“Lieutenant, what’s the art of taking blows?”
A black child timidly asked.
Lieutenant Ron nodded at the boy, “Good question, there is a skill to being beaten. In a battle, it is hard to avoid every attack, and you must learn to soften the blows and reduce your injuries as much as possible. For that, you need to understand the situation well and have sufficient knowledge of your own body. Only then, can you learn to avoid severe injuries.”
He walked to a bloodied metal bed where a girl laid motionlessly, she was just beaten to death by one of the instructors. With little care for the corpse, Ron dragged it onto the ground and kicked at her head. Pointing at her ears, he continued his lesson, “As you can see here, this is the result of her ignorance. Her arms are capable of taking more damage than her head, ears and other similar areas, and if she had chosen to protect her head with her hands, she wouldn’t have died.”
“And for the arms, if I were to cut it with my knife…” beckoning at an instructor behind him, Ron took a blade in his hands and sliced open the corpse’s shoulder, “Look, there are more muscles and fats here. If you were injured here, you’d simply have a superficial wound and lose a bit of blood. But if it were here…”
The blade glinted in the light as it sliced at the corpse’s wrist. Fresh blood instantly gushed out of the wound, spurting onto Ron’s face. Unperturbed, he wiped the blood off his smile, “Do you understand? Little shrimps, all of you must learn to understand your bodies if you want to live. When faced with an attack, you must learn to choose which body parts to sacrifice for your survival!”
Using the girl’s corpse, Ron continued his dissection lesson with the children. And when the class finally ended, the girl’s body was already unrecognisable, with her innards spilling out onto the floor, filling the barracks with the thick scent of blood. The Instructors were emotionless, but most of the children had already vomited their stomachs empty.
Compared to them, Allen was only a bit paler than usual. He was used to sights like this, but the complete disregard Ron had for the girl’s corpse had made him uncomfortable. After all, that body was just alive and moving a few minutes prior.
Ron had a satisfied expression as he looked at the children, he even had the Instructors copy down the numbers of those who didn’t vomit. Looking at Allen, he walked towards him, “Not bad kid, you have my interest. You’re more nimble and alert than the rest. Tell me, what is your name?”
“Allen.”
“Alright, Allen. Let me guess, your father is a hunter?”
“No, I don’t have a father, and my mother died when I was five.” Allen answered.
This was a surprise to Ron, if this white furred boy didn’t learn from his parents, he was most likely self taught. To learn survival tactics like this meant that the child was probably used to the wilderness. As his mind wandered, Ron’s interest in the boy grew.
“I like you, Allen. You should try your best to survive to the end.” He spoke as he patted Allen’s shoulder with a bone shattering strength.
After leaving the barracks, lieutenant Ron returned to his office and had an instructor retrieve Allen’s information. Looking at his serial number, Ron laughed, “Seems like someone is playing tricks right under my eyes.”
On the file, number 666 was supposed to be a child named Beth with a father that owned mines. This was a completely different story from Allen’s. Calling for an instructor, he tossed the file into his face, “Who brought this kid?”
The instructor quickly replied, “It was Levin, lieutenant.”
“Good, bring Levin to me.”
In the barracks, two soldiers brought medicinal salves for the children. After patching himself up, Allen turned to the instruction manual. Before he turned five, he had already learned a lot from Lannie and knew how to read. Majority of the children isn’t he barracks were illiterate, but Allen could at least understand most of the manual.
The Survival Games were the byproduct of the Battle of Dawn. To ingrain the importance of survival in the human race, the Government created this competition. Initially, it was only hosted on the floating island, but the population grew, countless humans were thrown back onto the land.
And as time passed, the conflict between those on the floating island and the lands continued to grow. Every two years, the system would choose citizens of the 22 districts around the age of 10-15 years old. Through intense training and elimination, one participant would eventually represent their district to fight for their lives on the floating island, or a chosen district.
The winner would receive countless rewards, including weapons, gear, money and even the rights to stay on the Babylon. Occasionally, lucky winners would even be chosen by wealthy families to become a part of their family, gaining more resources and opportunities to grow stronger.
Most importantly, winners had the special privilege to bring ten people of their choosing to move onto the Babylon, an opportunity that the land dwellers could only dream of.
Therefore, the Survival Games were considered a life changing opportunity. That is if they could survive to the bitter end.
As he finished reading the manual, an anguished scream came from the outside. Running to the windows with the rest of the children, they watched as lieutenant Ron caned a fatty with a rod, who was tied up on the training grounds. Allen recognised that man, it was the soldier that had him replace Beth.
Suddenly, an instructor walked into the barracks, “Number 666, gather!”
Allen was brought to the training grounds as lieutenant landed his last whip, the fatty was covered in blood as his head hung downwards, it was unclear whether he was alive. Standing before Allen with a vicious expression on his face, the murderous intent seeping from his body caused the boy’s face to pale as he straightened his body.
Hiding his murderous intent, Ron spoke, “This number does not belong to you, and pig has confessed to taking a bribe. The thing I detest the most, is being treated like a fool. This pig and Hearn’s whole family will die for this!”
“As for you….” Ron spoke, “I will give you a choice, do you want to continue training, or leave? This is my rare show of mercy, so pick wisely.”
Biting his lip, Allen waved the manual in his hands, “I want to know if this is true, the prizes.”
“It’s true.” After wiping his hands with a towel, Ron pointed to the sky, “Under the influence of the rich old men up there, the games have changed quite a bit. But what remains unchanged is the prizes and its ability to change a human’s fate.”
“Then I choose to stay.” Allen gritted his teeth.
Squinting his eyes, Ron lowered his head, “Why? Those kids in there would pray for a chance to leave. Believe me when I say I’ve shown plenty of mercy today, your days in the future will only get worse.”
Allen shook his head as he stared at the lieutenant with his calm red eyes, “Because I need to change my fate, I need power to exact my revenge!”
Ron stared at Allen, who didn’t avert his eyes. After a second, the lieutenant nodded, “Alright, if you choose to stay in hell, I hope you’re prepared to become a devil yourself. Otherwise, you’re bound to die.”
Allowing Allen to leave, Ron turned to an instructor next to him, “I like this kid more and more, he’s determined, just like a wolf. If he survives, I would to pity that prey of his.”
The instructor laughed awkwardly. Everyone knew that lieutenant’s favour was not a blessing at all.
At 4 in the night that day, a sharp whistle rang throughout the barracks. Allen’s eyes opened almost immediately, and without any hesitation, he jumped off the metal bed and flipped through the window. He was still wearing the full army outfit, along with his boots unlike some of the children, who chose comfort. Those that were slightly smarter ran out naked at the sound of the whistle, and the slower ones hesitated on dressing themselves.
In just ten seconds, Allen was the first to reach the training grounds, followed by about ten more children, all of which were dressed in the full outfit. The third batch to arrive were about 8 children who had chose to undress to sleep, and were wearing only their underwear. The final batch to arrive consisted of five children, barely meeting the time limit.
On the 15th second, the vicious Instructors rushed into the barracks and begun whipping at the children, causing screams to erupt from the barracks. The four remaining children who were late received five whips each, and the instructors had no mercy as they beaten the children bloody before chasing them out.
Looking at their bloody bodies, the remaining children shivered. Ron was calm as he spoke, “This is your first mistake, consider these five canes as a reminder. Get their numbers down. From this point onwards, every subsequent mistake will double your punishment.”
“Alright, start running kids. Run the laps around this training field until I stop you, understood?”
“Understood!”
The children replied unanimously.
Ps. I made a mistake last chapter, the time limit is 15 seconds, not 15 minutes.
Yes I’m alive, I’m translating this as a hobby, expect 1 chapter a day minimum for the next two months.
