultimately becoming permanently disabled and forced to restart.

Rising from a low-level professional to the legendary realm is extremely difficult!

Many people have fallen repeatedly.

This not only requires strength, but luck is also a crucial part!

Soren quietly waited, carefully observing the ground to find any possible traps.

In such a warehouse,

If an alarm trap is set, there cannot be just one; there must be another trap.

There might be something valuable inside.

Indeed!

Soren soon noticed something unusual under the wooden board. He carefully used his dagger to pry it up, steadying it with his fingers, not daring to tremble at all.

There was a more dangerous trap below!

If triggered, knives would shoot out from both sides, likely causing immediate death!

Click.

Soren used his dagger to hold the trigger, then twisted it to the side, and with a whoosh, two knives shot out from above his head, embedding themselves in the wall.

A row of data appeared:

"Trap disarmed successfully."

"Your thief skills have improved, gaining 50 profession experience points."

"Trap disarmed successfully."

"Your thief skills have improved, gaining 120 profession experience points."

Phew.

Soren breathed a sigh of relief, slightly relaxing, and muttered, "Indeed, disarming traps provides more experience!"

"But this thing is also very dangerous."

After disarming two traps and adding the profession experience from the initial lock-picking, Soren finally accumulated 200 experience points and chose to level up his thief profession without hesitation.

"Thief profession level up to 2."

"Gained 23 (agility 19 + (intelligence 18 - 10) * 0.5) skill points, health increased by 9 points (6 points from profession + (constitution 15 - 10) * 0.5)."

"Gained 1 free attribute point."

Compared to the skill points gained at each profession level, it is much harder to gain free attribute points.

One must level up two profession levels to gain 1 free attribute point.

In other words, the next free attribute point will only be gained when Soren levels up his thief profession to 4.

This free attribute point is extremely valuable!

Soren glanced at his attribute template and without hesitation allocated the free attribute point to his agility. 20 points is a threshold; below 20, one is still within the range of ordinary people, but above 20, one enters the realm of extraordinary humans.

Footsteps sounded outside the warehouse.

Soren nimbly leaped up, grabbing the roof beam with his arm, and then quietly slipped out.

Just a slight increase in agility.

Was enough to allow him to perform many high-difficulty actions that he could not do before, whether in reflexes or agility, he had already surpassed the range of ordinary people.

A man soon entered.

He glanced at the warehouse, his face changed, and he shouted loudly. Soon, a group of armed guards rushed in from outside.

It seems this warehouse cannot be visited again.

Since they have discovered that a thief has been here, they will definitely strengthen the security!
