The Indian uncle spoke with excitement, but Wang Peng was stunned. The Indian uncle's words mainly affirmed the existence of superpowers, suggesting that the next step in human evolution would bring about these abilities. He even said that some people in the world were already at the forefront of this evolution, meaning that some ordinary people might possess superpowers.
In an instant, Wang Peng thought of himself. Didn't he have superpowers?
"Sorry, I got carried away. But you seem to know a lot, not like other ordinary high school students. Do you plan to develop in the field of genetics?" After realizing he had gotten too excited, the Indian uncle apologized.
"Um, it's okay, I'm just a bit more interested in genetics." Wang Peng, regaining his composure, answered somewhat awkwardly. He couldn't tell the Indian uncle that he was actually an archaeology doctor and was just attending high school for fun.
At this moment, the Indian uncle reached into his bag and pulled out a very thick book, handing it to Wang Peng. "This is for you."
"Huh? What is this?" Wang Peng took the book, puzzled, and then looked at the pages. He found it was a book about genetics. When he saw the cover, he suddenly noticed a very familiar symbol.
The symbol on the cover was a slender 'S' shape, with a short line in the indented part above and two short lines in the indented part below.
The more Wang Peng looked at the symbol, the more familiar it seemed. Suddenly, a flash of insight came to him. He remembered where he had seen this symbol before. It was in the archaeological materials sent by his Egyptian colleague, on a photo of the tomb wall at the excavation site. The symbols were almost identical.
"Hey, what's wrong?" The Indian uncle, seeing Wang Peng staring at the cover in surprise, called out to him, puzzled.
"Ah? Oh!" Wang Peng came to his senses, feeling a bit awkward. He flipped through the book and, when he saw the author's photo and introduction on the back cover, his eyes widened in surprise.
"Is... is this... Uncle, is this you!?" Wang Peng looked at the author's photo on the back cover, then at the Indian uncle driving the car, back and forth several times, unable to believe it.
"Hehe, didn't expect that, did you?" The Indian uncle smiled, seeing Wang Peng's surprised expression.
"Are you a genetics doctor? Why are you driving a taxi here?" Wang Peng asked, disbelieving.
This book on genetics was written by the Indian uncle, and the introduction on the back cover mentioned that he was a genetics doctor with a long and distinguished career.
But why would a genetics doctor not be teaching at a university or working in a lab, and instead be driving a taxi?
"Ah! I am a genetics doctor in India, but... in New York, I'm just a taxi driver." The Indian uncle sighed and smiled bitterly at Wang Peng's incredulous tone.
"I see." Wang Peng nodded, understanding the situation. Different countries have different standards. As the Indian uncle said, he was a genetics doctor in India, but his academic credentials were not recognized in the United States, so he could only drive a taxi. It's like a driver's license; it's easy to get one in the U.S., but it's much harder in China, and a U.S. license is not valid in China.
Wang Peng flipped through the book, and his brows furrowed. He began to understand why the Indian uncle, a genetics doctor, was not recognized.
Each doctor has their own area of expertise, and there are many different fields. The Indian uncle's research focused on the theory he had just mentioned with excitement: the possibility of superpowers in ordinary people. This kind of research would not be accepted by normal people. If he said this in China, he would be considered a late-stage otaku.
This theory would not be recognized in any country. The Indian uncle might have some reputation in India, but in a city like New York, no one would pay attention.
"Uncle, you must have known this would happen in New York. Why did you come here?" Wang Peng asked, puzzled, wondering why the Indian uncle would leave his comfortable life as a professor in India to suffer as a taxi driver in New York.
"For my research theory, I'm close to discovering, no! I have already discovered those people, those with hidden abilities in the crowd. They are likely aware of their powers and are very anxious. They need my help." The Indian uncle said, his expression very serious.
Wang Peng felt a deep respect for the Indian uncle. This was a true scholar, willing to give up a comfortable life to come to a foreign city and do such a tiring and difficult job for the sake of his research.
"Uncle, you are a true scholar. I believe in your theory; you are right." Wang Peng said solemnly to the Indian uncle.
The Indian uncle's theory was very correct because Wang Peng himself was part of this theory, one of the people with superpowers. However, Wang Peng couldn't reveal his own superpowers because the risks were too great. He didn't want to be dissected or studied.
"Uncle, this is my business card. If you need any help in the future, please don't hesitate to call me. I will do my best to assist you." Wang Peng took out his business card and handed it to the Indian uncle.
"You have a business card? Hmm? You are an archaeology doctor!?" The Indian uncle was surprised when Wang Peng handed him the card. He wondered if high school students now had their own business cards. Then, seeing the information on the card, he exclaimed in surprise.
"Um." Seeing the Indian uncle's surprised expression, Wang Peng rubbed his nose, feeling a bit embarrassed and a little proud, and nodded.
"Peng Wang... Oh! I remember, I read about you a few years ago. You got your doctorate at the age of twelve, and your thesis was excellent. I didn't expect to meet you here." The Indian uncle looked at Wang Peng's name on the card, recalling who he was, and said with a sigh.
"It's okay. I was very interested, and before I knew it, I became a doctor. But recently, I've been working too hard. The doctor said I was overworked, and my parents decided to give me a long leave and enroll me in high school. Sigh!" Wang Peng sighed, feeling helpless.
"Ha ha, you should understand your parents' concern. Health is the most important. Sending an archaeology doctor to high school is probably to help you relax. By the way, my son is also a doctor, but not in archaeology. He is a genetics doctor like me, though not as young as you." The Indian uncle smiled, his voice full of pride when he mentioned his son.
Wang Peng chatted with the Indian uncle for a while, and the taxi arrived at the airport.
"Uncle, I'll go first. Remember to call me if you need anything. I have nothing to do for a while, so I'll be available whenever you need me." Wang Peng, seeing they had arrived at the airport, said to the Indian uncle.
"Okay, if there's a chance, I'll introduce my son to you. You two should have a lot to talk about. His name is Mohinder." The Indian uncle nodded and said goodbye to Wang Peng.
After saying goodbye to the Indian uncle, Wang Peng got out of the car, took his suitcase, and walked into the airport. He quickly bought a ticket and boarded the plane.
The school Wang Peng's parents enrolled him in was in a small town in Texas, called Wells Union High School. From its location and name, it was a very unremarkable place.
Wang Peng bought a ticket to the nearest city to the town and, after landing, took a car to the town.
When he arrived, the first thing Wang Peng noticed about the town was its quietness and peace. Compared to the fast-paced, crowded cities like New York, this town was almost sleep-inducing. No wonder his mother had sent him here to enjoy school life.
"First, I'll check out the school, then find a place to live." Wang Peng thought as he wandered around the town, asking for directions to the school. He planned to visit the school.
The town was not large, but it wasn't small either. With some help, Wang Peng quickly found the high school he would be attending and entered to visit. The school was decent, not too small, and quite standard.
One notable feature was the square in front of the school building, which was not flat but tiered. Wang Peng saw many students sitting on the steps, chatting and laughing.
After touring the school, Wang Peng was quite satisfied and left to find a place to live near the school. He didn't want to stay in the school dormitory, as it could expose his secret.
By the time Wang Peng found a place to rent, it was already dark.
………………
Meanwhile, in New York, the Indian uncle, the genetics professor who had chatted with Wang Peng earlier, was sitting in his taxi. One hand held a hot dog, his dinner, while the other held a small notebook.
Suddenly, the back door opened, and someone sat in the back seat. The Indian uncle came to his senses and turned to say, "Sorry, I'm not... it's you? What are you doing here? Didn't I tell you not to come find me again!"
"That desire, I can't control it. I don't want to... it's you! You made me this way, you turned me into a murderer. You helped me unlock my potential, so why did you abandon me!?" The person in the back seat said, becoming more and more agitated.
"What do you want to do!?" The Indian uncle sensed danger and reached for the door to escape, but he heard two 'clicks.' The car doors were locked by an invisible force.
'Pang! Pang!' The person in the back seat punched through the glass separating the front and back seats, then grabbed the Indian uncle's head with both hands and smashed it against the window several times, blood splattering the glass.
'Crack!' With a final effort, the person twisted the Indian uncle's head, breaking his neck.
"S...e...l...a..." The Indian uncle, using his last strength, slowly uttered a name and slowly lost consciousness, his eyes wide open in anger and disbelief.
