Chapter 43 – Who schemed on who

Old Madam Shen took hold of Mama Li’s hand supporting herself into an upright position and picked up the teacup from the table, with no intention to drink but looking at the whirling tea dust, “Are you very familiar with Miss Liu?”

“We have met up several times. Sister Yunmeng is very kind and gentle.” Shen Ziqiao was beaming with a big smile and cordially responded, “I like her very much.”

Not only Old Madam Shen’s expression turned awful, even Sheng Peiyin had difficulty maintaining her smile.

These days Shen Ziqiao obviously had been repeatedly expressing her dislikes of Liu Yunmeng for explicitly fawning over her, but why had she simply changed her opinions to liking Liu Yunmeng very much when she was in front of Old Madam Shen?

Did this good-for-nothing realized something and intentionally deceiving her?

“What is so good about her, women her age are already mothers.” Old Madam Shen retorted with a snub. “I am tired.”

Sheng Peiyin forcefully smiled and uttered “We will not disturb Old Madam anymore then. Do have a good rest.”

Shen Ziqiao stood up with a lovely innocent smile and sweetly pitched in, “Grandmother, we will go back first and I will come back again tomorrow to pay my respect.”

More likely coming back just to vex her! Old Madam Shen inwardly snorted.

When Sheng Peiyin came out of De’an Courtyard, she hastened her steps calmly but felt an unprecedented anger boiling inside her. She felt like an idiot making jokes in front of Shen Ziqiao these past days. It turned out that this person had long thought of Liu Yunmeng’s virtuousness. As a matter of fact, all those loathing and dislikes were merely just to muddle through and to trick her.

Shen Ziqiao knew what Sheng Peiyin was angry about. If possible, she truly wanted to have no relation with this backstabbing female lead.

It was merely not the right time yet!

“Sister Sheng, sister Sheng, wait for me.” Shen Ziqiao sighed helplessly and feigned anxiousness chasing after her.

“Is there anything more that Shen’s third miss wants to say?” Sheng Peiyin stared at her coldly and asked.

Shen Ziqiao tugged at her hand and softly asked, “What’s with you?”

Sheng Peiyin laughed grimly, “What’s with me? I have been singing the red face* all this while, but in your mind you must have disdained me for actually talking maliciously behind Sister Yunmeng. Why did you pretend in front of me since you like her so much?”

“Sister Sheng, you misunderstood me. I truly don’t want her to be my stepmother.” Acting coquettishly, Shen Ziqiao laughed out, “You do know that all along I am an eyesore to our Old Madam, if she knows that I dislike Liu Yunmeng, she will definitely insist my father marry her. Now that I have said that I like her, Old Madam will certainly not like her anymore.”

They were standing and talking in the garden. Though there were no maidservant passing through, one cannot be sure who might be standing around the corner?

Sheng Peiyin hurriedly muffled her mouth, “What hogwash are you talking about? Should Old Madam hear what you just said, she will ruthlessly plank you.”

Feeling proud of herself, Shen Ziqiao raised her chin up and claimed, “I am not afraid, my father is coming home soon.”

Just then there was a swaying jade green skirt flashed past behind the rock garden.

“You are truly…..” Sheng Peiyin’s earlier chagrin turned to smile. She did know how much Old Madam Shen dislikes Shen Ziqiao, thus this explanation from Shen Ziqiao was not the least surprising. “You are always opposing your grandmother. You are not afraid she will be angry with you.”

Shen Ziqiao snorted out, “Isn’t she angry with me now? Whenever there is a fault, she will be long-winded about the demerit.”

“Old Madam is doing it for your own good.” Sheng Peiyin explained with a smile on her face.

“Then I begged her not to treat me well.” Shen Ziqiao pursed her lips. “Sister Sheng, are you still going to my place?”

Sheng Peiyin shook her head, “No, I have some errands to run. I will come to look for you again in two days’ time.”

“Okay.” Beaming with a smile, Shen Ziqiao accompanied her to Chui Hua door.

Shen Ziqiao then leisurely and carefreely walked back to Qiao Xin Courtyard after watching Sheng Peiyin boarded the horse-carriage, not even bothering to take the green glazed carriage.

She was truly a smart supporting character.

Sheng Peiyin wanted her to resent Liu Yunmeng, so she would fulfill her wish by showing her indignation. If she was to express her dislike, Old Madam would certainly make Shen Xiao marry Liu Yunmeng. Therefore, in order to prevent Sheng Peiyin from playing tricks in between, she would say she likes Liu Yunmeng very much when confronted by the Old Madam.

Those words of explanation to Sheng Peiyin in the garden just now, should have already been conveyed to the Old Madam.

As such, Old Madam would still like Liu Yunmeng to be her daughter-in-law.

Simply had no idea of Shen Xiao’s opinion.

Should probably like her.

Shen Ziqiao returned to Qian Xin Courtyard beaming with happiness, and continued practising her calligraphy.

Practicing calligraphy could cultivate one’s temperament, as what she now needed most was to have a calm mindset whenever she encountered any situation.

As expected, Old Madam Shen indeed found out from her trusted subordinate what Shen Ziqiao had spoken in the garden soon after. She laughed out angrily, “I would have not expected that third girl to have such an idea.”

Mama Li who was massaging Old Madam’s shoulder stated, “Third Miss’s words are always misleading, thus we can never discern and believe any of her words.”

“She can only come out with this little idea that leads nowhere.” Old Madam Shen relaxed her body and felt the stuffiness on her chest gradually dissipated. “I can see that Liu’s young miss will certainly not get along with her.”

“Wonder if the Master would like her?” That was what Mama Li most worried about, Shen Xiao refusing to remarry just like what had happened before.

Old Madam Shen’s face darkened, “It has already been so many years, he still can’t let go and want to stand guard over her memorial tablet.”

“Old Madam…..” Mama Li softly admonished her as it would be bad if these words were to be spread out.

“Is there any news from the Qi’s?” Old Madam Shen would feel absolutely exasperated whenever she recalled that short-lived daughter-in-law, thus she changed the topic of the conversation.

Mama Li responded, “Duke Anguo does not consent and wants Madam Qi to choose another.”

Old Madam Shen’s lips sneered with sarcasm, “He was born noble all this time but in the end was still a fool. What kind of good girl does he wish to marry? If the girl is chosen, she will not want to marry a fool and ruin her own lives.”

“That’s right. Duke Anguo does not even gauge the quality of his own son.” Mama Li added.

“We are not in a hurry. Madam Qi is shrewd and potent, she will reply to us sooner or later.” Old Madam Shen had been judging people her whole life, she could already fathom Little Gu Shi’s temperament with just a glance.

Mama Li then looked at Old Madam Shen’s complexion and discerned that her mood was seemingly slightly better, hence she cautiously remarked, “Old Madam, when Third Miss gets married, would she want back Madam’s dowries?”

Hearing that, Old Madam Shen’s expression changed and her brows tightly knitted.

Pan Shi’s dowries were not a small figure after all…..
