Chapter 14

6 min read1,476 words

The Ninth Elder District is the poorest area in Seoul. In 1988, to beautify Seoul for the Olympics, the government relocated all the city's poor to this area. Although the district covers 30 hectares and is separated from the prosperous Gangnam area by only a six-lane highway, it is completely overshadowed by the prosperity of the other districts. Most of the residents here work as laborers or day laborers, and many survive by scavenging.

Gari Peak is the largest and poorest neighborhood in the Ninth Elder District, home to tens of thousands of Chinese and an equal number of Koreans.

Jin Yunho's home is on the hillside of Gari Peak in the Ninth Elder District, a 90-square-meter bungalow. The first floor is a restaurant that mainly serves jajangmyeon, and the second floor is a 60-square-meter attic where Jin Yunho, his mother, and his sister live.

When Jin Yunho returned home, he casually looked up and noticed that the sign at the entrance, weathered by over a decade of wind and rain, had faded to the point where only the rusted characters "Jajangmyeon Restaurant" remained, hanging there dryly.

Standing outside, he could smell the familiar, mixed aroma of meat and sauce from the jajangmyeon broth, a scent that had accompanied him for over a decade.

"Creak"

Jin Yunho slowly opened the door, and Jin Yunxi, who was behind him, called out loudly, "Mom, we're back!"

Every time the sentimental and nostalgic atmosphere was disrupted by this girl, it was truly helpless.

Jin Yunho shook his head and said helplessly, "Mom, I'm back."

Immediately, a series of hurried footsteps came, and a middle-aged woman with a weathered face ran out from the kitchen.

The middle-aged woman came to Jin Yunho, her face filled with excitement, and reached out to touch his cheek. But noticing the flour on her hands, she quickly pulled them back.

Jin Yunho put down his bag, stepped forward, and gave a deep, heartfelt hug to the middle-aged woman, his voice choked with emotion, "Mom."

The middle-aged woman, named Zheng Daqin, was the woman who had raised Jin Yunho and Jin Yunxi alone, a great and respectable mother.

"Hey, you're so big now, let go, don't get your clothes dirty," Zheng Daqin said, gently scolding as she pulled away from Jin Yunho's embrace. In her eyes, Jin Yunho's ordinary pants and white shirt were decent attire, and it would be a pity if they got dirty.

She wiped her hands on her apron and then took Jin Yunho's arm, saying, "Go wash your hands and get ready for dinner. The dishes are all prepared, and I'm making your favorite jajangmyeon, it'll be ready soon."

"I want three large bowls," Jin Yunho said, holding up three fingers and smiling. As always, he responded to his mother's affection in this way.

Zheng Daqin's face, lined with wrinkles, suddenly broke into a smile, and she said with a grin, "Okay, okay."

"Mom, I want two large bowls too, you have to make more," Jin Yunxi pouted, feeling left out as her mother's eyes were only on her brother.

"Brat, you usually don't even want to eat jajangmyeon, why are you suddenly changing your mind?" Zheng Daqin put on a stern face, slapped Jin Yunxi, and nagged.

"Hmph, eating jajangmyeon alone is boring, it's more fun to eat with my brother," Jin Yunxi hid behind Jin Yunho, sticking out her head and continued to argue, "And who made you so biased? Every time my brother comes back, you make so many good dishes, and only when he comes back can I eat well."

"Oh, you're talking back to me," Zheng Daqin pretended to be angry, raised her hand, and threatened to discipline Jin Yunxi.

"Hey, brother, save me!" Jin Yunxi hid behind Jin Yunho, shouting. As always, whenever she made a mistake, she would hide behind her brother for protection.

"Ha ha, okay, Mom, you go make the jajangmyeon, I'm hungry," Jin Yunho caught Zheng Daqin's raised hand and consoled her.

"I know, you always protect your sister, I don't know what you'll spoil her into," Zheng Daqin reluctantly let go, dragging out her words.

"Ha ha, I promise to discipline her later," Jin Yunho half-hugged Zheng Daqin, pushed her back to the kitchen, and then flicked Jin Yunxi's forehead, instructing, "Go, help Mom set the table."

"Hee hee, as you wish, big brother," Jin Yunxi made a funny face and laughed.

Seeing the tension between her mother and sister just a moment ago, now they were discussing the saltiness of the dishes together, Jin Yunho smiled and shook his head. Every time he came back, the house was always noisy, but it felt incredibly real and warm.

The poor life had made Zheng Daqin and Jin Yunxi work hard, and in no time, a sumptuous lunch was prepared.

Kung Pao chicken, sweet and sour ribs, three fresh vegetables, braised carp, doenjang soup, and a few side dishes of kimchi, all of which Jin Yunho liked. Gari Peak had many Chinese, and Zheng Daqin's Chinese cooking skills were learned from a Chinese aunt.

Jin Yunho loved Chinese food, and every week when he came back, Zheng Daqin would make him one or two dishes. But today's lunch was a bit too lavish.

During the meal, Jin Yunho was quite surprised, "Why did you make so many good dishes today?"

Zheng Daqin remained silent, busy serving Jin Yunxi. Jin Yunxi, on the side, was gnawing on a rib, several times wanting to speak but holding back.

Jin Yunho, who had been a detective for ten years in his previous life and had been exposed to legal knowledge from a young age, saw through his sister's unusual behavior easily.

He moved the sweet and sour ribs in front of him, looking provocatively at Jin Yunxi, his eyes clearly conveying: if you don't tell me, I won't let you eat the ribs.

Jin Yunxi, biting her chopsticks, glared angrily at the tempting ribs, and finally, under Jin Yunho's gaze, gave in, muttering, "It's all because of Mom, she arranged a blind date for you, afraid you wouldn't agree, so she made a sumptuous meal to bribe you in advance."

"Cough... cough." Jin Yunho choked, almost spitting out the doenjang soup.

A blind date? Bribe me? His own mother was really something.

Jin Yunho wiped his mouth, shaking his head and smiling bitterly.

Zheng Daqin, feeling a bit embarrassed, glared at Jin Yunxi, "Brat, is it really that exaggerated? My own son, do I need to bribe him?"

She turned around and put on a 'stubborn' face, "I don't care, I already agreed, you have to go meet her this afternoon."

Well! Seeing his mother resort to such 'stubborn' tactics, Jin Yunho had nothing to say. He could only smile bitterly and nod in agreement.

"Okay, I'll go. But at least I should know who the person is. Mom, you didn't arrange for me to meet the daughter of a fish vendor at the market, did you?" Jin Yunho teased.

"Ha ha" Jin Yunxi covered her mouth, her shoulders shaking with laughter.

Zheng Daqin's eyes widened, her face full of shock, as if to say, "How did you guess?"

Jin Yunho was devastated.

Damn! The person isn't really the daughter of a fish vendor at the market, is she?

He had no intention of looking down on the poor; he himself was poor and had no right to look down on others.

But he had his own aspirations, his own yearning for a bourgeois lifestyle, and he had high standards for his life.

That's why he studied hard and worked to become a well-paid prosecutor, wanting to change his current impoverished fate and lead his family to a better life, and to have the means to find a suitable partner.

A noble, elegant, mature, and sophisticated woman was his type.

He really couldn't imagine living with a woman who spent her days wielding a knife and gutting fish. They would have no common ground.

Even though a blind date doesn't mean marriage, if he had no intention from the start, going through with it would be like playing with the other person.

Jin Yunho didn't want to waste his time on such a low-level thing.

"Mom, I'm a prosecutor in South Korea now, and I might officially start next week. If my colleagues find out I went on a blind date with the daughter of a fish vendor at the market, they'll laugh at me."

Unable to find a way out, Jin Yunho tried to婉转地推掉这场莫名其妙的相亲安排。
