Annie had never thought things would turn out this way. She just wanted to help those poor survivors and do what she could, simply because she was human.
Now, even though Li Mu wouldn’t hold her accountable for this, and was even willing to bring those survivors back, shelter them, and provide them with food, Annie felt even more anxious.
If those people knew the truth, that the one sheltering them, Li Mu, was actually a zombie, and even the king of the countless zombies in Melbourne, how terrified and desperate would they be? Would it anger Li Mu and bring them disappointment?
The thought of such an outcome made Annie even more uneasy and anxious. She knew the red mutant parrot was right; she had to do her best to hide the truth, carefully gauge Li Mu’s intentions, and prevent the worst from happening.
"If this is your will, then I can only follow your will. To prevent them from feeling fear, Your Majesty, I hope you can wear gloves and a mask."
Annie spoke softly. She had no choice; even though the black windbreaker concealed most of Li Mu’s unusual features, his right hand, which was a black bone knife, and his sharp fangs would reveal his identity. As for the black bone spike, Annie felt helpless.
Li Mu’s face was expressionless. The black bone spike on his back suddenly twisted, coiling around his thigh and hidden by the long windbreaker. He slowly extended his hands, allowing Annie to put on the leather gloves, concealing the menacing and sharp features. He didn’t wear a mask.
Li Mu only pressed his lips tightly together, hiding his sharp fangs. In this state, it was almost impossible to tell Li Mu apart from a human.
Annie breathed a sigh of relief, knowing that as long as Li Mu didn’t reveal himself, he wouldn’t be discovered. She glanced at the red mutant parrot.
The red mutant parrot snorted, "Woman, I know what you mean. Don’t worry, I’m not as stupid as you."
Annie nodded. Although the red mutant parrot was larger, it wasn’t truly terrifying. As long as it didn’t expose its intelligence and abilities that frightened humans, it wouldn’t arouse suspicion.
Annie’s gaze turned to Charlie. She knew that if anyone was the least likely to pass as human, it was Charlie. Despite showing some human traits compared to other zombies, Charlie was still brutal and terrifying, even to Annie, who dared not let her sister come into contact with Charlie. This made it clear that Charlie could never pass as human.
Charlie could be driven by instinct to attack any human at any time.
Li Mu’s face remained expressionless as he slowly raised his hand. Charlie began to roar, his steps slowly moving, and he opened the door and walked out, his voice gradually fading away.
"Alright, that fool won’t come back without an order. Woman, now go and bring those people back. Don’t worry, all the zombies along the way are under the control of the King."
The red mutant parrot said coldly.
Annie nodded, took a deep breath, and kissed her sister’s forehead. Without looking back, she opened the door and walked out.
Li Mu’s face was expressionless as he slowly walked to the floor-to-ceiling window, watching the sun gradually set, and darkness approaching.
"Your Majesty, I don’t know if your decision is right, but I think choosing humans is not a good decision. After all, whether you admit it or not, you are already a zombie."
The red mutant parrot said.
"I understand your feelings. You are an anomaly in this world, but Your Majesty, I admire a saying: if all of this is really wrong, then the wrong is absolutely not us, but this world."
Li Mu’s face remained expressionless. The red mutant parrot gently landed on his shoulder and fell silent, accompanying Li Mu as he watched Annie carefully walk out of the apartment and into the opposite building. Not long after, she led a group of people, trembling, back to the apartment door.
The door was gently pushed open, and Annie breathed a sigh of relief. Paul and the others immediately filed in, their tense nerves instantly relaxing, and they were overjoyed.
"We escaped, thank God, we escaped."
"Annie, thank you. Thank you for saving us and providing us with food."
"Light, long-awaited light. Oh my God, you actually have electricity, that’s amazing."
"Annie, using the generator like this, are you sure it’s okay? Won’t it attract the zombies…?"
"Gentlemen, please, let’s pause for a moment. Miss Annie, I think the first thing we should do is thank the one who has made all this possible."
Paul saw Li Mu standing by the window as soon as he entered. Even though the black windbreaker concealed Li Mu’s unusual features, his strong figure, standing quietly, was enough to make anyone notice him immediately, like a mountain, as if he were the master of everything.
"This is Mr. Li and his parrot. Mr. Li doesn’t speak English, so everyone should speak Chinese, okay?" Annie took a deep breath and said.
The others nodded, though they didn’t know what skills Mr. Li had to create a safe haven in this zombie-infested world, providing shelter and food, they knew they couldn’t offend him.
Fortunately, for Australians, Chinese is also an official language, so communication wasn’t too difficult.
"Mr. Li, thank you for saving us and providing us with shelter and food. Rest assured, we are not ungrateful people. If there’s anything we can do, just let us know."
Paul said.
Li Mu slowly turned around, his face expressionless, and nodded slightly, glancing at Annie.
"Hungry, hungry."
The red mutant parrot squawked foolishly, glaring at Annie.
Annie immediately reacted, "I understand. Everyone, please sit down and have something to eat first, then we can talk about other things."
"I’ll help too."
One of the women said, seemingly feeling a long-awaited calm from the bright lights in the room, her tone cheerful as she walked into the kitchen with Annie.
Li Mu remained silent, slowly walking to the center of the living room and sitting down. Through the sunglasses, Paul and the others couldn’t gauge Li Mu’s expression.
The atmosphere suddenly turned cold, as if Li Mu’s presence had a chilling effect. For a moment, Paul and the others were too nervous to speak, their hands and feet unsure where to go.
Li Mu raised his hand, and the red mutant parrot immediately flew up, setting up the record player Annie had prepared. The music, like a stream, broke the tense atmosphere, and Paul and the others visibly relaxed.
"Mr. Li, your parrot is so smart. I’ve never seen a red parrot before. I guess it must be a very noble breed."
Paul, with some flattery, opened the conversation, and the others quickly joined in, much to the red mutant parrot’s frustration, who gritted his teeth, wishing he could kill all these damned humans.
"Damn it, you’re the pet, and your whole family is the pet!"
The red mutant parrot cursed in his heart but could feel Li Mu’s mood becoming calm and peaceful in this meaningless conversation.
Li Mu remained silent, but occasionally nodding made Paul and the others feel honored, and the conversation became even more lively.
Annie, who had been anxious, breathed a sigh of relief as the conversation in the living room became more harmonious, her movements becoming lighter, and a smile appeared on her face.
The woman beside her smiled, "You’re lucky to have met Mr. Li so early. Honestly, is there anything between you two…?"
The woman’s lowered voice made Annie speechless, and she quickly shook her head, "How could there be? He… is not that kind of person."
"Then I still have a chance."
The woman giggled, "But, Annie, what do you think of Mr. Li?"
Annie didn’t speak, only speeding up her movements, but in her heart, she couldn’t help but think, if Li Mu weren’t a zombie, how much better it would be, how much better.
