Chapter 19

After eating, Wang Bo told Huang Wen that he still had to report to the head teacher. She then asked him what had been said when he was called in the morning. So, Wang Bo revealed that he had scored 99 points in the English exam and said he needed to take a test to prove his innocence.
Huang Wen trusted him very much and did not suspect that he had already done the test. Hearing that his English had improved so much, she asked, "Do you have any secrets? My English scores have never been good."
"I don't have any secrets. Just memorize more words. Once your vocabulary improves, practice your listening and conversation skills. Your grammar will naturally get better." He said this off the top of his head, recalling some of the advice his teachers had given to students.
Huang Wen's eyes twinkled as she asked in English, "Can you teach me?"
Wang Bo subconsciously replied in English, "Sure, but you have to work hard too."
"I mean, can you really teach me? I'll hire you as my tutor and pay you. What do you think?" She asked with a hint of excitement.
"Are you kidding? How could I be a tutor? You can easily find a teacher a hundred times better than me. Don't tease me," he said in surprise.
"That's different," Huang Wen shook her head. "Actually, I've never had tutoring before. I don't like it. But you're an exception. If you're willing to be my tutor, I'll be willing to take classes. What do you say? We can negotiate the pay, and you can earn some pocket money."
"But I don't have time. I need to practice for the cultural festival performance," Wang Bo's tone softened. In his heart, he was quite willing to tutor a beautiful girl and earn some extra money, but he really didn't have time recently.
"Then let's talk about it when you have time. I'm not in a hurry. But I'll hold you to it when you're free," Huang Wen seized the opportunity, sensing his hesitation.
Wang Bo thought for a moment and finally nodded in agreement.
When he arrived at the head teacher's office, the English teacher and Mr. Xu were already waiting. Mr. Xu sternly said, "Wang Bo, think carefully. It's not too late to admit your mistake. If the facts prove that your scores haven't improved, I will inform your parents of everything, including your deliberate concealment."
Wang Bo confidently replied, "I've thought it through, Mr. Cai. Give me the test paper, and I'll do it right now."
Mr. Cai looked at him seriously, adjusted his glasses, and picked up a new English test paper from the desk. "You have one hour."
Wang Bo smiled and took the paper. "It shouldn't take that long."
He found an empty desk and started answering the questions. Mr. Cai and Mr. Xu were drinking tea and playing with their phones nearby. After about twenty minutes, Wang Bo put down his pen and handed in the paper.
"Finished?" Mr. Cai frowned as he took the paper. "You didn't just randomly fill in the answers, did you?" But as he looked at the paper, he fell silent. As he checked each question, his frown deepened. He then took out the answer key to compare.
Mr. Xu glanced at Wang Bo and asked, "How many did he get wrong?"
Two minutes later, Mr. Cai looked up, his voice filled with disbelief. "All correct!" He didn't read the essay in detail, but he couldn't find any grammatical errors.
"Really all correct?" Mr. Xu frowned. "So Wang Bo has really improved, and quite rapidly?"
"It's unbelievable," Mr. Cai's face was awkward as he adjusted his glasses. She had been convinced that Wang Bo had cheated in some way, which was why she had insisted that Mr. Xu criticize and educate him. She never expected this result, which left her completely baffled.
"If you don't believe me, I can take another test," Wang Bo offered. "There's still enough time during the lunch break."
"That's not necessary," Mr. Xu raised his hand. "The teacher was wrong to doubt you first, but we were concerned and hoped you would understand. Don't get too cocky, though. It's good that your scores have improved, but you still need to work hard in other subjects. Alright, Wang Bo, you can go back to the classroom."
This matter was finally resolved. He had convinced the two teachers with his performance that he had genuinely earned his high scores. However, this experience taught him that in math, if there was an exam, he should hold back a bit and not aim for a perfect score every time.
Wang Bo had just learned this lesson when he faced a math test in the afternoon. This was a good opportunity to test the effects of his exchange from the previous night. As soon as he saw the questions, the solutions naturally came to mind. Many of the problem types were familiar to him, with only different parameters. With this confidence, he deliberately made a few mistakes, using common errors to make the mistakes seem reasonable. With such thorough preparation, he believed that even if his math scores improved, it wouldn't be too noticeable.
During the break in the afternoon, Wang Bo ran around the first-year classrooms, collecting three manuscripts. This was his only achievement for the school newspaper that day.
After school, he handed the three manuscripts to Jin Xiaoli and asked if the rehearsal time was still 7 PM. Jin Xiaoli said, "We agreed on 7 PM, but it doesn't matter if you come or not. Liu Yan and I have discussed it, and we'll practice the ensemble first. Your part can be added at any time. Thanks for running errands today. Go home early and do your homework."
It turned out that they had noticed Wang Bo's proficiency in the martial arts moves, which required little practice. Without him, they could practice in smaller segments, which would be more efficient. Jin Xiaoli and Liu Yan had already agreed that he didn't need to attend the rehearsals, but they didn't want him to be too idle, so they assigned him the errand. Given his good performance today, Jin Xiaoli was happy to give him a day off.
Hearing this, Wang Bo was very grateful, thanking them for their hard work. He thought that he could finally find time to buy a pair of dumbbells.
Leaving the classroom, Wang Bo met Huang Wen, who had been waiting outside. He greeted her naturally, and seeing that he was in a good mood, she asked, "What's so happy?"
He smiled and said it was nothing. The two walked down the stairs together, and on the way, Wang Bo asked, "Do we need to eat together today? I have to go home early and go out later."
Before Huang Wen could answer, her phone rang. She looked at the caller and answered, "Hello, Mom... Yes, school is over..." After a few words, she glanced at Wang Bo and said, "Yes, what's up... No special reason, just getting along well..." The other end said something, and her eyes lit up with surprise. "Really? Great, I'll come right back!"
After hanging up, Huang Wen apologized to Wang Bo, "Sorry, Wang Bo, I have to go home for dinner today. We'll meet another time. Bye!" She then ran off.
Wang Bo shook his head with a bitter smile. This girl was always so impulsive, doing whatever came to mind. Besides, he hadn't planned to eat with her anyway.
Wandering home alone, his mother was cooking, and his father was watching TV. Seeing him back, they were surprised by his early return and joked that they hadn't prepared his dinner.
He told his parents that he didn't need to practice today, but after dinner, he had to go out to buy a pair of dumbbells for home exercise, as instructed by the track and field team.
Since joining the track and field team, he hadn't seriously exercised except for the team's training sessions. His parents naturally didn't object to his enthusiasm. His father even secretly gave him 100 yuan, saying it was a private sponsorship and not to tell his mother.
Wang Bo immediately betrayed his father, telling his mother about the private money and the 100 yuan. His mother laughed and said, "Don't listen to your father. I told him to give you the 100 yuan. He's just trying to be nice. You, on the other hand, not only don't appreciate it, but you also tattle on him."
His father stood at the kitchen door, feigning indignation, saying that Wang Bo was ungrateful and recalling how hard he had worked to raise him when his mother was abroad. Despite this, the family laughed and chatted until dinner was ready.
Near Shuizhao Jingyuan, there was a large supermarket between Wang Bo's home and Guanglin High School. It was well-stocked and convenient for shopping. After dinner, Wang Bo went there to buy a pair of dumbbells and some household items as his mother had instructed.
He pushed a cart to find toilet paper and garbage bags. Passing by the women's products section, he saw a slender, fair-skinned beauty with long legs bending over, picking items with a basket.
As Wang Bo passed, the woman stood up, and their eyes met. He recognized her as his classmate, Lu Lu.
"What a coincidence, you're shopping too," Wang Bo said, glancing at her basket. He saw some snacks and a pile of women's products, including various brands of daily and night use items.
Lu Lu noticed his gaze, and her fair face turned red. She was buying these items for her dormitory mates, but she was too embarrassed to explain that they weren't for her.
Wang Bo also sensed the awkwardness and said, "Take your time. I'll go."
Lu Lu lowered her head and said nothing. Only after he left did she look back at him, and he also turned to look at her. Their eyes met briefly, and they quickly looked away, both feeling a bit guilty.
