Hughton tossed the empty bottle onto the ground as he lied down on the sofa, “There is three ways to increase to Origin, one is to calm yourself through meditation and moving your consciousness into the depths of your Genes in your cells to circulate your Origin and strengthen them; the second is physical training, by circulating the Origin within the body as you trained, it would grow naturally; and finally, the last method is to train by combat, the split second between life and death would stimulate all of your senses and help your Origin grow.”

“In these three methods, only the third is the fastest way. The others are suitable in the beginning, but after a certain point, you’d be more comfortable with killing and using those methods would become hard. This method is basically allows you to benefit from murder, but even if you’re unwilling, you wouldn’t have a choice when the Death Ring starts.” Hughton glanced at Allen, “When the time comes, you will have to kill no matter what. So all you have to do is to survive to the end, and the nine Origin vortexes will naturally form then. After all, you’re still new to this world and your senses are not numbed yet, this method would be suitable for you.”

Allen nodded, letting Hughton continue, “But you must remember, if you survive, you must not continue down this path, it’s a narrow road with limited potential. You must learn to be like the disciples of the different noble houses and train yourself with all three methods. Using willpower to temper your Origin and guiding your potential, combined with combat experiences to train your techniques. Only then can you create your own path.”

Finishing what he had to say, Hughton yawned as he waved him away, “Go, go, your little girlfriend is looking for you…”

And just as he ended his sentence, Lucy’s voice rang out from the door’s intercom, “Allen, are you there?”

And as Allen turned to leave, Hughton was already asleep. Outside the door, Lucy had both of her arms on her waist as she smiled, “Not bad, you’re the top again this week, did you get a lot of good stuff?”

She slapped Allen’s shoulder. Lucy was wearing twin tails today, and her golden locks were shining in Allen’s eyes as she moved. Rubbing his pained shoulder, he spoke, “It’s not as much as you think, there’s only one or two useful items.”

“Is that so?” Lucy leaned forwards suddenly, her nose almost touching Allen’s.

This position was a bit questionable, and Allen was uncomfortable as he forced a smile, “Why, is there something on my face?”

“No, you seem a bit strange today, like you’re somewhat lethargic.”

Allen laughed, “Not everyone is as hyperactive as you.”

“My old man told me that sadness was a sign of a lack of confidence.” Lucy straightened her body and patted her chest, “Of course a confident lady like myself would be full of spirit! Get some energy, I thought of a fun way to train today, let’s go.”

The girl dragged Allen towards the lift with his hand in hers, and the boy could feel the warmth of her hands worming into his heart. Positive energy was infectious, and for Lucy who resembled the sun, it was easy for those around her to become more cheerful as well. Ever since he had met Lucy, the cold depths of his heart were unconsciously being melted.

He really wanted to hold her hand like this forever.

Because of her, he could feel the sun’s embrace.

Dreams were always pleasant, but reality was completely different. And just as the two of them entered the lift, Lucy released his hand. Disappointment flashed past the boy’s mind, but he was quickly distracted by her voice. The boy shook his head as he smiled, being with Lucy made it hard to be closed off, because the golden haired girl would always pull his attention elsewhere.

And as the lift reached the top floor and opened its door, Allen didn’t realise as he continued to answer Lucy. Only after the girl dragged him out did he realise that they had arrived.

There were two people standing outside of the lift, one of them was Lucy’s friend, Emily. The other had his back facing them, he seemed to have been speaking to Emily, but he quickly left with a, “I should go.”. As he turned his head, both Allen and Lucy paused, this was her teacher’s lover. The two of them didn’t expect to see him here.

The man was obviously oblivious to what they’ve done, and he even nodded towards Lucy before entering the lift. After watching the doors of the lift close, Lucy quickly asked Emily, “Did he do anything to you?”

Emily was confused as he replied her close friend, “He’s my teacher Mr. Hanni, what could he do to me?”

Realising that she was overthinking, Lucy stuck her tongue out at the girl.

“Let’s go training.” The girl was used to calling the shots, and she pulled Allen along towards the training area with an arm in the air.

In the remaining days, Allen continued his training like clockwork. Just as Hughton had explained, there was no shortcut to take when training Origin. Allen could only meditate and train himself to grow his Origin, but calming his consciousness to delve into the depths of his Genes wasn’t an easy task. Especially without the aid of the stimulant drugs he had used to light his tinder, Allen couldn’t enter that strange sea of Origin in his Genes. As for circulating his Origin to temper it, it was a slow method with gradual progress.

And in these few days, his growth was extremely limited.

The biggest achievement he had these few days was the “Pivot” technique, under Hughton’s teachings, Allen was now able to use this technique to dodge a majority of Hughton’s attacks. And after learning both Pivot and Crescent Moon, Allen had now built his foundation for combat.

It was friday.

It was the free time during lunch when Allen headed to the training hall on the top floor. Lucy hadn’t arrived yet, and as Allen walked out of the lift, he was stopped by a large boy.

“Hey, Allen.” The light brown haired boy waved towards him, “Lucy is waiting for you at the combat area, follow me, she says she wants to train for team battles.”

Allen’s brows furrowed. This was one of Lucy’s friends, Mike. He usually hangs out with Emily and a few other children, and were obviously a small team together with them. Allen didn’t like to train with these children, and he had always felt uncomfortable because of the traces of hostility in their gazes. But today, Mike seemed to be extra hospitable as he welcomed Allen, and seeing that he didn’t move, he walked towards him and whispered, “Listen, I don’t like you. But the Death Ring starts in two days, and I’ll beat you to my heart’s content then, or I’ll even kill you if I felt like it. But I won’t now, and I wouldn’t want Lucy to be upset, understand?”

Hearing this, Allen decided to follow him towards the combat area. He could see children battling there, but there wasn’t a trace of Lucy. Mike asked a boy who was watching the fight, “Where’s Lucy?”

The boy shrugged, “She just left with Emily, they said it’s some girl talk or something.”

Mike smiled helplessly at Allen, “Girls always have secrets like this, how about this, you can play with me for a bit? Don’t worry, I won’t hurt you too much.” He turned to smile at the other child.

The accidental flash of contempt in the boy’s eyes pricked Allen, he nodded, “Alright.”

The two boys walked towards the area and started their fight with a glance. Both of them pounced at the same moment and their fists collided in the air. It was obvious from this exchange that Mike had a good foundation in combat techniques and a good balance between his offence and his defence. Allen on the other hand relied on his speed to look for openings before striking ruthlessly. The two of their fighting styles were completely different.

Interchanging between offence and defence, Mike waited for an opportunity before slamming his shoulder into Allen’s arms, sending him backwards. And using that moment, his eyes turned cold as he moved forwards, throwing his fist towards Allen’s throat. The sound of splitting wind could be heard from his fists as circular ripples appeared in front of his hand!

This was also a technique within the Military’s Shida, Pierce. It was a method that gathered Origin at the fist to create a piercing attack at high speeds. Even if it was the most basic application of this technique, if Mike’s fist were to land, there was no doubt that a hole would form in Allen’s throat.

He wants to kill me?

As this thought flashed past his mind, Allen could feel his anger rising. His body reacted involuntarily as he turned on his heel and activated his Origin, lightly swerving towards Mike’s left.

And after he dodged, he raised his leg with a curve of light as it aimed towards Mike’s temple.

Crescent Moon kick!

But Mike reacted just as quickly, after he had missed, he quickly retracted his fist to block the attack with his arm. At the same time, he placed his weight onto the tip of his foot as he slid towards the side, and the kick that could break a tin puppet with ease simply sent Mike a few steps back and onto the ground.

Allen pulled back his leg as he spoke with a low voice, “What is this? Just now, were you trying to kill me?”

Mike’s expression fell as he crawled up from the ground, “That’s right, you’ve been too close with Lucy. Before you appeared, that position was mine! I was going to kill you during the Death Ring, but I can’t wait anymore. I’m going to cripple you today.”

And as he finished, he suddenly punched himself in the face, causing his lips to split open as blood poured out. Wiping the blood from his mouth, he smiled cruelly, “Of course, you can call for help. But when they come, I’ll say that you started it, and when I cripple you, I can simply claim self defence.”

“They are more than happy to back me up.”

Only then did Allen realise that the children fighting earlier had all gathered around them. They had cleverly blocked behind Allen and Mike, preventing passerbys from noticing the situation.

Allen nodded, “Don’t worry, I won’t.”

It was an unexpected answer. And as he stared into Allen’s clear eyes, Mike could feel a chill creeping up his back.
