Extra 3: Daughter’s Slave (Part 2)
[9]
Qiu Ying’s most difficult moments of every day were tutoring Ji Shenlin in math, but Ji Xiangkong still signed the little girl up for a Math Olympiad class over winter break.
The classroom was divided into two areas, the little children sitting in the middle and surrounded by a circle of family members accompanying them in class in order to keep there from being anything the children didn’t understand after class.
As Qiu Ying looked at the fully-packed class curriculum, she grew a bit fearful. She pulled Ji Xiangkong into their room to discuss: “To tell you the truth, someone like me is a tiny bit lacking, I have a math allergy.”
Ji Xiangkong raised his eyebrows.
Qiu Ying’s voice was sincere: “It’s true, I’ll throw up if I do a single math problem.”
Ji Shenlin suddenly jumped out from somewhere and raised her hand up high. “Dad, I have a math allergy too!” She considered it for a few seconds, looked at the math workbook in her hands, and let out a loud retch, touching her chest while completely-seriously saying, “It’s probably genetic.”
The next day, at the supplementary class reception desk, Xie Yanshen, who’d been pulled into being a volunteer, looked at the little boy in front of her and revealed a business-like smile: “Little friend, let me see your class certificate.”
Expressionless, Pei Qianchuan dug out a certificate for accompaniment.
Xie Yanshen: ?
Pei Qianchuan pointed to Ji Shenlin, diagonally in front of him. “I’m her family member.”
[10]
When they were 16, Ji Shenlin and Pei Qianchuan tested into the same high school, but were separated into different classes. Ji Xiangkong cautioned her that the two of them had to maintain a distance between them while at school, else there be a lot of trouble if they failed the college entrance exam. Believing these words, Ji Shenlin pretended as if Pei Qianchuan was a complete stranger to her. This went on until a piece of news spread — the class flower of Pei Qianchuan’s class was making frequent advances toward him.
When she learned Pei Qianchuan had been called out by the class flower for a confession below the trees, Ji Shenlin had just finished running an 800m. She hadn’t even drunk any water. Carelessly, she wiped off the sweat on her face and then rushed to the spot. From far away she could hear the girl softly ask, “Classmate Pei Qianchuan, are you free on Saturday? I have two tickets to an art exhibit…”
“He’s busy on Saturday!”
Before she could react, Ji Shenlin had already cried out. Like a mother hen guarding her young, she separated the two people. And under the class flower’s gaze, vigilant because of the fright, Ji Shenlin rolled her eyes and came up with a random excuse. “He has supplementary classes on Saturday.”
Pei Qianchuan glanced at her and stepped forward to stand at her side. With an expressionless face, he said, “Mhm.”
With Passerby A coming out from nowhere raring for a fight, the class flower was completely bewildered, not understanding what kind of relationship the two of them had. She adjusted her slightly-stiff smile and tried again: “Then are you free on Sunday?”
Pei Qianchuan opened up a can of lemonade and passed it over the his panting childhood friend. He looked at the class flower, then dipped his head down to Ji Shenlin and lightly said, “Whether or not I’m free is whatever she says.”
[11]
“You broke your promise!” Ji Shenlin punched Pei Qianchuan’s chest fiercely. “Your mom said that when we got to school, you’d take care of me!”
Pei Qianchuan caught the fingers that the girl had reached out in one go, slowly raising his eyes to meet her gaze. “How are you hoping for me to take care of you?”
Ji Shenlin was suddenly slightly unable to fight against his gaze. She took back her hand, and after pretending to naturally tuck some of the long hair that had slipped down to her cheek behind her ear, quickly revealed another sweet and harmless smile again. Ji Shenlin sat down next to Pei Qianchuan and closely tugged on the boy’s arm. “Come watch a movie with me tomorrow.”
Pei Qianchuan tilted his head, eyes lowered as he looked at her: “Your dad said that if I have the guts to take you to a dark place, he’ll slaughter me.”
Ji Shenlin twisted around her mouth and made as if to leave. “Then I’ll go find someone else.”
Pei Qianchuan stretched out a long leg to block her path.
“But I’m not afraid of death.”
[12]
Over summer break, Qiu Ying invited Pei Qianchuan to their house to help Ji Shenlin out with her homework. After Pei Qianchuan went into Ji Shenlin’s room, Ji Xiangkong stood guard at the door, like a pillar, unmoving.
When faced with Qiu Ying’s suspicious gaze, Ji Xiangkong laughed and said: “Keep the door open. You’ve got to maintain air circulation in the room while studying.”
Qiu Ying shook her head and dragged him to the living room by the arm. “Close the door. Otherwise, you’ll disturb them.”
Ji Shenlin and Pei Qianchuan worked in her room. After she finished writing the answers, she pushed the test paper before Pei Qianchuan. Pei Qianchuan lowered his eyes and took the test to seriously look at it. After a short moment, he nodded. “Mm, all correct.”
“What kind of reward will I get if I get it right?” Ji Shenlin supported her chin, suddenly drawing nearer, slyly batting her eyes at him. “Will you kiss me?”
Pei Qianchuan stopped moving and turned his face toward her.
“Bang—” The room door suddenly opened. Ji Shenlin and Pei Qianchuan simultaneously raised their heads to see Ji Xiangkong come it.
“Keep going, you two.” Ji Xiangkong set two cups of fruit juice on the desk, patting Pei Qianchuan’s shoulder after he did so. With bitingly clear words he smiled as he said, “Study hard, purely, and properly.”
When the room door closed, Pei Qianchuan expressionlessly looked at Ji Shenlin: “Your dad hopes that we’ll be pure.”
Ji Shenlin wrinkled her nose at him. The corners of Pei Qianchuan’s mouth rose and he raised his hand to rub her head.
After working on problems for another while, Ji Shenlin got bored and started drawing on the paper. Pei Qianchuan reached out to take it, Ji Shenlin hurriedly tried to grab it back. As they fought, Ji Shenlin jumped onto Pei Qianchuan. The two people looked at each other…
“Bang—” The door opened again. Ji Shenlin and Pei Qianchuan immediately separated, one loudly reading out the problem and the other slamming on the calculator.
The room was extremely quiet. Ji Xiangkong gradually approached and set down a plate of fruit on the desk.
“Keep on studying, I won’t disturb you.”
Qiu Ying: I keep on feeling like this plot is a little familiar to me.
Mama Lin: It must be a revenge late by many years.
t/n: Mama Lin is referring to the author (Nanye Lin’er)
[13]
On Valentine’s Day, Summer brought all of the kids to an amusement park, creating a precious opportunity for several families to have a time for just the two of them.
In the evening when they were about to leave and after they sent Ji Shenlin away, Ji Xiangkong and Qiu Ying curled up in their room watching TV. Ji Xiangkong was hugging Qiu Ying, Qiu Ying was hugging a a plush doll. Qiu Ying liked dolls and after Ji Shenlin was born, the dolls that Ji Xiangkong bought were all in pairs. There were times that one was but and the other small, and times that they were the same model. Ji Shenlin knew since she was very young that even she could not casually touch the things that her dad gave to her mom.
The TV was playing the finale of the popular show Born for You. The male and female leads who had been separated were able to create their beautiful ending, and after so many years they revisited the place where they’d first reunited.
Qiu Ying suddenly felt a bit emotional. She raised her head to look at Ji Xiangkong, apricot eyes filled with him. “Nearly ten years have passed, and I still like you so much.”
Ji Xiangkong laughed quietly, lightly rubbing on the hair behind her ears. His fingers traced from her neck to her chin to reach the corner of her mouth.
Time had not left many of its traces on her body, and in his heart, it was like she was always that young lady who sweetly called him “Xiangkong gege”.
For Ji Xiangkong, Qiu Ying was an extremely special person.
When he was scarred and weary, he could tell everyone “I’m fine” as if nothing had happened. But he would tell her, I feel so tired.
He once thought that he didn’t believe in a forever and always, that everything would vanish and everyone would leave, and so when facing frustrations and attacks he could remain unaffected.
However, she appeared. At his most difficult time, he buried his face like a cute child into the crook of her neck, repeating over and over, “Don’t leave me.” At the time, it had been still and silent all around them, lights a dim yellow. There was a sort of feeling that the two of them would depend on each other for the rest of their lives.
He could have nothing, as long as she was still by his side.
Ji Xiangkong thought of the process of how they fell in love, from their first meeting in a foreign country to falling into the abyss and then rising up once more.
Later on, he won many championships, but none were as unforgettable as that experience.
People have very strange feelings about time. There are times when several years seem to slip past like a galloping horse, and there are times when a short few months seem much like a lifetime.
The summer of that year, his career wasn’t going well, he was losing games, he couldn’t see the road in front of him, and he had no one he particularly cared for. Until the girl in front of him used some clumsy reasons to sit in his car, catching him off guard and breaking into his life.
On the TV, the male lead was soliloquizing his feelings: “At that moment, I suddenly understood that perhaps I was born, just for this moment.”
Ji Xiangkong lowered his head, breath falling onto the bridge of Qiu Ying’s nose. He looked into her eyes.
“Qiu Ying, I love you.”
The door of the room wasn’t closed tight. Two little friends were watching through the gap in the doorframe.
Ji Shenlin put two soft pink fists together, pretending as if they were two heads and turning them about close to each other in imitation of her parents. “What are they doing?”
Pei Qianchuan’s ears turned red as he covered the little loli’s eyes.
Suddenly plunged into darkness, Ji Shenlin subconsciously struggled. Pei Qianchuan didn’t want it to blow up into a fight and so with his free hand he took her by the waist to tugged her in tight. Ji Shenlin was in his arms, her back on his chest, and the girl suddenly stopped her resistance and obediently let him hug her.
Pei Qianchuan took advantage of Princess Ji’s rare obedience to drag her to the living room. “Have you found what you want to bring? Everyone’s waiting downstairs.”
Once Ji Shenlin recovered her freedom to move, her cheeks were red and she looked a bit stupefied, still, only returning to herself after a few seconds. She pinched his arm with a huff. “Why won’t you answer me?”
Pei Qianchuan didn’t avoid it. He covered her “forceful” paws with the palms of his hands. With eyes lowered and a low voice, he said, “When you grow up, I’ll tell you.”
[14]
When Ji Shenlin was still a little dumpling, she liked to kiss very much. Qiu Ying told her that this was a way to express liking.
So when Pei Xi first led Pei Qianchuan before her, she bounced in front of him, going up on her tiptoes to near his face.
Very many years later, she would still think that Pei Qianchuan was the best-looking boy she’d ever seen.
Ji Xiangkong immediately reached out to stick a hand between the two of them. The little dumpling attempted and failed to commit the crime, making a loud “bop” in her own father’s palm.
Ji Xiangkong gathered her into his arms with a smile, moving back by a couple steps to increase their distance between Pei Xi and his son. “You can’t casually kiss boys.”
Ji Shenlin blinked doubtfully. “Why?”
“They’ll get a rash,” Ji Xiangkong described it to her in a mock-serious manner. “It spreads from the place where you kiss them, all the way across their whole body. It’s very scary.”
Pei Qianchuan: ?
Pei Xi: ……
[15]
Lin Yiyi had one ankle placed atop his knee, body sinking into the sofa as if he was boneless, head tilted at a 45-degree angle and doing his best to bend himself into an unruly shape. After he finished watching the person in front of him perform, his brows knit together with a sense of disgust in his imposing expression.
“Hey Ji Shenlin, are you doing to dance this for the competition?” Lin Yiyi straightened up from the sofa, voice pained. “This one? The choreographer hates you, no?”
Ji Shenlin raised her chin, quite unconvinced. “My dad helped me change all this, he said that the best dancers dance all sunny and healthy, and upbeat!”
Lin Yiyi spread out both his hands in confusion. “So you’re sunny and upbeat, but there’s no need to change a girl group’s audition dance into elementary school PE, is there?”
Ji Shenlin grabbed a pillow and chucked it at him. “What do you know, you uncoordinated, awkward, bum!”
When Pei Qianchuan opened the door and entered the room, Lin Yiyi and Ji Shenlin were nearly about to break out into a fight. He was just in time to see Lin Yiyi raise a hand to point at the flower-patterned dress hanging outside Ji Shenlin’s wardrobe and yell with a voice filled with the spirit of manliness: “If you win this competition, I’ll wear girls’ clothing to school!”
Pei Qianchuan stood between the two of them without a single expression, separating them. Lin Yiyi’s eyes instantly lit up and he put his arm on his shoulder. “Bro, just in time, I won’t be the only one who goes blind.”
He made a face at Ji Shenlin. “Here, dance for him and see whether he’ll think that you’ll get eliminated in the first round.”
Pei Qianchuan glanced lightly at them, then tidied up the table that they’d messed up with lowered eyes, looking for all the world like he didn’t care at all.
But Ji Shenlin’s fighting spirit had been roused. The music played, she danced in excitement for Pei Qianchuan to see, and when the song ended, she improvised, raised her arms above her head, formed a heart toward Pei Qianchuan, making a cute: “Chu~”
The entire room fell into silence.
When he realized that the person next to him was as still as if he’d been frozen, Lin Yiyi elbowed Pei Qianchuan, with still no response.
“Have you gotten thunderstruck? I said…” Lin Yiyi hadn’t even finished speaking before his expression suddenly froze, pupils quaking.
He was terrified to see a flush staining Pei Qianchuan’s pale cheeks, spreading all the way to his neck.
After a good long while, Pei Qianchuan gradually turned to face Lin Yiyi, expressionless as he asked, “What kind of girls’ clothing do you like?”
t/n: And finally, a Weibo post that wasn’t included in the main collection:
(… things about how she was thinking about getting a CP drawing for the pair but later decided it sounded bothersome …)
My head randomly came up with the several little friends curled up on the sofa for New Year’s, Ji Shenlin close next to Pei Qianchuan, and Ji Xiangkong went in front of them, moved Pei Qianchuan aside a little bit, and then sat right in between the two of them. 👌 [laughing cat.jpg]

Okay, this is the end for real now. I think I said most of the things I wanted to say at the end of the novel, but again I want to reiterate my thanks for all of your support and comments. This project really meant a lot to me, as my first translating project, and it made me so very happy to see other people enjoying it as well. <33
