Sunday, sunny, high temperature.
In the city, which felt like a steamer, an old bus moved freely through the streets, stirring up a wave of heat for the pedestrians on the side. Inside the stuffy and simple bus, Kim Yun-ho had been "steamed" for a long time. He wiped the sweat from his forehead with a handkerchief and carefully adjusted the collar of his white shirt by the window. Shin Dong-hae, drenched in sweat, sighed, "Boss, can we not be so frugal? It's the middle of summer, and you're actually taking a bus without air conditioning."
Kim Yun-ho smiled faintly and replied lazily, "A bus with air conditioning costs 1,300 won, while this one without air conditioning is only 800 won, saving 500 won. It's a good deal."
Upon hearing this, Shin Dong-hae's mouth twitched, and he looked defeated, "Damn, Boss, please have some sense. You're going to be a prosecutor, yet you're still haggling over a few hundred won for bus fare."
Kim Yun-ho shook his head and smiled, "500 won, that's the price of a popsicle."
"..." Shin Dong-hae was speechless.
After finishing the case, taking advantage of the last day of the weekend, Kim Yun-ho decided to visit his old home in Guro District. During his internship as a prosecutor, Kim Yun-ho went back to his old home every weekend. If it weren't for the case, he would have gone home on Friday night.
Shin Dong-hae was also going back to his home in Yeongdeungpo District, where he planned to report the good news of his early completion of the internship. It was on the way.
"Phew"
Without guessing, Kim Yun-ho knew it was Shin Dong-hae's fart. He calmly covered his nose and mouth, fanning the air around him, "You're excited again?"
"Hehe... a bit. Thinking about how my family will react to the news..." Shin Dong-hae scratched his head awkwardly.
"Stop it. Don't think about it now. After we get off, you can think about it as much as you want. I mean... you'll be known as 'Fart King' from now on. Whenever you get excited, you can just let it out." Kim Yun-ho leaned away from Shin Dong-hae.
"Boss... that nickname is too much. You can't be so mean to me." Shin Dong-hae whined, refusing to accept the nickname. "And, it's so embarrassing. If my future colleagues or that pretty girl hear it, my image will be ruined."
Shin Dong-hae's explanation was unconvincing, especially when... "Phew"
Alright, the guy just thought about a pretty girl and got excited again.
Kim Yun-ho was very firm, "That's the nickname, no changing it!"
"..." Shin Dong-hae.
He couldn't help it, especially today, when he was in a great mood and easily got excited.
Thus, Shin Dong-hae's nickname, "Fart King," was set.
...
"Ding, Yeongdeungpo District Garden Station. Please prepare to disembark."
Hearing the announcement, Shin Dong-hae perked up, breathing a sigh of relief, "Phew, finally here. Boss, I'm off."
Rushing to the door, he suddenly remembered something, turned around, and shouted to Kim Yun-ho, "Oh, right, I'll take care of the script. Boss, wait for the good news."
Kim Yun-ho smiled and waved, "Okay, take care."
"Cheerio..."
The door closed, and the bus started again.
After passing a six-lane road, the bustling streets and towering buildings outside the window suddenly faded, replaced by old streets and dilapidated buildings.
A road separated the bustling Yeongdeungpo District from the poor Guro District, with a clear distinction between wealth and poverty.
Kim Yun-ho belonged to the latter. He was a resident of Guro District. He, his mother, and his sister had been burdened with the word "poverty" for over a decade!
"Almost there, almost there. Mother, sister, I will take you across this road and become residents on the other side." Kim Yun-ho's hand on the window tightened.
—
Soon, a remarkable young man appeared at the Guro District Garibong Station.
The young man was Kim Yun-ho, a poor boy from Guro District.
Kim Yun-ho carried a handbag over his shoulder and stood there, one hand in his pocket, deeply inhaling the stifling air, savoring the familiar scent.
"Brother!"
A sweet, surprised voice woke Kim Yun-ho.
Turning around, he saw a vibrant young girl waving a popsicle, running excitedly toward him.
"Brother..." The girl, ignoring the heat and sweat, threw herself into Kim Yun-ho's arms, hugging him tightly.
"Hehe, Yun-hee, you're so big now, why are you still acting like a child?" Kim Yun-ho rubbed her little head, his deep eyes filled with affection.
"Brother! No more calling me a child, I've grown up." Yun-hee playfully hit Kim Yun-ho's arm, pouting in dissatisfaction. But it was clearly a childish act.
Kim Yun-ho smiled helplessly and carefully examined his long-lost sister.
Yun-hee was 23 years old, once a little follower, now a beautiful young woman. Although her looks didn't match the refined beauty of celebrities, she had a stunning presence!
If a single word had to describe her, it would be "first love"!
Her face still had a hint of baby fat, making one want to pinch it. Her thick, neatly arched eyebrows, similar to Kim Yun-ho's, added a touch of spirit. Her almond-shaped eyes were clear, fresh, and bright, giving one the urge to explore her thoughts.
Her nose, like Kim Yun-ho's, was straight and elegant. Her "girl's lips" were pink and small, with a slight upward curve, giving an impression of optimism and cheerfulness. When she opened her mouth, her two small, white canine teeth added to her cuteness.
Pink canvas shoes, washed-out jeans, and a white T-shirt. Like Kim Yun-ho, she wore no accessories. Although she lacked the fashionable flair of Seoul girls, it only enhanced her purity, like a clear spring.
At that moment, her sweet face, with a mix of shyness and anger, was incredibly adorable.
"Hehe, okay, okay. By the way, didn't I tell you not to always come to pick me up? I know the way." Kim Yun-ho rubbed Yun-hee's head and laughed.
Yun-hee smiled but didn't speak. She skipped, chin slightly raised, like a beautiful peacock showing off, attracting many passersby's attention.
Kim Yun-ho knew she was showing off her beauty. At 23, she was in the prime of her life and very conscious of her appearance.
The canvas shoes, washed-out jeans, and white T-shirt she wore were her best outfit. These "expensive" clothes were a birthday gift from Kim Yun-ho after he started working, costing a total of 50,000 won, equivalent to a night's stay in a regular Seoul hotel.
Yun-hee cherished this outfit, not wearing it at home and having no chance to wear it outside. Only by using the excuse of picking up Kim Yun-ho every week could she wear it to "show off."
Kim Yun-ho didn't understand women, but he understood his sister. For a girl who had no decent clothes for over 20 years, suddenly having a decent outfit made her want to show it off.
It was very real, and Kim Yun-ho felt a pang of sadness.
"Yun-hee, my internship is over. I might become a prosecutor next week." He said it as if he were boasting.
"Really? Oh! Brother, why didn't you tell me this good news earlier?" Yun-hee's eyes widened, and she jumped onto Kim Yun-ho's back, refusing to let go.
"Hehe, of course it's true. I wanted to surprise you and Mom. After I'm officially hired, my salary will increase a lot. Then I can buy you pretty clothes, and Mom won't have to work so hard." Kim Yun-ho held Yun-hee, feeling the heat of her body in the summer, but his heart was cool and happy.
"Hehe! Brother, you're so amazing." Yun-hee, hanging on his back, combed her sticky hair and then "produced" a popsicle, offering it to Kim Yun-ho with pride, "Here, as a reward for promising to buy me clothes."
Seeing the half-melted popsicle, Kim Yun-ho's steps paused, and memories flooded his mind.
Years ago, during the summer, whenever Yun-hee was particularly happy or sad, he would secretly spend 500 won to buy her a popsicle without telling their mother.
A three-section popsicle, Yun-hee would eat one section first, then insist he eat the next. But after eating one section, he would always pretend to have a stomachache and leave the last section for Yun-hee.
A cheap popsicle that cost only 500 won carried deep affection and precious childhood memories for the siblings.
500 won, the difference between an air-conditioned bus and a non-air-conditioned one, was negligible to the rich and even to ordinary people like Shin Dong-hae. But to Kim Yun-ho and his sister, it was a precious memory and a rare moment of happiness.
Kim Yun-ho shook his head, dispelling his thoughts, and smiled, taking a bite of the popsicle. It was sweet! The cold sugar water refreshed him, dispelling all the heat around him.
"Ah, my stomach can't handle cold things. Here, the rest is yours." Kim Yun-ho made a pained expression and "threw" the remaining section of the popsicle to Yun-hee.
"Hehe, you can't enjoy good things, so I'll take them." Yun-hee ate the popsicle in small bites, her face beaming with joy.
Although they had grown up, the childhood scenes reappeared, and everything was so beautiful and pleasant!
This feeling was wonderful!
At that moment, Kim Yun-ho felt as if he were living in paradise!
He laughed from the heart, two faint dimples appearing at the corners of his mouth.
