Small things to note first:

– There’s a sequel called Perfect Partner (functional title) that focuses on Pei Xi and his romance with the female lead Xia Lekui. Though as I mentioned in a comment a while ago, I don’t see myself translating this one.

– Drama-watchers will know that Lu Yiyi x Lin Yixuan and Sun Zeyi x Shu Wen get together as well (is what I heard, lol).

– I’ll be putting any footnotes/translator comments right below the story they pertain to, just to make it easier to see which one they correspond to.

Alright now, on to the classic “second generation” extras!

Extra 3: Daughter’s Slave (Part 1)

[1]

“Ji Shenlin, I’m warning you! If it weren’t for the sake of your dad, I would’ve already—”

With a pair of peach-blossom eyes, the little girl who was pretty as a doll turned up her chin without a care in the world. “You would’ve already what?”

“Give me some more respect.” Lin Yiyi shrunk his head backwards, sorting out his shirt that the girl had wrinkled just now while grabbing the toy. “Use, use your words, not your hands and feet!”

“You’re the one who didn’t listen when I used my words.” Ji Shenlin lazily stretched her words long, bending forward to get close to the boy’s face. “So are you giving this toy to me or not?”

“Don’t come over here!” Their distance was too close and Lin Yixuan was unable to keep himself from stepping backwards, tongue nearly starting to knot up. “H-here.”

With that said, he shoved the toy into the girl’s arms, turned, and ran off.

He hadn’t yet run a few steps when he saw his own mom and dad’s figures in the dining hall. Lin Yiyi’s nose turned sour. Before he could complain, he heard a familiar scream.

As it turned out, it was Lu Yiyi pulling on Lin Yixuan’s ear, “using her hands and feet” of love.

When he saw Lin Yiyi, Lin Yixuan seemed to have found a saving grace, shouting at the top of his lungs: “Son! Son, save me!”

Lin Yiyi backtracked on the same path and returned to the living room.

Ji Xiangkong and Pei Xi were sitting on the sofa, playing a game on the console, one remote for each person, seemingly in battle.

Qiu Ying was peeling tangerines as she watched the battle, bringing the peeled tangerine meat to Ji Xiangkong’s mouth. As soon as her fingers neared, he would subconsciously turn his head. It was extremely tacitly harmonious.

Xia Lekui was trying the same, but unfortunately, whether it was because Pei Xi was too lost in focus or not, he bit her fingers several times.

Today was the sixth birthday of Ji Shenlin, Ji Xiangkong’s daughter, and the living room was filled with children.

Sitting on the far right of the sofa were Pei Xi’s twin son and daughter, the two of them with nearly the exact same face but with temperaments as different as north and south.

Older brother Pei Qianchuan was expressionless, indifferent throughout everything.

Younger sister Pei Le was grinning, clapping in delight throughout everything.

Ji Shenlin went over to Pei Xi’s side, expression turning cute in a flash. She poked at Pei Qianchuan’s arm, giving him the war trophy that she’d just gotten from Lin Yiyi. Her voice was soft and sticky: “A’yi just gave me a toy, do you want to play?”

Pei Qianchuan glanced lightly at it. “I don’t play with stupid people’s toys.”

Lin Yiyi: “Who are you calling stupid!”

Pei Qianchuan ignored him, looking straight at the TV screen.

Suffering two successive blows, Lin Yiyi’s heart collapsed. He nearly sat down on the floor and cried.

Pei Le stood up to trot over to his side. “A’yi, don’t be sad, I’ll play with you.”

Lin Yiyi blinked. Such an angelic little girl, and yet she had the exact same face as that stinking iceberg.

As he thought of this, he was even sadder.

[2]

Everyone knew that ever since Ji Shenlin was born, Ji Xiangkong became a slave to his daughter.

While on break, Qiu Ying streamed at home and interviewed Ji Xiangkong on a whim.

The two of them seriously went through several rounds of “you ask I answer”, when suddenly Ji Shenlin jumped up from the side to throw herself onto his back with a thump. She yelled, “Raid!”

In front of the audience, Ji Xiangkong bent forward and made an agreeable: “Aiyo—”

The chat was filled with “hahahaha” “Captain Ji’s received ten thousand critical hits” “Take care of yourself, father-in-law!”

When they were playing Werewolf at a friends’ get-together, Ji Xiangkong was narrating a summary as the Sheriff and leading everyone in voting. Just as he was halfway through his analysis of the round, Ji Shenlin climbed onto him with ease, reached our her little hands, and covered his mouth to prevent him from speaking.

Ji Xiangkong helplessly shrugged his shoulders, only able to gesture with his hands at everyone.

The sight in front of their eyes was so funny that everyone couldn’t hold back their laughter.

Only after Ji Shenlin removed her noble paws did Ji Xiangkong finally seem to have permission to speak again.

He raised his eyebrows questioningly at her. The girl batted her large eyes, answer straightforward. “I’m bored, tell me a story.”

Ji Xiangkong brought Ji Shenlin into his arms, gently helping her braid her hair, and leaned over to ask her with a low laugh, “Little girl, how are you this overbearing?”

“How else could it be if not because you always spoil her?” Lin Yixuan, next to him, clicked his tongue and expressed, “If it was our A’yi, that kid would’ve immediately turned as quiet as a chicken with a single one of my glances.”

“Seriously?” Xia Ling side-eyed him. “From what I can see, every time you get punished by Yiyi jie and you glance at him for help, he immediately slips away faster than anyone.”

Ji Shenlin inherited her parents’ heartthrob characteristics in full. At kindergarten, the boys and girls would fight like cats and dogs for the entire day over who would sit next to her.

Finally, Princess Ji made a decision. The position on her left was for Pei Qianchuan, the position on her right was for Lin Yiyi.

Adding on Pei Qianchuan’s younger twin sister Pei Li, the four little friends practically grew up together.

There were times when their parents went out on a date, enjoying a world of two, and they would be placed in foster care at Sun Zeyi’s house.

Sun Zeyi could cure all sorts of difficult diseases of all sorts of bear cubs. If they couldn’t be cured, then using Shu Wen, the tiger babies would become kitties within seconds.

Sun Zeyi was steaming little piggy buns, feeding Ji Shenlin as he teased her.

“Tell me in secret, what kind of boy does our Shenlin like?”

Ji Shenlin raised her chin, head held high and chest stuck out. “Like my dad!”

Sun Zeyi made a contemplative face, drawing out his words. “But Pei Qianchuan and A’yi are both different, what should you do?”

When she heard this, the little loli’s mouth flattened, delicate eyebrows twisting together as she slipped into distress.

She lifted her eyes to look at somewhere not far away.

Lin Yiyi was holding a toy lightsaber, dancing around in a little circle as he fought with another kid. Bursting with energy, he cried out: “Watch out! Hey! Hah!”

Pei Qianchuan was quietly building up a difficult Lego set. Whenever he couldn’t do it, he would flip through the instruction book himself.

Ji Shenlin jumped off the chair and trotted all the way over to Pei Qianchuan’s side. She reached out to poke at his shoulder.

“Xiao Peipei.”

Pei Qianchuan didn’t make a sound.

“I’m going to marry a boy like my dad in the future.” Ji Shenlin hesitated, aimed a glance at him, and her voice became lighter. “But I want to marry you too.”

The plastic building blocks in Pei Qianchuan immediately fell to the ground. Turning to look at her, the iceberg’s face finally showed a hint of fluctuation.

In the next moment, Ji Shenlin grabbed his arm and shook him, hard.

“So there’s only way, you’ve got to work hard to become like my dad as soon as possible! I’ll help you! In a bit, I’ll give you my dad’s poster and you can go back and stick it on your wall!”

Pei Qianchuan: ??? (BGM: Don’t you have a lot of question marks, little friend)

Evening, Pei Qianchuan’s room.

Pei Xi: Are you starting to chase stars? (OS: I heard Qiu Ying tell Xia Lekui this before, this term should be called ‘chasing stars’, that’s right)

Pei Qianchuan: No.

Pei Xi: Then this is…

Pei Qianchuan: Don’t know.

Pei Xi: ……

Pei Qianchuan: Dad, people are so hard to understand.

Pei Xi: I’ve always thought so.

The two people lifted their heads at the same time to look at the poster of Ji Xiangkong on the wall.

t/n: That Pei Xi didn’t even question the fact that it was there…. I imagine that right next to Pei Xi and Xia Lekui’s wedding photo is a poster of Ji Xiangkong. (I kid… I’m kidding!)

[3]

When Ji Shenlin was five years old, there was a day Qiu Ying enfolded her on her lap to watch TV. It was a tangled love story of “guess the husband”; the female lead was wavering between two excellent men. Qiu Ying said to Xia Lekui, “I suspect that childhood friends aren’t able to beat newcomers.”1

The little loli blinked her eyes in confusion. “What’s childhood friends?”

Qiu Ying smiled as she poked at her baby fat. “You and Pei Qianchuan are childhood friends. But in a few years when you get into elementary school and Pei Qianchuan meets new female classmates, and has a good relationship with her, she’s a ‘newcomer’.”

So Ji Shenlin immediately went to find Pei Qianchuan. “Xiao Peipei, do you like childhood lovers or newcomers?” Pei Qianchuan was putting together Legos and indifferently glanced at her. “Newcomers.”

He couldn’t understand what she was saying to begin with, so he chose the words that would let him speak the fewest.

When she heard what he said, Ji Shenlin immediately erupted into tears.

Pei Qianchuan’s expression froze and he stopped moving, aware that he had probably, inexplicably, stepped on a landmine. He didn’t look for tissues, but he used the cuff of his sleeve to clumsily wipe at the little girl’s tears.

Pei Qianchuan looked down and said softly, “I was wrong.”

Ji Shenlin sniffed and looked at him with large eyes filled with expectation. She repeated her question: “Then, then what do you like better, childhood sweethearts or newcomers?”

Pei Qianchuan considered it and then replied, “Neither.”

1 This is a character archetype that really doesn’t have an English name (even though I searched for so long on TVTropes LOL). It’s called 天降, which literally means “dropping in from the sky”, in this case referring to how childhood friends always seem to be beaten by a suddenly-appearing love interest (the childhood friend never wins, right?). Interestingly enough, this term was once used to refer to Ji Xiangkong’s entry into VPG, which I believe I translated as “interloper” back then. This time I did my best to find a word that could fit the (romantic) nuance a little better, since it’s not like being one is inherently a good or bad thing, honestly.

[4]

Ji Xiangkong never allowed Ji Shenlin to go to his club and play around, but not even ironclad rules could chain down a 7-year-old girl’s rebellious heart.

Like a little cat, she lay down on the sofa next to where Pei Qianchuan was sitting, two paws laying on the armrest and clear, large eyes blinking at him.

Unfortunately, Pei Qianchuan turned a deaf ear to the whole bunch of things that she said to incite him into going to the club and go wild. He was focused on reading the Math Olympiad book in his hands.

Ji Shenlin lowered her long eyelashes and reached out two fingers to lightly tug at his sleeve. “Xiao Peipei, you should go out with me. I’m so pretty that I won’t be safe if I go alone.”

“Alright.” Pei Qianchuan closed his book and stood up to head toward the foyer. “I think that your words make sense.”

Ji Shenlin’s mouth had been running full tilt like a train. After he agreed, she herself grew dazed. The little girl went up to his side and tipped her head to the side in confusion. “Which words made sense?”

Pei Qianchuan finished tying his shoelaces, looked up at her, and said evenly, “You’re pretty.”

[5]

After Ji Xiangkong finished up his work and went into the living room, he brought Ji Shenlin into his arms and sat her down on his thigh. He lightly asked next to her ear: “How does going to the aquarium with Dad tomorrow sound?”

The little loli clapped her hands in joy. “Alright!” She hesitated, glanced at him, then guiltily lowered her eyelashes and haltingly said, “But I made a date to go and draw with Pei Qianchuan…”

Ji Xiangkong skillfully braided her long hair. “That’s alright, you can say that you’ll break a date with a boy and then break it, they need these types of setbacks to grow.”

Qiu Ying laughed as she pushed down his head. “What kind of nonsense are you telling our child again?”

“But I still want to go draw with Xiao Peipei. How about we go to the aquarium next weekend?” said Ji Shenlin as she carefully watched Ji Xiangkong’s expression. Seeing that he had no reaction, she took his face in her little hands and pecked him on the left cheek, softly and stickily saying, “Dad, don’t be sad.”

Ji Xiangkong was stunned, lips moving, with no way to refute.

After Ji Shenlin left, Ji Xiangkong quietly sat on the sofa, just like a statue.

Qiu Ying passed the orange she’d just peeled over to his mouth. Ji Xiangkong quietly asked, “Did you hear something fall down?”

Qiu Ying glanced around. “What was it?”

Ji Xiangkong slowly turned toward her: “My heart.”

“The two of us can go to the aquarium tomorrow.” Qiu Ying leaned close, kissing him on the right cheek. “Xiangkong gege, don’t be sad.”

[6]

On the weekend, Ji Shenlin trapped Pei Qianchuan into helping her with her homework, and the two of them studied for an afternoon in her room. When Ji Xiangkong returned home, he happened to hear Qiu Ying say to Pei Qianchuan, “Xiao Chuan, stay for dinner tonight.”

Pei Qianchuan was about to speak when he was suddenly interrupted.

Ji Xiangkong patted Pei Qianchuan friendlily on the shoulder with a brilliant smile. As he looked at it, Pei Qianchuan’s back turned cold.

Ji Xiangkong: “Pei Xi said that their house has an access control on their door. He has to get home before 7, or else he’ll be beaten.”

Pei Qianchuan: ?

Qiu Ying pointed at the clock. “It’s only 6 right now.”

The expression on Ji Xiangkong’s face didn’t change. “It was moved up today.”

Qiu Ying: “Why would Pei Xi set access control for his son?”

Ji Xiangkong: “For me.”

Pei Qianchuan: ……

The next day.

Qiu Ying: Pei Xi! You actually hit a child!

Ji Shenlin: Uncle Pei Xi is a big bad guy! I hate you the most!

Pei Xi: ?

[7]

Pei Qianchuan had never understood why Ji Xiangkong didn’t like him.

When he heard the little boy’s worries, Lin Yixuan took it upon himself to be a caring uncle. He stewed over it for quite a while before patting Pei Qianchuan on the shoulder and sincerely saying, “Don’t worry about it. He doesn’t like your dad, either.”

Pei Xi: ???

t/n: Pei Xi: what’d you say????

[8]

Lu Yiyi was on a business trip, so Lin Yixuan took Lin Yiyi to Ji Xiangkong’s house to mooch a meal. As he thought of Pei Qianchuan’s frustrated expression, Lin Yixuan decided to be a caring uncle and act for the cause of justice.

“Say, Kong ge, what are you trying to do by always preventing the kid from coming over? Pei Qianchuan is smart and handsome, so little girls will chase him wherever he goes, got it?”

As they were eating, Lin Yixuan gave some advice. He realized that Ji Xiangkong wasn’t listening at all, instead tilting his head and staring fixedly at somewhere diagonally in front of him.

Lin Yixuan looked along Ji Xiangkong’s line of sight.

Ji Shenlin was fighting with Lin Yiyi, both smearing whipped cream on the other’s face. When Lin Yiyi’s paws bumped into Ji Shenlin’s soft pink cheeks again, Lin Yixuan felt a gust of cold wind hit his face.

Ji Xiangkong suddenly took Lin Yixuan’s bowl.

Lin Yixuan froze. He gradually raised his head to slowly look at him.

“You’re full.” Ji Xiangkong slowly took away the chopsticks in Lin Yixuan’s hands, smiling at him. “You can take your son with you back home.”
