Song Wen found a dark corridor in front of him. He walked forward, stumbling on his feet. There was the sound of dense rain outside, mixed with thunder and lightning. At the end of the corridor was a half-open iron door, the warm orange light spilling out from inside the room. He could smell a very foul odor coming from the door, the kind of rotting fish smell that sat in the farmers market for a long time, mixed with the musty smell of the old basement. It was disgusting and he could not breathe. There was something rotting in this dark basement.

Song Wen stood at the door hesitating, not knowing if he should go in or not. He put his hand on the door handle and somehow, the door opened silently.

With the help of the light, he first saw the blood on the ground; dried sticky dark red blood, and then he saw people lying on the ground inside.

It was more than one person.

Those people were different from what he usually sees- they were not moving, not breathing, there was no heartbeat, and some were even decayed – dead people.

Among those bodies was a female corpse with long hair, wearing a white sarong. The beautiful body had decayed and was accompanied by maggots.

If it were in normal times, Song Wen would never blink when he saw this kind of sight, but in his dreams, that kind of visceral fear was completely out of his physical control.

Song Wen froze in place. His feet refused to cooperate, and his body broke out in cold sweat. He felt as if a pair of hands were tightly holding his neck, he wanted to scream but couldn’t. Thousands of ghosts were screaming in his ears, and at that moment, his soul was also dragged into hell.

In that extremely painful feeling, there was a crisp voice calling him, trying to pull him out. When Song Wen reacted, it was his cell phone ringtone.

It was a phone call that interrupted his dream.

Song Wen opened his eyes and gasped for air. He felt his heart racing in his chest, going 100 miles a minute. It was almost summer, but his whole body was chilled to the bone. The scene in the dream was extremely vivid. When he closes his eyes, he can see the orange glow. He has dreamed of this scene more than once, always the same yellow light and the blood on the ground. He had recurring nightmares about the scene he saw that the day, but almost every time, it was cut off there.

The phone rang for a few times before he pressed the answer button. Song Wen asked, “Hello?”

On the other side of the phone was Xiao Wang, who was on duty. His voice was anxious, and fired off his report like an artillery: “Captain Song, something has happened here. You have been appointed by Chief Gu to take charge. The exact location is…”

Song Wen felt that he was still trapped in a nightmare. He tried to wake himself up, rubbing his forehead and asked with a dumb voice, “What case and where?”

Xiao Wang then organized his thoughts: “There are at least two homicide cases. It was a college student who died. The place is in Chengdong University Town, South City University’s female dormitory.”

“What do you mean by at least two?” Song Wen caught the key word.

“It means there are other people being rescued.”

“The cause of death?”

“It seems to be poisoning……”

Multiple people poisoned on a college campus? Two people died?

This level can definitely be considered a big case.

After hearing these words, Song Wen woke up with a jolt. He sat up from the bed, then looked down at the cartoon pajama pants he was wearing. Feeling like he was cursed, he let out a swear, “Fuck!”

On the other side of the phone, Xiao Wang was taken aback.

Song Wen said urgently: “I’m sorry, I didn’t say it to you. Help me notify Lu Siyu and Fu Linjiang, and have them head over to the scene. Old Jia and Zhu Xiao will be on standby at the police station to coordinate tasks. I will go over immediately.”

He hung up the phone and got up from the bed. After looking at the time on the phone, it was a little before one o’clock in the morning, it was the most ripe time for people to sleep. Song Wen used cold water to wash up briefly, then he went back and started banging on the door of the guest room.

Old Mrs. Song got up sleepily, opened the door and asked, “What? Going out on a police operation?” As a family member of a police inspector for many years, she has long been familiar with this battle. Those crime scenes and criminals never choose a good time.

Song Wen nodded his head and asked urgently, “Mom, where are my pants?”

Old Mrs. Song pointed to the balcony: “I just tidied your closet today, I already washed them all… Once they are left to dry overnight, they will be mostly dry tomorrow morning.”

Song Wen looked out the window, staring at the row of pants on the balcony from long to short, like a flag fluttering with the night wind.

His first reaction was to remember that he had not worn the police pants for a long time. Then he remembered that he last wore them after receiving the annual award, then he left them at the bureau.

Song Wen was a little bit eager to cry without tears: “At least leave me one pair ah, what do you expect me to wear now?”

“Then wait here.” Old Mrs. Song went back to her room and a few seconds later, tossed out a pair of floral loose nine-quarter pants; the kind worn for dancing at a plaza, and handed them to Song Wen: “Why don’t you make do with these first? This style does not distinguish between men and women.”

“……” Song Wen did not have the heart to reach out and take them.

Old Mrs. Song shook the pants again: “This one, your pajama pants, and not-dry jeans, choose one.”

Song Wen was a little depressed. He is, at least, a handsome and dashing captain of the criminal police department.

Seeing Song Wen’s embarrassment, Old Mrs. Song said with a scowl, “Who told you not to find a wife? Who was this someone who forgot to take care of it, and still needs their mother to come all the way here to help you wash clothes?”

Song Wen found that for his mother, everything can be tied back to his lack of marriage, as long as she wants.

In the middle of the night, the police must arrive at the scene of the crime in time. Song Wen took out his cell phone to look at the time, and looked down at his pajama pants. Grinding his teeth, he took the trousers from the old lady’s hand, took off his pajamas and put them on. The pants were tight around the waist and hips, loose around the legs; the original nine points, now became seven points hanging on the legs.

Old Mrs. Song closed her eyes and spewed out a few compliments to encourage him: “Quite suitable. Looks like you have very long legs. Go now, don’t delay the official business.”

Song Wen couldn’t care less. He put on a coat, and placed the police officer’s badge in his pocket. He then turned around, changed into a pair of tourist shoes and went out.

It was dark outside, and the whole city seemed to be asleep. Not to mention the lack of people on the main road, there was not even a single ghost out. Song Wen opened the taxi-hailing app and tried to hail a car for a minute without any success. So he simply took a shared bicycle and got on the road. In the middle of the night, the road was empty, and he rode frantically like a madman; he rode the shared bicycle at a speed of 70 miles per hour. Twenty minutes later, Song Wen arrived at South City University in a breathless manner. When he paddled into the school, the security guard thought he was a student and didn’t even bother to stop him.

Song Wen rode in without stopping, paused for a moment and considering that he did not know the way; he turned around again, then asked the security guard at the gate, “Where is the girls’ dormitory?”

The security guard looked at Song Wen, then looked at the flowered pants he was wearing, and hesitated.

Song Wen knew that the guard was treating him as a pervert. He took out his police officer’s badge to prove his innocence and said: “I am a police officer.”

The security guard double checked Song Wen’s photo and was convinced of his identity, knowing that Song Wen was here for the incident in the girls’ dormitory: “I’ve received a notice about it, I’ll take you there.”

As he was speaking, an ambulance drove out of the gate and onto the road, because there was no traffic at night, the sirens were not turned on. The security guard looked at the moving ambulance, shook his head and sighed: “That incident is tragic. Too terrible. I heard that it was a senior student who was going to graduate within a few months, but she died out here.”

South City University was a comprehensive university having been opened for thirty eight years so far. It was the highest institution of learning in South City, with more than nine thousand students enrolled throughout the university, which were divided into eight colleges, and a faculty team of more than seven hundred.

With so many people gathered in the school, it was impossible to have no accidents at all.

"

"

Every school has a quota of student deaths every year, people who jumped off the building and committed suicide. This is a number that is not reported to the public.. As long as they were within the quota, if the incidents were properly handled without social repercussions, and the families were well settled, nothing will happen. If the quota is exceeded, the leaders will be held accountable. South City University has been considered smooth and stable, with no major incidents happening prior; but this accident is a big deal. This kind of vicious incident, I’m afraid the ripple effect is not small.

The security guard took Song Wen all the way to the first floor of the girls’ dormitory. Song Wen raised his head and saw the shadows of people wavering by the window upstairs, and he could feel them gazing down at him. The structure of this building was quite simple, the dark side was a row of corridors, the bright side were various rooms. The room in question was on the first floor, not far from the entrance to the building. At this time, the janitor has exceptionally switched on the electric switch and the whole dormitory building was lit up.

In order to protect the scene of the crime and prevent the students from panicking, all of the students were explicitly told to stay in the dormitory building and not go out, and even the windows must be closed.

With such a big incident having occurred, tonight was destined to be a sleepless night. Naturally, the principal was alerted, and all the janitors and teachers who could be mobilized were all called up; some to maintain order, others to calm the students. These girls were originally students living in the ivory tower*, they have never seen such battles occured before.

(T/N: 象牙塔 : xiàngyátǎ = Ivory tower, to live far away from dark side side of the society)

With trepidation, anxiety, fear, as well as a bit of gossip and curiosity, the campus internet and some class group chats had exploded. Everyone was speculating about what was going on.

The entire dormitory building had been sealed off by the police, and several police cars were parked downstairs; one of which was Lin Xiuran’s, and Song Wen knew his team had arrived.

Walking towards the scene of the crime, the accident was in dormitory 108, at the end of this corridor. At this time, the door outside has been sealed by a yellow police cordon tape.

The criminal police on duty, the cops and the forensic doctor all had arrived. When they saw him walking over, they greeted him.

Lin Xiuran was standing outside the door, he was about to give an account to Song Wen. When he looked down, the first thing he saw were Song Wen’s pants. He was shocked by the style and asked in a low voice, “Why did you come wearing these things?”

Song Wen gritted his teeth and said, “My mother had washed all my pants, better to come wearing these than to not wear anything at all.” He suddenly thought of what Zhou Yining said before, don’t push yourself and your colleagues too hard.

Today’s outfit was unexpectedly down-to-earth.

Lin Xiuran was so attracted to the color that he couldn’t move his eyes, “I thought that you got dressed in the dark, and wore the pants of your girlfriend by mistake.”

“Then my girlfriend’s taste is bad as hell.” Song Wen waved his hand and said, “Stop talking nonsense and let’s quickly review the case.”

Lin Xiuran pointed to Bai Xiaoxiao and Deng Jia, who were sitting in the corridor talking to the two police officers on duty: “Those two were the ones who found the victims. They called the security guard and the housekeeper aunt called the police. The emergency response team came a little after 1 a.m.”

“What’s the specific process?” Song Wen frowned slightly as he spoke. He saw the two girls who were pale and dressed in their coats. Evidently scared and uncertain about what was happening around them.

“They live in dormitory 107, and the accident was next door, dormitory 108. A victim ran to their door and called for help, waking them up. The security guards opened the dormitory and found three other victims. Two of them were dead and one was unconscious. One of them was not deeply poisoned and was conscious. At present, the two who still had vital signs were taken to the hospital for rescue.”

As he spoke, Lin Xiuran lifted the yellow blockade and ushered Song Wen into the dormitory behind him. The first scene of the crime.
