The dress that Yang Yilan chose for Tang Ran for Old Master Luo’s birthday banquet was a sleeveless, round neck dress with a starry sky design: bright, shattered, star-like crystals decorated the girl’s dress and gleamed as she moved. The crystal muslin ribbon tied around her lower back outlined the girl’s waist.

Below the hemline were shiny, smooth and sleek white calves that increasingly contrasted against the dark dress. Like mutton fat jade, brightening up people’s eyes.

If there had to be one regret, it was probably the blind cane the girl held in her hand.

When the Tang family’s driver saw Tang Ran slowly walking out of the apartment building, he felt a little pity for the little girl.

When he returned to his senses, the girl had already stopped in front of the car, showing a little hesitance, “Uncle?”

The driver hurriedly pulled open the door, “Get in, Xiao Ran.”

”En.”

The few times Tang Ran had gone back to the Tang residence, it was always the same chauffeur who came. To avoid the psychological effect that small, enclosed spaces had on her, he drove the same soft-top1 convertible every time. Before Tang Ran came downstairs, he would first open the convertible’s roof.

(convertibles can have either a soft or hard roof according to google. dunno the difference between them but it’s not relevant)

Therefore, Tang Ran was no stranger to this process.

Only, this time Tang Ran sat in the car, as soon as she put away her white cane, she heard Yang Yilan’s voice coming from the direction of the apartment building.

”Hey, wait!”

The driver’s action of closing the door paused, and the girl sitting quietly inside the car with her legs bent also raised her head at the sound.

Yang Yilan, who was over 50 years old, walked like she was still young. Not even a few seconds later, she ran to the front of the car, carrying in her hand a jacket that was indistinguishable as to whether it was black or dark blue.

The driver blankly asked, “What’s wrong?”

”I thought about it, but I don’t know how long the Luo family’s Old Master’s birthday banquet will go on until. If it lasts until nighttime, then wouldn’t Xiao Ran be freezing wearing just this dress?” Yang Yilan said, draping the unzipped jacket onto her and pulling the collar tightly together.

Then she straightened back, looked Tang Ran up and down once then nodded her head in satisfaction.

”Not bad. Those women’s jackets at home are either too light in color to match this dress, or too soft in design and without style—I think this one is just right.”

The chauffeur had come to pick up Tang Ran a few times, and could be considered familiar with Yang Yilan. At her words, he retracted his gaze from the confused girl inside the car and nodded.

”It’s indeed quite suitable, but why is there male clothing in the house?”

Yang Yilan: “Don’t concern yourself over this. Quickly send Xiao Ran over. Don’t delay any longer.”

”Okay, okay. We’ll leave right now.”

”……”

The car door shut.

Tang Ran raised her hand in hindsight, fingertips touching the clothing on her body.

The fabric was cool to the touch, of an unknown kind of material. The faint amber cedar scent had been washed away, but Tang Ran could still recall it—

It was the jacket from yesterday. The jacket given to her by the guy who had the same voice as Luoluo.

After a few seconds, the corners of her eyes curved slightly. Taking advantage of the sound of the driver’s footsteps walking away, she softly called.

”Luoluo.”

”Here.” The familiar voice came from the phone grasped by her slender, fair fingers.

”Do I look pretty today?”

Starting off as a light, lazy laugh, it ended with a bit of a mischievous and cheeky feel: “Not pretty, like an ugly duckling.”

”Oh.”

The girl lightly responded, but her voice carried a hint of a smile.

.

According to the Tang family’s prior arrangement, the car was to take Tang Ran directly to the private estate where Old Master Luo held his birthday banquet.

Even though there weren’t many guests who were qualified to receive an invitation, the Luo family still had the attendees be diverted into designated buildings. The chauffeur sent Tang Ran to the building that was specifically responsible for receiving the Tang family, and the car stopped.

”Mister, madam and Miss Luoqian should have arrived.” The driver saw the vehicle with the Tang family’s license plate parked in front of their designated building, turned back to Tang Ran and said. “But they’re not in the car, probably already inside.”

Tang Ran’s eyelashes slightly trembled.

In a flash, her face spread into a light smile, “Then I’ll have to be quicker too.”

As the two of them spoke, the car door was pulled open from outside by the Luo family’s welcoming attendant. The driver promptly got out of the car and stopped in front of the other party, “I can do it.”

The attendant blanked.

At that moment, the girl in the car turned around with closed eyes. The thin white cane she held in her hand poked out from the drawn open door and carefully tapped on the unfamiliar ground.

The attendant came to a realization. A bit of understanding and some contempt flickered through his eyes, “This is Miss Tang Ran, right?”

”……”

“Bastard sons” and “illegitimate daughters”, this kind of thing in upper-class and rich family wasn’t uncommon. But they, after all, were people that couldn’t be shown in public. It inevitably attracted people to talk behind their backs.

Tang Ran wasn’t recognized by her family, but also alone without anyone to depend on, on top of being a delicate and weak girl. It could be said that she wasn’t threatening in the least, and she had no chance of reversing her fate in the future—it wasn’t surprising that this attendant was vaguely contemptuous of her.

The driver’s face was a bit ugly. But, after all, the Luo family was the host and he was just a driver. So even though it was unfair to Tang Ran, he couldn’t say anything.

In the time it took to exchange a few words, the girl with the thin blind cane had already come out.

She stood in front of the car, lifting her hand hesitantly to touch the jacket, wondering whether she should leave it in the car. The girl closed her eyes, followed the direction of the voice, and tilted her head slightly towards the attendant.

Her voice was light and calm, having its own distinct softness: “I’m Tang Ran.”

Seeing the girl standing in front of him, the attendant showed a stunned look.

Whether it was the delicate and pretty, conspicuously-gorgeous face, or the vaguely graceful outline of the young girl’s body, not even including the temperament that didn’t panic even when she couldn’t see the unfamiliar environment—the girl in front of him was not the least bit inferior to the other influential guests he had received.

This was really the….. Tang family’s unfavored young, blind, bastard daughter?

The waiter returned to his senses, hurriedly bowing his head.

”Miss Tang Ran, today’s birthday celebration is done according to seniority. Mr. Tang and Mrs. Tang have gone to the main building first. Prior to leaving, they arranged for you to meet with Miss Tang Luoqian before going over together.”

Tang Ran nodded, “Do I wait for her here?”

”There’s an outdoor promenade2 behind this building that leads to the main building. Miss Tang Ran, follow me into there first.”

(promenade picture below)

After saying that, the waiter fell into hesitation at the girl’s closed eyes: a girl of this age, carelessly making physical contact was obviously out of the question, but she couldn’t see….

In the silence, Tang Ran understood.

She gently quirked her lips and smiled lightly, “I’ll trouble you to lead the way in front. Just tell me where I should turn, go up and down steps, or avoid obstacles.”

”Okay, Miss Tang Ran, please follow me.” The attendant responded with some embarrassment.

Tang Ran bid the chauffeur uncle goodbye, following after the attendant into the building.

Hi! Check out my new project ‘Thousand Miles of Bright Moonlight‘!
