Maine’s interest in the boy had instantly increased Ansi’s worth, along with his ranking. From his initial position at the sixth place, he shot up to the second place almost instantly.
“I hope those two tons weren’t the entirety of your savings, Mr Maine.” Horn turned towards his butler, nodding his way.
“Allen, two tons of platinum.” The butler raised two of his fingers.
Maine’s expression fell almost instantly, after he had defeated Horn politically twenty years ago, the Beskards had chosen to recluse themselves. But today, it was obvious that he had decided on going against him. Furrowing his brows, he couldn’t find a reason why, even with his intellect. In the previous Death Ring games, there were a few incidents where a family would place large sums on contestants, but Horn’s exorbitant bet of thirty million was rare.
“Ansi, two tons of platinum.” Maine raised his hand, bidding again.
At this moment, all of the government platforms on Babylon were refreshing the worth of both Allen and Ansi live. Many of the residents could see the competition in the worth of these two children and therefore decided to place their own bets on them as well, causing the price on them to update constantly.
Horn was unbothered as he glanced at the butler.
“Allen, add another two tons of platinum.” The butler instantly spoke.
The hall was quiet, the Beskards who were silent for twenty years actually spent fifty million for a land child, this was a record breaking sum in the history of the Death Ring. Right now, all of the nobles in the hall had their curious eyes on Maine, they were waiting to see if he would follow the bet.
However, beads of sweat were forming on Maine’s forehead. Within his authority, four tons of platinum was the entirety of his spending limit. If he wanted to continue bidding, he needed to get approval through a family meeting. He might be the head of the family, but he still had his responsibilities.
“Five tons of platinum. Mr. Horn, I must say that I am curious, with the current state of your family, are you able to take out such a large sum? Or will it be a blank cheque?” Maine forced a smile.
The butler Haising took out a check emotionlessly and handed it over to Alster, “This is a bearer cheque from the Beskard family, the limit is just at fifty million. If you’d like, Mr. Alster, you can collect the five tons of platinum from our family’s warehouse, or use it as credit.”
And as Alster took the cheque from the butler, Horn turned towards his somewhat young enemy, “Is Mr. Maine planning to increase his bet?”
Maine pulled out a handkerchief from the pocket of his coat and wiped his sweat, “No thanks, I’m a businessman, and it would be stupid of me to place all of my money into an investment I can’t breakeven with.”
He then turned to Alster, “I will have my secretary bring the cheque later.”
“I’m rather busy, so I will take my leave now.” Maine regained his carefree aura, and anyone could see that his initial arrogant atmosphere was gone. And as he left, he turned his head one last time and placed his arm onto Horn’s shoulder as he leaned forwards, “Mr. Horn, I’ll remind you of this, considering our many years of friendship. While the Beskards are strong in their history and their foundation, there isn’t a single qualified successor in your next generation. And after Mr. Horn, the Beskards wouldn’t be our rivals anymore, I’ll be lonely then.”
Finishing what he had to say, he laughed loudly as he left.
Horn reached to dust his shoulder as he turned to look at Allen’s headshot, he spoke with a voice only he could hear, “Idiot, the future of the Beskards is right here. It wouldn’t be long before you’d meet a strong contender, dear Maine Alexander!”
There was a private room at the left side of the ballroom. One side of the room’s wall was made with an one-sided window, allowing those within the room to look outside. At this moment, a large sturdy man was standing right at the window.
He had European features and a rare head of black hair, his deep features were similar to the David statue carved by Michelangelo, and under his tall nose and his chin was a well groomed beard that added to his dignified aura.
Within the ballroom, most of the men were wearing suits, but this man was dressed in a military uniform, boots, white gloves and had a sabre by his waist. The sabre’s scabbard was made with white gold and decorated with dark golden patterns. It’s cupped handguard as well as it’s hilt was a silver colour that was polished extremely well, and it reflected a figure from its side.
”That old thing Horn is pretty aggressive today. Poor Maine just wanted to take a cheap shot, but he only realised that the bones of the Beskards were still hard after taking a bite.” The man wearing the military uniform laughed with a deep, hoarse voice.
The man next to him spoke, “Thanks to Maine, just his and Horn’s bet alone gives us quite a good commission at 10%.”
“But it seems that Horn has finally aged. He actually placed such a bet because of Maine’s provocation, I’d bet he’s already regretting his choice.” The man laughed softly.
The uniformed man spoke, “Just with this sentence alone has doomed you to be a clerk forever, Vincent. You will never be someone like Horn.”
Shocked by his words, he quickly lowered his head as dissatisfaction flashed past his eyes. However, his voice was still full of respect, “Please tell me why.”
“If you check Horn’s history, you’d find that the old fox has never made a meaningless investment. Do you think just Maine alone could ruffle him? You think too highly of Maine, the only reason why the Alexanders rose to power was not because of Maine’s abilities, but because of an incident that killed Horn’s will, only then did his family lose power.” The uniformed man paused, “If not, not even three Maines could go against Horn.”
“Just wait, Horn definitely has a reason to invest in that boy.”
“Very insightful, sire.” Vincent praised.
He then asked, “In your opinion, which child has the highest chances of winning in this round’s Death Ring?”
“Who knows? Even the kid Horn has his eyes on might lose. After all, there are too many surprises in this world.” The uniformed man walked towards another door, “Regardless, this is just child’s play. It’s a game once a year that gives hope to those peasants on land, if they focus on this game, they wouldn’t have the time to care about other matters.”
“Some things we don’t want them to focus on.” He emphasised, “Our real stage is on the war outside of the city, my dear Vincent. I heard that our Greedy Wolf general is coming back soon, I hope she’ll bring us good news.”
“General Windsorbello is young and capable, I am sure she wouldn’t disappoint you.”
Opening the door, the man suddenly paused as he spoke, “Vincent, place a million on our little Allen in my name later.”
“Sire, you……”
“No, this is my respect towards Horn. The Beskards have been quiet for twenty years, and now that they’re finally moving again, I am simply elated.”
Leaving this sentence, he walked out of the doors. The clerk lowered his head as he whispered at the door, “Noted, Sire Mobit.”
The uniformed man was the current president of the government.
The artificial rain was still pouring on Babylon, and in the training centre, Allen was still falling all over himself as he trained “Pivot”. The world seemed to be the same, but the reality was that everyone’s fate had just changed abruptly.
On the weekend of the third week, the rankings were refreshed again. Allen was still at the top, while Lucy had dropped to third place. On the other hand, Ansi had rose by a few ranks, chasing on Allen’s heels.
Allen had received a piece of light military armor, a precious vial of Origin stimulant medicine as well as a few other rewards this time. Within these presents, the first two were the most valuable. The light military armor was made up of a tactical uniform as well as armour, providing Allen with additional defence. The Origin stimulant’s properties were simply described in its name, it’s purpose was to help the growth of the user’s Origin.
Along with the previous fire berries and body strengthening medicine, Allen was finally able to condense his fifth Origin vortex at the end of the third week. But he had an unhappy expression as he left the training area.
Hughton took a swig of his alcohol, “What’s wrong, kid?”
“Mr. Hughton, I’ve already condensed my fifth Origin vortex.” Allen spoke.
Hughton eyed him, “That’s a good thing, so why do you look like you’ve just lost your life savings?”
“But, it’s too slow.” Allen sat down as he sighed, “According to you, I’ll need at least nine Origin vortexes to break the first barrier. There’s only one week before the Death Ring starts, and I’ve only formed five.”
“Be grateful, kid.” Hughton shook his head, “Your growth is already very fast. Furthermore, you can’t rush your Origin’s growth, you can only get stronger with plenty of time and hardwork.”
“Isn’t there a faster way?” Allen didn’t give up.
Hughton placed his bottle down, “Of course there is, but it’s an unpopular method. But it should be alright for you, since you won’t have a choice soon.”
“What way?” Allen’s eyes light up. For the current him, he was willing to do anything to condense all nine of his Origin vortexes quickly.
“With battle.” Hughton burped, causing the air to be filled with an alcoholic stench, “In my knowledge, constant battle and the incessant treading between the line of life and death is the best method to gather Origin.”
