Chapter 24

5 min read1,369 words

"Inside our bodies, an enzyme is secreted that helps us resist the direct death virus's attack on our genetic chains, preventing them from collapsing and turning us into zombies. It also blocks our path to evolution."

"Our rate of evolution will become very slow, far behind that of zombies and animals."

"The evolution rates of zombies, animals, and humans decrease in that order."

"If the rapid evolution of zombies is due to their completely collapsed genetic chains, then the faster evolution of animals compared to humans is because they adapt to evolution more quickly and sensitively."

"Humans do not pay attention to insignificant changes in their bodies, but animals do. More importantly, animals are inherently stronger and faster than humans."

"Therefore, if my hypothesis is correct, our true enemies in the future will be ferocious animals that cover the entire Earth, surpassing our imagination."

Luoshui spoke calmly, her tone firm and confident, giving her a captivating beauty.

"Dr. Luoshui, I read your paper. Perhaps many still have objections, but I believe your hypothesis. According to what you said, should our strategic focus now shift from zombies to those animals?"

"Zombies will eventually collapse, but before that, we cannot be complacent. At the very least, we cannot let any King go. Any King, once discovered, must be eliminated! Otherwise, we might not live to see the day when the zombies collapse."

...

In Melbourne, it was another sunny day. It seemed that since the outbreak of the direct death virus, it had not rained for half a year. The scorching heat and drought made the already rampant direct death virus even more intense, ravaging every zombie.

On Melbourne's most famous shopping street, Li Mu slowly walked, his grayish-white eyes scanning everything around him. Whether it was the broken outdoor advertisements or the rotten, yellow garbage in the trash cans, they all seemed to catch his attention, making him stop from time to time.

A red mutant parrot perched on Li Mu's shoulder, speaking listlessly and constantly cursing the heat, "It's so hot, so hot. Your Majesty, I'm really going to die from the heat."

Li Mu occasionally turned back, nodding at the red mutant parrot, then continued to search his surroundings. The red mutant parrot felt defeated, turning its gaze to Charlie, almost laughing out loud.

This stupid zombie had somehow put a trash can on its head, roaring continuously but unable to remove it. It could only charge around in a frenzy.

"Is this idiot trying to lick the sanitary napkins in the trash can?"

Who knew who the red mutant parrot's former owner was. After mutating, its intelligence increased significantly, and it knew quite a bit about the strange and bizarre things humans did.

Bang!

As expected, the red mutant parrot's prediction came true. Charlie, with the trash can on its head, directly knocked over an advertisement board, immediately drawing Li Mu's attention.

The red mutant parrot immediately covered its eyes, unable to bear the sight of Charlie's miserable state, "If you don't court death, you won't die. Stupid, you're done. Get ready for the lash of your Majesty!"

But to the red mutant parrot's surprise, Li Mu's black bone spines, which it hated so much, did not come whistling to brutally whip Charlie.

"Has your Majesty changed recently?" the red mutant parrot called out in surprise, flying up, "Your Majesty, that idiot..."

Bang!

The red mutant parrot was instantly sent flying, crashing through the glass of a nearby store.

"Why am I the one who gets hurt again?!"

The red mutant parrot shouted in anger.

Li Mu ignored its cries, his grayish-white eyes flickering as he walked step by step toward Charlie. Charlie was somewhat fearful but dared not move, only staring with blood-red eyes and growling uneasily.

Bang!

Then Charlie was also whipped away, rolling into the store and unable to get up for a long time. The red mutant parrot instantly regained its balance, quickly flying up to mock Charlie, "Stupid..."

As soon as the catchphrase left its mouth, the red mutant parrot immediately covered its beak, relieved that Li Mu's unpredictable and painful black bone spines did not come whistling. It lowered its voice to mock Charlie, "Stupid. Got beaten, got hurt..."

Charlie roared and pounced at the red mutant parrot.

A zombie and a bird instantly engaged in a fierce battle. Li Mu ignored them, his grayish-white eyes calmly observing the fallen advertisement board on the ground. He examined it carefully, then looked down at himself, his violent aura fluctuating.

Charlie and the red mutant parrot instantly stiffened, quickly lying down, covering their heads, and sticking out their butts.

Li Mu's black bone spines swung, instantly piercing through a passing low-level zombie. The blood in his eyes gradually faded, and he turned his gaze to Charlie and the red mutant parrot.

The zombie and the bird, under Li Mu's gaze, quickly got up from the ground. Charlie continued to stare with blood-red eyes, drooling and following behind Li Mu, while the red mutant parrot obediently landed on Li Mu's shoulder.

"Your Majesty, do you want to listen to a song?"

"I am a tiny, tiny bird, wanting to fly but can't fly high..."

Li Mu's grayish-white eyes flickered, looking at the store in front of him, and he took a large step inside.

"Huh. Burberry. Your Majesty, good taste."

The red mutant parrot immediately started flattering him.

Li Mu ignored it, walking into the store with large strides, his gaze falling on the clothes that, despite being covered in dust and scattered on the ground, still exuded elegance.

A few store employees, who seemed to have turned into zombies, lay on the ground, their foreheads pierced, dead beyond any doubt, scattered in the corners of the store.

Li Mu slowly walked around the store, the red mutant parrot rolling its eyes, trying to guess Li Mu's thoughts. When Li Mu reached out to grab a light camel-colored windbreaker, the red mutant parrot instantly understood.

"Your Majesty, I've been meaning to say this. Although your muscles are so magnificent and your skin so unique, something always seemed to be missing. It turns out it was a cool and stylish windbreaker like this."

The red mutant parrot started chattering.

Li Mu turned to look at the red mutant parrot, extending the hand holding the windbreaker toward it.

"Your Majesty, this windbreaker on you is simply too cool. A stupid zombie like that will never have such a unique and elegant taste."

The red mutant parrot immediately fawned, using its claws and beak to help Li Mu put on the windbreaker, chattering non-stop, "By the way, where is that stupid zombie?"

The red mutant parrot rolled its eyes, looking for Charlie, and found the stupid zombie with red eyes, continuously ramming into the anti-theft door at the back of the store.

"What is this idiot doing?"

The red mutant parrot shouted loudly, afraid that Li Mu might not see Charlie's foolish actions.

Li Mu's nose twitched, his grayish-white eyes flickering, and he stepped toward Charlie, his black bone spines swinging to whip Charlie away. He raised his right bone knife and, with a swift slash, cut through the iron door.

Li Mu used his left hand to forcefully pull the iron door off the wall.

Bang, bang, bang, continuous gunshots. Li Mu's grayish-white eyes instantly turned silver, and the bullets hung in the air, clattering to the ground.

The red mutant parrot shouted, "Someone!"

Behind the iron door, a girl around twenty years old and a little girl around four or five years old were hugging each other in terror. The woman's gun still had smoke lingering from the barrel.

But the gun in her hand could not give her any sense of security when the bullets strangely hung in front of the terrifying zombie, clattering to the ground.

Annie knew that perhaps today was really the day she and her sister would die.
