When Lannie turned to look behind her, Allen was already at the door of his room. The five year old boy was unusually calm as he asked softly, “Mommy, who are the predators?”
“Demons.” Lannie explained, “The pitiful demons.”
Only after a few years did Allen understand this line. But for now, Lannie didn’t bother to explain, “Allen, we need to leave. Take your dagger and leave the rest!”
The duo borught a simple luggage with them as they ran out of the house, but as they took a step out, a fiery glow appeared from the town’s entrance, followed by an explosion in house nearby. Flames poured from the windows and the doors, destroying the house as it formed a ten meter long pillar.
Accompanying the light from the flames, the force from the explosion sent the duo flying back into their house and slammed them together. Taking a few seconds, Lannie turned to shake her still dazed child. The boy struggled to stand up and after he signalled that he was okay, the two tried to head out again. But as they did, Lannie noticed a few figures appear from the fire a few meters away.
Those were a few unfamiliar men covered in tattoos and carrying chainsaws and shotguns, they were killing the residents of the town indiscriminately. However, one of the men turned towards the house, his eyes meeting Lannie’s.
Gritting her teeth, she ran forwards and slammed the door shut and then dragged a table towards the door, blocking it. Not wasting a single second, she ran back inside the room, tearing up the rug on the ground to reveal an underground cellar they had been using it to hide their food. Beckoning Allen over, she opened the trapdoor.
Allen could tell what was going to happen and he trembled as he walked over quietly. Leaving a kiss his forehead, she whispered, “Don’t come out, Allen. You need to live! Then, kill your father with this dagger. His name is Archimedes, if it wasn’t for him, our lives would’ve have been this cursed!”
Aiden’s body trembled as the name repeated itself in his head: Archimedes. He stared blankly at the door, as cellar was not completely dark he could see the light seeping in from the top of his head, accompanied by the sounds from outside.
The sound of the door being slammed.
Then, it was followed by the sound of something heavy falling. Then, Lannie’s screams and the sounds of her gun being shot. As he listened, Allen curled himself into a ball. Suddenly, a bang resonated along with a fiery heat had spread above him. The bright lights from the flames reflected onto the boys face, as it seeped into into the cellar from the cracks of the wooden door.
That was the sound of a grenade.
On that night night, screams, roars and explosions could be heard throughout the town. In the tiny cellar, Allen stayed as still as a statue calmly, just like the day he was born, but the only difference was the water gathering inside his bright red eyes.
At the same time, in the little heart of the boy, a small corner became as stiff as ice.
But even the longest nights had to pass, and when he finally left the cellar, he saw nothing but burnt land around him. The once silver and white road was now revealing the earth beneath it, coloured in black. And on the ground around him, Allen could see pieces of corpses scattered about. Among them, Allen saw a broken finger, a finger with a burnt silver ring.
An indescribable feeling of sorrow washed into his heart, and the boy took a deep breath to stop himself from crying.
That was Lannie’s ring.
On the streets of the towns and the destroyed houses were countless corpses, all of which were the residents of the town. Most of them were men, but women and children could be seen amongst them. Not too far away, Allen could see Moss, the fat boy next door who was a year older than him. He had just fought with that boy the other day, but he was now in pieces, with half of his body missing.
Looking up, Allen felt a bit lost. There was not a single living being in the town, neither any survivors or the predators, who had left before dawn. The world was huge, so huge that there didn’t seem to be an edge; yet it seemed small, too small to even hold a small boy.
For a moment, Aiden didn’t know where to go.
Aiden walked aimlessly on the street as a soft breeze flew past him, carrying a strange odour with it. Just as he turned around, he saw a black figure jump towards him from one of the destroyed houses. A bang resonated in his head, followed by complete silence in the world. When he had finally regained his bearing, eyes widened as he stared at the black figure, it was a wolf.
A wolf as big as a calf.
It had a body of grey fur and a huge mouth strong enough to snap thick iron bars, easily capable of snapping Allen’s neck.
It was a snow wolf, a Danger that only hunted in the winter. Normally, a seasoned hunter would be enough against this kind of Danger, but Allen was only a five year old child!
In the eyes of the snow wolf, this was a snack that came to its way. Despite the little meat human children had, it was extremely delicious, and the wolf could not wait to taste the blood flowing in his tender neck. But as it stared into the eyes of the gem like red eyes of the boy, it watched as a ring of silver patterns appeared in his pupils, the snow wolf felt fear.
It was just like it had met it’s natural enemy, rather than a tender, delicious human child.
And what followed, happened in an instant.
The snow wolf did not bite the boy’s neck, and as Allen was pounced on, he instinctively rolled forwards, towards the underbelly of the wolf. The dagger in his hands naturally thrusted upwards, and the boy simply relied on the sharpness of the dagger and the pouncing motion of the wolf, tearing a large wound on the wolf’s belly.
Blood, guts and innards spilled onto the boy. And as he climbed from underneath the wolf’s body, he had became an unrecognisable blood human. But before he had a chance to take a breather, countless green lights floated from the corners of the streets, the roofs and other places.
Dangers like snow wolves usually moved in packs. And there was a total of 23 of them, surrounding Allen.
With his attention on the snow wolves, Allen didn’t notice that the blood on the Devil’s Praise had disappeared.
What was left was only a dark red bloodstain on the blade, the blood of the dead.
The pack didn’t rush to attack, and Allen turned to look at one of them. It was the smallest, normal sized silver snow wolf that had a light it’s companions didn’t.
It was a dim silver light. It was lonely, yet harsh like the autumn winds.
The silver wolf moved forwards, circling around Allen. It’s wet nose sniffed around Allen’s body as he stood there stiffly. This moment lasted no more than a few seconds, but it felt like a lifetime for Allen.
The silver wolf took a few steps back, opening its mouth to speak with the human language, “You’re afraid of me?”
Allen was shocked silent.
A human-like smile appeared on the silver wolf’s face, “Our autonomy might be different, but with the help of certain muscles, I can still mimic the sound you humans make. Why, haven’t you seen this before?”
The boy shook his head.
A bit of shock appeared in the calm blue eyes of the silver wolf, “You don’t smell bad, I like you. Since your kind is already dead, do you want to go with me? Or, you want to become our lunch?”
“If I go with you, would you kill me?”
“Of course not, instead, I’ll teach you to hunt. But if you want to eat, you have to depend on yourself to hunt, just like my companions.
“Then I’ll go with you.” Allen didn’t hesitate, he remembered the last request his mother had. No matter what, even if he had to live with snow wolves, he had to survive.
Only by surviving, could he fulfil Lannie’s dying wish!
And on this day, a small young boy and a silver snow wolf left the destroyed town.
“Right, my name is Bai Fang.” On the road, the silver wolf introduced itself.
“I’m Allen.”
The boy hesitated as he asked, “Why did you let me go?”
“Because you’re afraid of me, but more so, it’s because I’m lonely…”
The world continued to move forward at its own pace, pulled by the unrelenting teeth of time. And in the blink of an eye, five winters had passed.
Year 433 of the Dawn calendar, summer.
A team of native soldiers moved within the forest, they were a hunting team that served to complete all kinds of missions and occasionally hunted Dangers for their own personal profit. The team was made up of three people, all of which were Origin users, especially the leader Andy, a level nine Origin user! He had hired hired the mercenaries at the nearby Gaul City for the sole purpose of understanding his surroundings.
At this moment, the leader of the mercenaries, Gut, spoke, “Boss, we’re close to the wolves den.”
The leader Andy glanced at the man, “Leader Gut, you’re sure the damned snow wolves are near?”
“We took a request from Gaul last month, when we surveyed the mountain’s inhabitants, we did find the den of the snow wolves. They should be there if they didn’t migrate.” But after pausing for a second, the man explained further, “The snow wolves hate summer, during this season, they usually spending their time hiding in the cold caves, so there’s a small chance that they’ve migrated.”
“Good.” Andy stood up, revealing a greedy flint in his eyes, “I heard that a silver snow wolf appeared in this pack, its fur is extremely rare! It’s impossible to not get rich now.”
As the hunting team appeared, at another part of the forest was a deer pacing amongst the grass, it had a intricate pair of horns that resembled a crown on its head, a weapon it used to defend itself. It was using its horns to move the grass, checking for traps and dangers lurking on the ground. And after ensuring it was safe, deer began to graze on the greenery, relying on the water and the fibre in the plants to sustain itself.
Suddenly, the deer raised its head and leaned its weight onto the ground with its hind legs, forming a beautiful curve with its body. It had felt that something was wrong, using its instinct and perception, a skill that had kept it alive. But this was an exception, a silver light appeared suddenly from a nearby tree, and with a tremble of its body, the deer fell to the ground with a dying cry.
A sharp dagger dug into its neck, freezing the expression of fear on the deer’s face as it felt its something in its body being sucked away. It didn’t die instantly, but instead flailed its limbs around helplessly as it looked at its predator that appeared from the tree.
