Chapter 1- Oh Kindergarten, my kindergarten
“Teacher Tian, I leave this child in your care then.”
Mother Hong tightly grasped the kindergarten teacher’s hand and repeatedly thanked him. Teacher Tian had a face full of awkwardness, but quickly nodded as he looked around at the group of evil faced colleagues surrounding him.
“Don’t worry, ma’am. She’s in good hands.”
Finishing his sentence, he uncomfortably avoided Mother Hong’s grateful expression and looked down at the girl beside her. His expression brightened. A fair and tender face combined with startling amber eyes looked back at her. Her shoulder-length hair curved softly around her head and that blue dress with tiny teddy bear print on them was just too cute on her. The teacher bent down and gently patted the girl’s hair and asked,
“Hello, what’s your name?”
Shuaaa-
A chilly wind blew by as the little girl looked up at the teacher with a cold and indifferent expression. She pursed her lips but didn’t speak. Her posture seemed to say, ‘If you keep asking me I am going to string you up like a duck and sell you off.’[1] Teacher Tian smiled awkwardly and shook his head. He grabbed the little girl’s hand and led her into the class while muttering under his breath about how such a coquettish looking mother gave birth to such a stuffy little kid.
As soon as he entered the classroom, the teacher clapped his hands to get the attention of the kids who were currently making a mess during their recess and shouted,
“Everyone, quiet down, we have a new classmate today.”
For a long time, the only response he got was laughter. Teacher Tian sighed helplessly. Maybe it’s because he is a new teacher, or maybe it’s because these kids are too mature to bother listening to him….but he can’t just keep acting like a pushover. He is a fully grown adult, yet he can’t even handle a bunch of brats as easily as he should have. I really want to cry /(ㄒoㄒ)/~~. Ugh, forget it. In the end, he wasn’t able to cry and sighed. He then waved in a faltering manner at a girl wearing a large grin on her face,
“Tong Tong, come here~”
Tong Tong looked up at the teacher and pulled up her tights, which half of her butt was falling out of, with her pudgy hands, and asked,
“What do you want? I’m busy!”
That childish voice seemed to carry a hint of tender silkiness to it and it ended up startling the quiet little girl beside Teacher Tian. She looked up and unexpectedly, the little girl called Tong Tong also looked back with bright eyes. Although Tong Tong looked quite silly with her hand in her mouth and sucking on it, she sighed contentedly in her heart.
She’s really pretty, almost half as beautiful as me!
“Tong Tong, this is your new classmate. Please help me introduce her to everyone~”
Teacher Tian had on a flattering expression as she looked at the girl in front of her. His heart felt even more bitter, since they were not afraid of bullying him, this soft persimmon, then he will pick out a hard persimmon to deal with them! [2]
“Then…..I want an extra serving of chocolate milk for lunch!”
Tong Tong did not even need to think before directly stating her conditions. Teacher Tian only sighed and nodded in agreement. The little girl beside him felt a little surprised. If even the teacher can’t deal with the group of kids, then how can this person in front of her do so? However, what happened next completely shocked the little girl. She watched as Tong Tong inhaled deeply, covering her belly before she roared with great strength,
“Everyone who doesn’t want to get beaten up, shut up!”
The children who were happily playing just a moment ago instantly stopped moving. They turned their heads and looked at Tong Tong with terrified expressions. Only one little boy was still moving and he ignored Tong Tong as he played with the duckling toy in his hand. Tong Tong quickly grew furious and stomped towards the boy. She snatched the toy out of the little boy’s hands and slammed it on the ground with a violent throw. Still waving his arm in the air, the little boy watched as his duck was smashed into oblivion by the small meat bun in front of him.
“Waaa-”
“Cry, you still dare to cry? Pipi, how many times have I told you already? Yet you still dare to not listen to me!”
After saying so, the boy called Pipi had his butt kicked hard by Tong Tong. As expected, his crying immediately stopped after that. Pipi clutched his butt as he gazed timidly at Tong Tong.
Teacher Tian watched dumbfounded at the scene in front of him and was about to say something when Tong Tong walked towards them and pointed at the little girl beside him,
“What’s your name?”
The little girl still wore an indifferent expression as she looked at her, but now there was a little fear in her eyes.
“Well-”
In the next moment, the little girl’s right cheek was stretched out as Tong Tong scolded her,
“I asked you what your name is!”
“Hong Ershao….” [3]
A soft voice came out of the little girl’s mouth and suddenly the room started laughing. Tong Tong also couldn’t stop laughing as she let go of the hand holding her cheek and asked,
“You don’t have a penis, so why are you called that?”
Hong Ershao raised her right hand to rub her face and looked at Tong Tong in trepidation,
“Because….because mom and dad always wanted a boy, so….”
Teacher Tian only sighed and said no more as he waved his hand and walked out the door,
“Tong Tong, play nice and don’t bully your new classmate~”
Tong Tong nodded vigorously at his words. On that day, Hong Ershao would spend a day that she would never forget in her entire life. Her white, teddy bear print dress would be almost torn by Tong Tong and her face would be painted on until it looked like a monkey’s butt. Her sausage and milk for lunch also ended up in Tong Tong’s mouth and even the new quilt Mother Hong had made for her was stolen from her during the afternoon nap.
Hong Ershao laid in the small bed, curled up into a ball as she watched Tong Tong continue to play around. She watched as Tong Tong was still using the same red marker that she used earlier to draw something on her lips. Her lips felt itchy and Hong Ershao turned her head away and tried to hide, but her head was quickly pulled back again.
“Why are you hiding? I’m putting on makeup for you! My mother draws it like this and afterward, you won’t feel inferior anymore! When I’m done with you, even if you’re called Ershao, you’ll be as beautiful as a moth!”
“You mean a butterfly….”
Ershao protested weakly and she received a violent shove in response.
After finishing her lips, Tong Tong studied Ershao and then took out a black marker and drew on her eyelids, After playing around for half an hour, she nodded in satisfaction and patted Ershao’s face with a smile,
“Turns out, when my mother said I had the talent to be a genius artist, she really wasn’t lying!”
Pipi, who was sleeping beside them, heard them talking and sleepily sat up in his bed. Hong Ershao and Tong Tong both turned around to look at him at the same time. When Pipi saw Hong Ershao’s face, he fell off his bed and screamed while waving his hands wildly and crying,
“Mama, there’s a ghost!”
The caretaker guarding the door heard the scream and ran in. Seeing the Zhu Bajie [4] eyes and fiery red lips on Hong Ershao’s face, she sighed and said,
“Tong Tong, this auntie is begging you, please don’t bully the children, okay?”
“Okay, auntie, I accept your request.”
“…”
After a while, the footsteps walked farther away and Hong Ershao felt her bed dip as she felt something else had squeezed into her nest. Looking down, she saw Tong Tong looking up at her with her cute face as she said sweetly,
“Your bed looks more comfortable than mine. Oh, Ershao, I forgot to tell you, my name is Zitong. Oh, and I like you very much~”
Inexplicably, little Hong Ershao felt her heart lighten and all her previous grievance and unpleasantness from before seemed to wash away as she looked down shyly at Zitong,
“Actually, I like you too. You look pretty.”
Zitong smiled happily and grinned as she said,
“Then is this what the TV once called, ‘to make a secret pledge to be together without parent’s approval’? Then…tomorrow, can you bring in some teddy bear crackers for me? They’re really tasty~” [5]
“….”
T/N notes:
[1] This phrase could also be roughly interpreted as “I’m going to sell your body” or “pimp you off like a prostitute” because the phrase for ‘duck’ also means (male) prostitute in Chinese slang. However, seeing as the girl is supposed to be like 5, I’m going ahead with a more innocent version.
[2] soft persimmon: to say someone is a soft persimmon is to say that they are a pushover.
[3] Hong Ershao: generally a name reserved for males because the characters ‘Ershao’ also means ‘young master’
[4] Zhu Bajie: A character in “Journey to the West” he is a pig-like character that is kind of like the comedy relief (in my opinion)
[5] to make a pledge to be married, without parents’ approval (私定终生): sounds better in mandarin, but essentially means, in my terms, “I promise to be with you forever but it’s a secret.”
*Note: Elementary school in China begins at “Grade 1” so kindergarten is not counted as part of the elementary school. And furthermore, the words 幼儿园 could also mean Pre-school, but I’m going to stick with kindergarten for now.
Ok people, I need your opinion. In Chinese, your name might be something like Wang Wei so then people who are close to you (or if you are a child) will call you by a nickname by repeating your name twice. In Wang Wei’s case, it would be Weiwei. It’s the same with Tongtong but it’s four letters instead of three so I want to ask you guys, which one looks more pleasing to the eyes? Choose one, please!
