Maybe seeing that Peijin hadn’t replied in a long time, Meng Meng directly sent her a call request.
Peijin subconsciously hung up. Currently her feelings were a mess, she really wasn’t in the mood to bicker with Meng Meng.
However, questions that should be asked, still must be asked.
[ Little Five: Why didn’t you tell me first that Xu Yi would confess to He Xun today? ] Peijin had to admit, after finding that someone else had stolen her place at He Xun’s side, she truly had been a little bit upset.
Although she couldn’t name the specific reason, she had been upset. It was like something you owned had been stolen.
Meng Meng’s reply came straight away.
[ Meng Meng: My idol, you’re mistaken! I didn’t know that she would confess tonight either! Really! ]
[ Meng Meng: She never even told me this too! Seriously, seriously, seriously, you have to believe me! ]
[ Meng Meng: I just wanted to drink coffee and hang out with everyone. The more the merrier! ]
[ Little Five: Alright, then next time if there’s anything you have to tell me. ]
[ Meng Meng: Gotcha! You have my word! ]
While Peijin was chatting with Meng Meng, He Xun and Zheng were also texting on Wechat.
[ Zheng Family’s Prince: Wtf, Ah’Xun, did you kiss (1) your nerd tonight? ]
(1) This was said in English, indicated by an underline; refers to a kiss on the lips.
The corner of He Xun’s mouths faintly curved up, his slender fingers tapped the screen, [ He Xun: Type properly, why are you calling it a kiss ? ]
[ Zheng Family’s Prince: Even though it was only on the forehead, if you round it up it’s a kiss . ]
[ He Xun: Where did you get this information from? ]
[ Zheng Family’s Prince: Well, the Campus Belle said it and then it passed from person to another, quickly spreading to where I was. But thankfully nobody took any photos, if someone were to have, then it would be a bit of a problem. ]
[ He Xun: Did anyone say anything? ]
[ Zheng Family’s Prince: At the start, no one had expected you to actually like guys, they were pretty curious about Peijin too. However I took it upon myself to straighten it out for you. I sent out a message saying that this Campus Belle’s confession had failed and was deliberately slandering you. ]
He Xun stared at Zheng Li’s message, he didn’t reply straight away.
He really had been a little impulsive tonight, he hadn’t taken into account what consequences that kiss would bring. Although he personally didn’t care much for the opinions of others, if it had too big of an impact, it might affect Peijin’s usual life.
If Peijin was a woman, naturally it would be the best. if Peijin were a man, then they would probably face some trouble in the future. And these troubles would require him to weigh and resolve them.
[ He Xun: Thank you, bro. ]
[ Zheng Family’s Prince: Between brothers, there’s no need to be so polite. Right, He Xun, I wanted to ask before, when did you start to like men? ]
Like men, huh?
He, likes men?
Actually, he really didn’t.
He Xun mulled over it for a few seconds before answering Zheng Li’s question.
[ He Xun: To say it more precisely, I identify (1) with Peijin. ] After coming to terms with his feelings, he never strayed away or hesitated, he would not flee from his heart like most people, let alone consciously stay away from Peijin. Once he had set his mind on something, or on anyone, then he would put his all into pursuing it. In addition, he feared nothing about the trouble-filled future.
(1) “Identify” is the word 认定, in Mandarin, there is a saying called 我认定你, roughly translating to I’ve chosen you (essentially “I chose you for the rest of my life”). In a colloquial sense, He Xun has said this, however in context to the story, identify would fit better since in America we would say “I identify as (sexuality).”
On Zheng Li’s side he thought it over for a moment and then replied, [ Zheng Family’s Prince: I see, bro. No matter what happens in the future, I’ll always stand by your side. ]
The next day was Friday. Everytime it was Friday, the atmosphere within their classroom would become especially lively, because of the upcoming two-day weekend.
Peijin was also influenced by the good mood of her classmates around her and an apparent faint smile hung on face.
But after the blond-haired, blue-eyed beauty of a foreign language teacher walked into class, she could no longer bring out a small smile.
The all-boy’s highschool as an upper-class school, had their english classes always taught by a foreign teacher (1). In addition, the whole course was communicated in English.
(1) 外教 literally translates to ‘foreign teacher’, termed for overseas teachers who come to China and teach English. There is some controversy over it’s usage, as it’s typically, or used to be, stereotyped toward Caucasian foreign language teachers.
At present, it actually wasn’t anything unusual to have English taught by foreign language teachers, a lot of schools all operated like so. However, here was the problem, prior to Peijin’s transmigration, the school she attended wasn’t taught by a foreign teacher, nor did any of the classes have all-english exchanges. So although her English was very good, her speaking could only be considered average.
If she were to say there was anything that rather tormented her from transmigrating, the fear of her downfall counted as one and her past most favorite, now most hated, English class, would also count.
She seriously couldn’t keep pace with the foreign language teacher’s rhythm, and listening to lessons was really difficult. Thankfully she had a very strong foundation from prior, so daily quizzes were no problem at all. But it just happened that this foreign language teacher especially liked to call out people to answer questions, additionally she most favored situational teaching.
Peijin resignedly opened her textbook and notes, gesturing her intention to seriously attend class.
This English lesson was the same as before, the foreign language teacher would first explain an English test they had just finished the day before. Peijin diligently listened and tried to understand all her mistakes.
Even though she was still unable to follow the class’s pace, at the very least she adapted much better than she did when she first transmigrated. At that time she still wasn’t habituated to the foreign teacher’s accent and listening in class was like listening to a book from the heavens. She believed that after some more time passed, she would be able to gradually get accustomed to the pace at which the foreign language teacher taught at.
Once she finished explaining, it was the speaking-portion bit that Peijin hated the most- the recreating scenes segment.
The foreign language teacher had given herself a very classy Chinese name, Yang Meili. She was obsessed with Chinese cuisine as well as culture and recently she had been particularly addicted to a certain trending short-video app. What she enjoyed the most were the performances that took place each class, because it was very amusing to see her students act.
Yang Meili said in her native language with a smile, “As of late, I saw a very interesting video, let me show it to you all first.”
In the video there was a very attractive male-female couple.
[ Girl A, angry: Who was the girl who messaged you last time? ]
[ Boy B, calmly: My little sister. ]
[ Girl A, verge of tears: You’re lying. ]
[ A: Who was the girl you went out to eat with last time? ]
[ B: My god-sister. ]
[ A: You’re lying. ]
[ A: Who was that woman who you were dog walking with last time? ]
[ B: My mother. ]
[ A: Oh my god, you’re lying again! ]
The ten-second video quickly came to an end.
After watching the video, many guys in the class laughed out meaningfully.
“When I finished watching that video, I decided I would let you all reproduce the scene.” As a young foreign language teacher, Yang Melili still had a lot of viceful tastes (1). She was very playful.
(1) 恶趣味 directly translates to “bad” or “evil” tastes, it focuses on hobbies that are not exactly socially acceptable. Sometimes, perhaps even in this context, relates to the enjoyment of BL/GL material. Such as the japanese word for ‘fujoshi’, which translates to ‘rotten girl’- this could translate to ‘rotten taste’.
To let two boys perform such a conversation, she felt it would be extremely amusing. Finished, she said with a beaming smile, “I know every time you all won’t voluntarily participate, so this time, I will still do the same as I did before, I’ll take the initiative to call names.”
Peijin desperately bowed down her head, just hoping that she would become invisible, not wanting to be noticed by Yang Meili.
In the video from a moment ago, the two people were conversing in Chinese, this implied that the performers had to automatically translate this piece of dialogue into English while acting it out.
To the current Peijin, this was a bit difficult. Of course, this piece of dialogue wasn’t too hard and after thinking it over, it wasn’t even hard to act it out. But Peijin didn’t have a strong desire at all to perform, in addition she didn’t dare speak aloud that kind of learnt English. She was good at testing, but face-to-face communication was a bit hard for her.
Perhaps the more afraid of something you were, the more it would come. The more Peijin acted like she was invisible, the more Yang Meli would notice her acting like an ostrich. (1)
(1) Referring to the myth of ostriches burying their heads in the sand when threatened/scared.
She immediately called out Peijin’s name, saying, “Let’s have this new transfer-student come act, I’ll choose another one from the rest….”
Before Yang Meili had the time to assign another candidate, He Xun had already taken the initiative to raise his hand, “Teach, let me!”
Yang Meli hadn’t expected a day where the class’s most handsome student, He Xun, would voluntarily ask to participate in an activity. She had almost thought that the sun had risen from the west.
With the wave of her hand, the two people to perform the scene’s recreation were decided, specifically, Peijin and He Xun.
A round of applause came from the others in support.
Peijin’s eyes widened in astonishment, she had never thought that He Xun, who never liked to join in on the fun, would actually proactively respond to their foreign language teacher!
When He Xun was passing by Peijin, he leaned by Peijin’s ear and said, “Peipei, my spoken English isn’t great, so you’ll have to be the girl.”
If your English isn’t good then why did you say you wanted to participate so energetically?!
Her spoken English wasn’t great either! Evidently the girl in the video had more lines to say. She actually had originally wanted to play the boy in video, he had no more than a few words and each word was extremely simple.
What was He Xun making more trouble for!
But no matter how Peijin cursed in her heart, a performance still needed to be performed. And at this time, it would be impossible to switch out.
After coming to the front stage, Peijin clumsily stumbled out the first words the girl in that video had said.
“Who was the girl who messaged you last time?”
After speaking the first words, the following gradually became smoother.
However as she spoke, Peijin felt kind of weird.
Although the sentences given to He Xun were very simple, his accent was perfect and the intoniations were very elegant.
No matter how she looked at it, He Xun’s attitude didn’t resemble a person who spoke poor English?
So much so that He Xun gave Peijin a kind of feeling that actually, he was an extremely fluent speaker.
The boy and girl within the video were a couple, the girl suspected the boy to have cheated on her with a couple of other girls, so she questioned him with visible anger. However when it came to He Xun, she truly couldn’t get angry.
He Xun looked at her with a wry expression, faint and clear amusement in his deep, black pupils. He looked at her like he was looking at a girlfriend, who was throwing a fit and purposefully being petty.
His eyes were rather apologetic and doting, it made Peijin unable to look any longer.
She slightly lowered her head, her heart beat wildly, she just wanted to smoothly finish this conversation.
Fortunately the half-minute performance soon came to a close.
Once it ended, fervent applause resounded in the class. There were even whistles aside from the applause.
Zheng Li knowingly smiled. It seemed that there really was some of that significance in the conversance the two performed. Peijin was an unreasonable little girl and He Xun was like a big man who accommodated (1) her. Of course, his brother He Xun and the guy in the video suspected of stepping onto several boats (2) were absolutely different.
(1) I wanted to clarify the word usage, 包容 directly translates to accommodating, however in a romantic sense within daily language, it’s more like being ‘loving’/’cherishing’, so something like ‘doting patience/tolerance’ would be more accurate.
(2) The original saying is “脚踏两只船”, having a foot in two boats; meaning they are unable to make up their minds, but it also means keeping a relationship for one’s own benefit. In modern context, it means they are playing around with other’s feelings.
As soon as she finished saying the last word, Peijin let out a long sigh of relief.
The recreated scene’s performance was finally done!
But just as she had relaxed a bit, He Xun took her by surprise and slightly bent over, saying word for word by her ear, “I don’t have a sister in my family, I haven’t taken any god-sisters, and my mother has already passed away. I, don’t like to lie, and I have never gone out alone with any girls.”
Peijin’s face was stricken dumb (1), what did this mean?!
(1) This is an internet saying that originally came from Northeastern dialect, it refers that after being struck by lightning, the face afterward stays open-mouthed and eyes wide. It means being surprised, but unconvinced by a situation.
Most importantly, why was He Xun telling her this?
“So….” He Xun looked Peijin in the eye, his peach blossom eyes curving, slowly saying the rest of his words, “I’m still a pretty reliable person.”
Author’s Note:
Reliable! So you can give it a try!
Right, this scene’s conversation came from Douyin (Tiktok).
T/N: The author goes on to endorse a friend’s novel here, it is BL. If you are not into BL, I have placed a button below to continue to the next chapter, however, I feel like I would be doing a disservice and being disrespectful to the author for not including her endorsement, since she’s doing it on part of being a good friend. I highly recommend you take a look. (Also, thank you for your supportive messages last chapter, I sincerely appreciate them! <3)
