Chapter 14 of 32

13 - Sleep Helps a Child Grow

6 min read1,503 words

Alan and I registered as friends and parted ways.

The grilled meat skewers were simple, just seasoned with salt, but whether it was the benefit of his cooking skills, or the meat being good to begin with, they were quite tasty.

Uluru seemed satisfied with it.

He also asked me to sell him any meat or food stuff I found that could be used as ingredients.

In exchange, I would get a three percent discount on the food, which would probably improve my food situation somewhat.

So I went to the northern grasslands to hunt rabbits and get some meat.

I’m going to pick up a lot of grass while I’m at it.

Immediately, one of them came out of the grass.

Wild Rabbit LV?

I throw a knife and it stabs it through his thigh, taking away his mobility.

“Uluru, go.”

“Woon!”

Uluru runs and bites at the rabbit’s throat as it tries to escape.

The rabbit flailed about and delivered some rather powerful looking kicks, but Uluru was not intimidated and continued to bite, and after a while the rabbit stopped moving.

Uluru came to me with the rabbit in his mouth. He didn’t seem to have any serious injuries, but he was licking the spot where the rabbit had kicked him. Was it painful?

“There, there, Uluru, you did good.”

“Kuun.”

I stroked Uluru and he squinted his eyes as if it felt good.

I pulled the knife out of the rabbit and put it in my inventory. I didn’t do “Drop” that Taku did yesterday because I wouldn’t get all of the materials.

◇

While hunting and gathering various grass and nuts, I noticed that the sun was already above me, and it was time to have lunch in real life.

“Uluru, come here, I’m leaving.”

I called out to Uluru, who was running around the meadow, sucking nuts and rolling around.

Uluru answered my call and walked quickly toward me. But in the middle of his walk, he suddenly disappeared.

“Huh? Uluru?”

In a bit of a panic, I went by the grass where Uluru had disappeared, and found a small hole in the grass.

It seems that Uluru had fallen into it.

“Uluru, are you alive?”

“Woon.”

When I called out into the hole, I heard Uluru’s voice. Thank god.

After a short wait, Uluru crawled out of the hole on his own. …With a baby rabbit in his mouth.

“Fumu, I see, I thought the rabbits here were wild rabbits, but they also have the characteristics of cave rabbits.”

“?”

Uluru went in and out of the hole several times and caught six rabbits in total.

Now, what to do with these rabbits, specifically with the rabbit-chan.

I was a little torn, but I decided to try tasting the rabbit, since there were only a few edible parts in the meat.

Baby Rabbit LV1

“Low-level contract taming.”

◇

The taming was successfully completed, and after packing the six rabbits into the leather bags, I returned to the library.

I gave Uluru some extra skewers for lunch, and put some of the medicinal herbs in the bag for Usagi and the others.

“Well then, Uluru, keep an eye on the rabbit.”

“Woon.”

I waved slightly at Uluru, who sat down and looked at me, and then I logged out to eat my lunch.

…I’m a little worried that Usagi will become Uluru’s meal.

◇

After a quick lunch, I made sure I was well hydrated and finished various chores before logging back in.

When I opened my eyelids and looked towards Uluru, he was curled up asleep with the rabbit laying around him.

"

"

They seemed to have become instant friends, and they even crossed the species boundaries.

Rabbit Poop Quality:E Rarity:1 Durability:E

Notes: Rabbit poop.

I’ve heard that rabbit poop can be used well as fertilizer, the rest…can be used for the jar, or something, so let’s collect it for the time being.

Then I put mana into the jar, but there was nothing to do.

I can’t bear to wake up Uluru and the rabbit who are tired and asleep to go hunting outside…So I’ll just read a book.

“Hmm……hmmm….”

Suddenly, it occurred to me to pick up the shiny book.

I looked around the library, but this was the only glowing book I could find.

When I opened the book, I found that it was blank.

However….I noticed something.

There were clearly too many pages for the thickness of the book.

No matter how hard I flipped, I couldn’t get to the last page.

I had no choice but to close the book and put it back on the shelf. ….I used appraisal to see if I could see what it’s about.

Book Quality:? Rarity:? Durability:?

Notes: ?

It was a book that was clearly in bad shape.

When I appraise other books, I get this.

Botanical Book Quality:C Rarity:2 Durability:C

Note: A book with information on plants.

Demon Book Quality:C Rarity:2 Durability:C

Note: A book with information on demons.

It turns out that it is a considerable item with the information it has.

I guess I shouldn’t have touched it so carelessly.

I had no choice but to go to the library and read some books.

◇

“Ho ho ho, pretty little child, are you reading?“

“Hm?”

As I sat in the chair reading the picture book called “Malebito and the Puppet Princess”, the old man stood behind me for the first time in a day.

He had that shiny book in his hand and was leading Uluru and Usagi behind him.

“Old man, I never told you. My name is Yuki, and I’m sixteen years old.”

“Hou, I’m surprised.”

He said that, with the same unsurprised look on his face.

Besides, I should apologize.

“By the way, Old man, I’m sorry I touched that shiny book without permission. Is it something important?”

“…I see, it does appear to glow.”

“?”

The old man muttered something in a whisper, I don’t know what he was saying, but anyway, there is one more thing I should apologize for.

Uluru came over to me, I patted him on the head and asked him to sit down.

When Uluru sat down, Usagi sat behind him and they began grooming each other. Their fur danced in the setting sun.

“And old man, I let Uluru and the rabbit on my own, but are any other pets except cats prohibited? Because a lot of their fur has fallen…”

“I don’t mind, the dolls will clean up.”

The dolls are pretty handy, huh? Anyway, I’m glad he forgave me.

“By the way, Yuki.”

“Hmm? What’s with the sudden change, Old man?”

You always act like a good-natured old man, but when you call my name with a serious face, I get defensive. Are you still angry?

The old man placed the shiny book in front of me.

“Put your hand on this book, please.”

“? …Like this?”

“Umu.”

I did as he asked and put my hand on the cover of the shiny book.

Perhaps it was because my hands were so small, but the book looked even bigger.

“This book is a blank book.”

“A blank book?”

“It will only be of use to those who are qualified.”

“A qualified…person?”

It was a strangely haunting voice, echoing and penetrating deep between.

“I was given this a long time ago by the Golden Fleece.”

“Wh…at?”

As I tried to articulate the question I heard, I realized that my consciousness was fading.

“Yuki.”

“Wh….at….”

My consciousness faded as if I were sinking.

—Please….hel….p….me…

◇

When I opened my dull, heavy consciousness and leaden eyelids, I saw that everything was white.

In a white world that goes on forever, there is only me and that shiny book.

The glowing book opened quietly and gently.

It was a page where nothing was supposed to be written.

….character…..holder…Yuki?

I read the words that emerged on the white page.

….summoning……contracting……magic

After reading that much, I reached my limit.

My heavy consciousness sank in.

It was as if I was falling asleep.

I lost consciousness.

When I woke up, I was in my room, and it was already pitch black outside.

Growl~~.

“….I’m hungry.”

I decided to eat, take a bath, get ready for bed, stretch and then go to sleep.

I immediately got up and left the room.

“?”

Suddenly, I thought I saw something silver in the corner of my eye.

I turned around and saw that it was nothing, just my hair reflecting the light.

“…I have to get up early tomorrow.”

I muttered, and ran down the stairs.
