There were a lot of resources on Babylon. For example, the A.I. was directly connected to the government’s library, giving them access to the countless books in the database. In this day and age, books made of paper were considered quite rare, and the ones Hughton had thrown to Allen were already quite used.
The three books were titled, “Biography of Famous Generals”, “Strategies of Powerful Ministers” and “Playboy”. Looking at the third book, it seemed more like a magazine than a book, and a woman could be seen posing seductively on the front cover. Allen was confused, what was this supposed to teach him? As he wondered, Hughton’s hand suddenly snatched the magazine back as he coughed, “Wrong one.”
He then threw over another book, one about Dangers called “Biology Guide”.
The Death Ring was about the brutal competition between the participants, but it also included Dangers to raise the competition’s difficulty as well as viewer’s entertainment. This book was extremely useful for Allen, he needed to understand Dangers and their habits.
As for the other two books, the boy wasn’t as interested, after all, he wasn’t at the age yet where he liked strategies and planning.
Free time was allocated after lunch and it lasted for 2 hours each period, once in the afternoon and once at night. After lunch, Allen took the lift to the top floor, where there was a large free space right at the elevator’s door.
Using an open concept, Allen could see a space bigger than 5000m² from the lift. Allen was shocked again, this was a feeling he was slowly getting used to in here, and he quickly recovered.
Near the lift was an information wall that had the layout of the training hall. It was comprised of a gathering area and a few different training areas. The gathering area was for created for social activities and resting, and the other training areas had other instructors or trainers that taught the participants about the tools inside.
The best place to make friends was definitely in the middle of the hall, but Allen wasn’t in a rush. Instead, he was more interested in the different types of training areas, taking some time to go over the entire place wouldn’t take too long, and he could still meet his competitors afterwards.
The ability area was circled around the centre area of the hall. Following the arrow signs on the ground, Allen walked in a clockwise direction towards the first shooting area. It was divided into a few small areas where two children were training. One of them were shooting a sniper and the other had a bow.
Uninterested in shooting, Allen continued walking towards the next combat area. It allowed for the children to spar each other, or even against the A.I. Allen paused here for a second before continuing his tour.
Walking through half of the circle, he decided to stop at the ability area designed to train reflexes. There were a few children training there simultaneously, each of them were wearing a helmet and holding a metal rod. They swung at the air, occasionally dodging as they seemed to be fighting something.
A twenty year old women walked over from the side, wearing a tight silver uniform that hugged her curves. Looking at the badge on her chest, Allen could read her name, “Instructor Tessa”.
“I know you, the young master from District 13, right?” The instructor stood before him, bending over to meet his eyes, “So, do you want to take a look?”
From this angle, Allen could see her chest that was hidden right under her collar, a sight that easily incited a reaction from the young boy. Allen awkwardly took a few steps back as he asked, “What are they doing?”
“That’s a virtual simulator, it can train your reflexes using the simulation built by the A.I. It helps you to become faster, more precise and calmer.” Tessa walked behind the boy, pushing him forwards, “Let’s go try.”
And as she stood behind him, Allen’s height was just at her chest. As the boy realised what the soft sensation was behind him, Tessa whispered in his ear, “If you’d like, we can try something else too. But now isn’t the time.”
Another crazy proposition.
Bringing him into an empty training area, Tessa placed the helmet onto his head and handed him a metal rod.
The instructor explained, “The helmet will help you enter the simulation, and the device in your hand will replicate your preferred weapon through your habits. What you need to do, is to attack the virtual disks. You will gain points for every flying disk you break, and the difficulty will increase as you go.”
“Since it’s your first time here, we’ll try the lowest difficulty.”
After wearing the helmet, light started to slowly appear from his pitch dark surroundings, eventually becoming a simulated open grass plains. And as he took in his surroundings, he heard the A.I.’s prompt, “Please select your weapon.”
A menu appeared before him, presenting a large array of choices. Randomly choosing a zhan dao, Allen watched as the rod-like device in his hands turned into a meter long blade.
After tweaking it’s weight, length and width, a dadao that resembled Massacre appeared in his hands. Testing his grip, he spoke softly, “Begin.”
The words “LV 1” appeared before him as a flying disk was thrown his way, whistling in the air as it aimed towards his chest. Raising his blade, Allen swiftly cut the disk in half, causing it to burst into a ball of light.
More disks followed towards him from different angles and paths. Swinging the zhandao in his hands, Allen was able to cut down these targets easily. And after a few dozen disks, the a.i. begun to increase the difficulty. In a split second, Allen watched as two disks flew at him simultaneously, and with a wave of his blade, he cut them down.
And as the difficulty increased to LV 3, Allen started to sweat. He chose to dodge occasionally as he anticipated the disk’s paths. On the next level, four disks started to fly his way as it’s speed increased, giving him less time to react.
And as the four disks flew his way, it seemed that no matter how he dodged, he would still hit one of them. But right before it collided into him, Allen suddenly jumped forwards, sliding across the tiny space between the four disks. Landing on the ground, he quickly spun around and slashed at the four disks, cutting it down!
As he was wearing the helmet, he couldn’t see the group of people that had gathered outside of his area. It consisted of the instructors and the trainers in the area, and even some of the committee members who were recording something down with their A.I. Other than them, there were a few of the contestants of the Death Ring who were staring at the scoreboard on the training area.
And as the number reached 485, a girl couldn’t help but gasp, “He broke Lucy’s record!”
“Who’s that guy?”
“You don’t know? That’s Allen from District 13, the idiot that willingly joined the Death Ring.”
And as the children discussed amongst themselves, a child cried out suddenly as he pointed at the board, “He’s past 500, oh god, that’s level 5!”
Allen was currently facing five flying disks, a difficulty that reached his limits. On the third wave, Allen was finally hit in the chest as the A.I. announced the end of his training.
After taking off his helmet, he was immediately greeted by Tessa, who took him into her embrace excitedly. Allen could almost feel himself suffocating in her chest as he struggled to get away. And as he did, he noticed the crowd outside of the training area clapping for him. As for the children that was his competitors, he could feel the animosity in their gazes towards him. Allen already knew that these children were definitely not going to be part of his alliance.
“Not bad, you actually beat my record!” An arrogant voice broke through the crowd as they split aside, revealing a girl that was about Allen’s age. She walked over with about 5 more children behind her.
The girl’s bright golden ponytail resembled a flame as it danced behind her as she walked. Her features were as beautiful a painting’s, she had an air of haughtiness and a pair of rare green eyes that reflected Allen’s figure like green gems. Circling Allen, she “accidentally” pushed Tessa aside as she grabbed his shoulder, “I like you, come, be my underling!”
A few of the boys behind her turned their heads as they laughed. But compared to them, Allen wasn’t happy at all. Obviously, this girl was beautiful and there was an aura on her that Allen liked, a feeling that resembled the mountains and the forest. Unfortunately, this girl had a haughty personality that was borderline arrogant. Allen picked up her small hand that was on his shoulder with two of his fingers as he answered, “I refuse.”
“Why?” The girl was surprised.
“I don’t want to become anyone’s underling, especially a woman’s.”
