"I've decided not to expect anything more from you."
One day, my father said this to me, Norman Eslund.
"Y-Yes..."
I had a feeling why he would say such a thing, so all I could do was nod.
"To be honest, it's unprecedented that you still can't use magic at the age of almost 15."
That's right, I'm almost 15, and I still can't use magic.
My family is a prestigious magical family that has produced generations of magicians. Of course, both my parents are magicians, and my younger sister has already shown her magical talent.
If your parents are magicians, their children should naturally be able to use magic, but for some reason, I can't.
"I'm truly disappointed in you, being the only heir."
In this country, only males can inherit the family name.
So, if I can't use magic, it will be a serious problem.
In this country, only magicians can become nobles.
If I can't use magic, our family will lose its noble status.
Even though I understand this, I can't do anything because I can't use magic at all.
"That's why I've decided to expel you from the Eslund family."
"Huh?"
"I've decided to adopt someone else. I want that person to become the heir of the Eslund family."
Expel? Adopt? Heir? My head was in a whirl from the sudden barrage of words.
I had just heard about this for the first time.
"Please wait! I haven't given up yet!"
"That's why I said I've decided not to expect anything more from you."
I was stunned by the true meaning of his words.
"Are you going to expel me right away...?"
"Yeah, as soon as possible. I don't want to see your face anymore."
"Have you already decided on the adoptee?"
"Yeah, there's an excellent magician from a commoner background, unlike you. I'll introduce him to you soon."
It seemed that my expulsion from the family was a done deal.
◆
The day after my father's shocking announcement, I went to my usual magic school.
"Let's start with a review of yesterday's lesson."
On the podium in the classroom, Mr. Ludon stood.
Mr. Ludon is a tall, thin man who always teaches in a monotonous manner, so he's not very popular with the students.
"Try to perform the fire magic we learned yesterday while recalling what you learned."
When Mr. Ludon said this, the students in the classroom started writing magic circles on paper while looking at their magic books, and then began chanting spells.
Then, fireballs appeared in their palms.
I also tried to write the magic circle and chant the spell, following everyone else.
"Did everyone succeed?"
"Teacher, there's one person who didn't succeed."
Someone answered Mr. Ludon's question, and their voice was clearly mocking.
"Again, Norman?"
The teacher said this with a sigh of exasperation.
I was trying my best to chant the spell, but I couldn't perform the fire magic at all.
"Listen, Norman. Chanting the spell blindly won't do any good."
Saying this, the teacher came over to me.
"Close your eyes and listen to the voice of the fire spirit."
"Yes."
I closed my eyes as instructed.
"How about it? Can you hear the voice of the fire spirit?"
"…Yes."
I replied, but in truth, I couldn't hear the voice of the fire spirit at all.
"If you can hear it, try to command the fire spirit with the spell."
"---Ignite."
I chanted.
I slowly opened my eyes.
Nothing happened.
The teacher sighed, "Haa," and suddenly, the classroom was filled with laughter at my expense.
"You really seem to have no talent if you can't even perform basic magic."
"S-Sorry..."
I apologized in a small voice.
The class continued, ignoring me.
During this time, I could only shrink and look down.
"Norman, come here."
After class, Mr. Ludon called me over.
My feet felt heavy, as I could guess why he was calling me.
"What is it?"
"Shouldn't you give up on learning magic by now?"
I'm 14, but the other students in the classroom are mostly 10 or 11 years old.
This school has three courses: basic, advanced, and development. All the students my age are in the development course.
Of course, I'm in the basic course.
Incidentally, I've been attending this school since I was 10, so I've been in the basic course for four years.
"There are people who, no matter how hard they try, can't use magic. You're probably one of them."
"Maybe you're right..."
I could only nod silently at Mr. Ludon's words.
How can I ever learn to use magic?
