Chapter 5: Diary

【Two】

Wu Zhi rested his head against the glass, looking down at the deserted streets beneath him.

Too quiet, this world was.

Even if the popular, trendy music broadcasted was loud enough to pierce one’s ears, it still could not cover up the loneliness of an uninhabited place. Wu Zhi sighed. He grabbed the crutch and book beside him, no longer giving another look at this saddening, empty city.

Since he returned to reality, he should live on properly for the sake of his family too. His right to seek death was already stripped away by Wu Yuan that day. Wu Zhi always had a stubborn and unyielding character. No matter how hopeless this world was, once he made this decision, he will peacefully live on. His life right now was rather simple. It could even be described as one where he was free to do what he pleased. Without any life goals, and with nothing he needed to do. No need to take college entrance exams. No need to work. He did not even have to worry about clothes, food or where he was staying. The only thing Wu Zhi needed to do was to live on blankly, and kill his own time.

His current life was extremely good. With water and electricity, they did not degress back into primitive society. Ye Qingling was the sort who knew well how to take care of everything. He was the one who found the food, the one who figured out how to get water. In order to fill up his time, Ye Qingling found a rich variety of books and CDs from god knew where — This kind of Ye Qingling was practically Doraemon, capable of giving him anything he wanted.

Wu Zhi thought absent-mindedly as he pressed the elevator button for the sixth floor. Yezhi Hotel was a perfect example of a five-star hotel, with its extremely extravagant facilities. In order to prevent zombie infiltration, Ye Qingling even destroyed the first four floors of Yezhi Hotel. The remaining rooms in the floors were used for a variety of things — on one of the floors, practically all the rooms were shoved with books that Ye Qingling brought back. There were even a few floors stuffed full of food. That terrifying amount gave Wu Zhi no choice but to suspect that “that guy brought over all the food in the entire city”.

The facilities in the hotel were comprehensive, and included even a small movie theater and swimming pool. Wu Zhi found this very ironic. After losing everything, he could enjoy everything. In the past, Wu Zhi could never imagine that he could sleep in a different presidential suite for a whole week without any overlap in suite types; that he could drink himself into a stupor without a care and stay outside all night; that he could fearlessly yell the lyrics out in the karaoke room until he lost his voice; that he could play in the game lounge until crazy. He was free to wear any of the high-fashion clothing in the shops, and could even eat a master chef’s standard of delicacies — Ye Qingling seemed all-capable. He could be a high-ranking chef or an amazing technician. Even before all this, he was even an extremely excellent doctor. When Wu Zhi poured on the praise on his cooking, Ye Qingling only pushed up his glasses and chuckled, explaining this was merely the first result after following the recipe.

The so-called “genius” was someone like this, right? Wu Zhi was always well-aware that Ye Qingling was outstanding. Ye Qingling who had hardly attended class constantly scored an unchanging 84 marks. It did not look remarkable, but Wu Zhi remembered clearly that no matter the examination difficulty, even if the average score in their class was above 90 or below 60, Ye Qingling’s 84 marks always hung there as if it was a matter that concerned no one else, and mocked everyone present. Because Ye Qingling rarely showed up to class, the examinations that he attended were even fewer. But from their accumulated years from elementary school to high school, Wu Zhi finally noticed this oddness. That was Wu Zhi’s first time feeling interest in this person known as Ye Qingling. God was fair. With the price of an unhealthy body, Ye Qingling had received an intelligent mind in exchange. Ye Qingling was a genius. Wu Zhi deeply understood this. So, he had never initiated any scuffle with Ye Qingling. From his perspective, there was only a fine line between a genius and a lunatic.

Fate was an existence that loved playing with humans the most. In the hopeless apocalypse, the once flourishing Yezhi City now only hosted these two, Wu Zhi and Ye Qingling.

Wu Zhi came to the sixth floor. This floor was used to hold the different books and CDs that Ye Qingling brought back. Wu Zhi limped his way to a room and opened the door, his vision instantly filled with a sea of books. Wu Zhi did not suspect just once if Ye Qingling looted a whole library. Supported by the crutch, he placed the books he had read back to their spots, and began blindly looking through the ocean of books.

Father, Swindler, Reader And Leading Role, Miracle Doctor…[1]

Mn? Wu Zhi’s gaze stopped. He took out Miracle Doctor. The last few days, he even spotted Ye Qingling reading this book. Wu Zhi had no particular reason; he was only curious. He had always thought that Ye Qingling and himself were from two different worlds. Even with their stark contrast in personalities, they could still so peacefully stay at the same place together, their understanding of each other was comparable to even brothers born from the same mother.

Wu Zhi flipped through Miracle Doctor. It took him only a few looks before he decided not to let the jargon assault his brain cells. Wu Zhi once again confirmed that he and Ye Qingling did not belong in the same world. He scratched his head, putting Miracle Doctor back into its original spot in disinterest. Then, he paused.

Every shelf was filled with a row of books. Wu Zhi did not expect another book to be hidden behind Miracle Doctor. It was a black leather notebook. Wu Zhi pulled it out and flipped it open. On the first page was Ye Qingling’s name, neatly-written. And above the name was an enlarged word: Diary.

Wu Zhi’s hand trembled. He looked up and around himself, a little guilty.

Ye Qingling was not here today. After every short period of time, Ye Qingling would head out and bring back new supplies. Ye Qingling told him that they were the only ones left in Yezhi City. Every corner of the city was flooded with all kinds of zombies. The roads leading out of the city were already destroyed. There may be other lucky survivors outside, but they had no way of breaking past to the outside world with the layers of zombie groups surrounding them. They could only be trapped in Yezhi City, and then rot along with this Yezhi City.

Wu Zhi had once thought of walking around outside too — even if it was just to step on the streets downstairs. But it was just a thought. Wu Zhi looked at his crippled left leg quietly, unsure of what face he should make. Never mind whether he can escape the zombie assaults if he was outside. In the first place, he didn’t even have the ability to leave this hotel. The first four hotel floors, which Ye Qingling destroyed, not only trapped the zombies downstairs; the people inside were similarly restricted in the hotel. You can only leave the hotel through climbing the walls. Even if Wu Zhi was in peak condition, he may not be able to climb four floors with his wrist strength, much less now, in his current state. But Ye Qingling could do it. After his mutation, not only did his body become increasingly more beautiful, it had become stronger.

The hell. He was just like Rapunzel in the tower, waiting for the prince’s arrival to put down her long hair. Each time Wu Zhi thought this, he felt irritable. The only difference was that Rapunzel was trapped in the tower by a witch, while he was trapped by zombies.

Wu Zhi looked around, and unsurprisingly caught no signs of Ye Qingling. In Ye Qingling’s absence, the enticement of the black leather notebook was magnified hundredfold. Wu Zhi stared at the diary in his hands. The black cover exuded a solemn mysteriousness, and all the more increased the indescribable temptation. Every single person had the desire to pry, especially into others’ secrets. Wu Zhi’s heart felt like it was scratched by a cat. This was Ye Qingling. That Ye Qingling, you know…

Gritting his teeth, Wu Zhi flipped open Ye Qingling’s diary with trembling hands.
