The next day, I attended school after skipping an entire day. Ritsu had only one friend with whom he could walk to school, but since he lived in the opposite direction, it was a lonely journey.
Seeing all the boys and girls around his age walk to school together, Ritsu sighed.
(Haa, if only I didn’t have training)
It felt like my Inner Kikou weakened involuntarily, but I’m sure that’s just my imagination.
As I changed my shoes in front of the shoe box as always, I heard a voice.
“Oi Ritsu! Where were you yesterday?”
Turning back, I saw a bunch of students along with Kenji entering the school building.
“Ah yesterday, I wasn’t feeling too well you see…”
As I answered crisply in a poor manner,
“Stop lying, you ass! I bet you were training or something, weren’t you?”
Said Kenji while changing his shoes, with a smile on his face.
(Training isn’t too far off to be honest)
“You got me.”
“Knew it.”
Kenji muttered while smiling bitterly.
“Oi-, Yozakura~, training’s fine and all but you better keep up with your studies, yeah?”
Questioned Kiryuu Sota, who came in with Kenji.
As I started feeling relieved at returning to everyday life, Kenji said “let’s go already”, so we went straight to our classroom.
“Hey Ritsu, did you hear about the incident that took place yesterday? Apparently they found 5 bodies burnt alive in the Northern Ward.”
Kenji turned back on his desk and started small talk.
“Ah, yeah, I think it happened near the forest in the Northern Ward?”
Tohto*, where I live in is the capital of Japan and is circular in shape. It was divided into 5 sectors. A Central Ward for the centre, which was surrounded by four wards on each side of roughly the same area. Northern Ward for the north, Eastern Ward for the east, Southern Ward for the south, and a Western ward for the west.
To further north of the Northern Ward, spread a large forest; while the southeastern part of the Southern Ward, and the entire Eastern Ward faced the sea.
In addition, since the Central Ward faced all the other wards, the head offices of all companies as well as the ministry buildings were erected in it. Even the parliament building was built there.
“It’s scary somehow, isn’t it? Five people burnt to death in a forest. We live in the Northern Sector so even more so.”
“Yeah. I’m pretty sure they still haven’t found a cause, have they?”
While we were talking, the chime for the first period rang so Kenji faced forward and our lesson began as always.
After school ended and I turned the TV on, the news still reported the same thing from morning.
“Again?”
According to the news, two abnormal deaths were reported from the Southern Ward, three from the Western Ward, and so on.
Moreover, according to this newscaster, the same phenomenon was taking place all over Japan, as well as the rest of the world.
“What could it be?”
At this scale, it couldn’t be dismissed as a coincidence anymore.
Ritsu, who was suspicious about the whole thing but didn’t care much, went out for his daily running.
“Hm?”
(Isn’t something glowing there?)
While I was running with just the right amount of load on my body, I noticed a large light off in the distance. As I neared it,
“This is…”
The blue light from then was slightly off from where people would normally gather.
(I dismissed it as light back then, but now I can say for sure that this is ki)
I touched the light hesitatingly, but nothing happened this time when I touched it. I could only feel a huge ‘ki’ standing in place.
“What could this mean?”
(Why is no one else seeing this light?)
“Can normal people not see it? But I could see it from the beginning…”
Thinking there’s no point in staying here any longer, I decided to head back home.
Even after returning home the mystery only deepened, and unable to come up with an explanation, I stopped thinking about it all-together and went to sleep.
After that, the abnormal deaths continued to occur, and I increasingly came upon large masses of ki whenever I went running.
<Tohto Metropolitan Police Department>
“Igarashi-senpai, another one.”
Tashiro received a call, and informed Igarashi.
“Again, just how many does this make…”
From the discovery of those 5 strange bodies, the number of abnormal deaths continued at an alarming rate.
The headquarters which monitored the situation closely, was working on creating a cooperation system between each ward; but in reality, not much progress was being made on that end.
“Oi, Tashiro, bring me the camera footage from near the scenes. I’ll go over them once again.”
In order to find a new lead, Igarashi ordered Tashiro to bring the camera footage which was originally left to a different team to dissect.
“Yes boss.”
Tashiro and Igarashi switched on the computer, and while combing through the footage, Tashiro came across something odd.
“This person, I saw him in the previous crime-scene footage as well, at around 5 PM.”
“Is something wrong?”
“No. It may be unrelated but this boy out on a run, if we rewind the footage by a few hours back he can be located at multiple crime scenes. Moreover, though I’m not sure, he keeps staring at the exact spot where the bodies were found.”

The capital city in this world is not tokyo, but Tohto since it’s fictional. Sorry for the confusion, I’ll be making the correction in previous chapters as well.
