Shen Ziqiao had someone fetch her the Jinchuang drug ( medication for incised wounds ) as she returned to Qian Xin Courtyard with Hong Yu and her sister Hong Ying, personally applying the medication on Hong Ying’s face.

Hong Ying, overwhelmed by this unexpected act of love, tried to evade Shen Ziqiao’s hand, “Third Miss, Nubi….Nubi does not deserve this.”

“Sit down!” Shen Ziqiao tugged on her hand, holding her down where she sat. “What is there to be undeserving of, you got slapped because of me. I am extremely happy to have you, a maidservant who is so devoted to protecting their master.”

“Third Miss, allow Nubi to handle this.” Hong Yu walked over to take the Jinchuang drug from Shen Ziqiao.

Shen Ziqiao looked at the two sisters. She initially thought both of them were nonsensical, to quarrel with Old Madam’s confidential on her behalf, but when she saw Hong Ying, though slapped red and swollen, continued to retort against Old wife Li for herself, she was deeply touched.

Until Hong Ying defended her today, she had not the slightest notion of the disparity in social hierarchies between master and servant implied, as a result, after becoming Shen Ziqiao these past few days, she did not put too much thought of the maidservants’ attitudes. But now she understood that as long as she wished to survive here, she would need to change herself and alter her past vulnerable stance.

Who was Shen Ziqiao? She was but the legitimate legal daughter* of the Shen family, Shen Xiao’s beloved daughter. There was no way she should live an oppressed life, bullied by any Tom, Dick, or Harry. If she could not even protect herself, who was she to count on to protect her?

*(T/N: legitimate legal daughter – 嫡女 Dí nǚ means the formal wife’s daughter as opposed to being that of a concubine’s)

How was she going to eliminate Sheng Peiyin, without first securing her respective status in the Shen household?

“From now on, both of you shall stay and serve me by my side.” Shen Ziqiao stated softly. “Rest well Hong Ying, return to work… I mean, come and serve me, only when the swelling on your face subsides.”

Both Hong Yu and Hong Ying stood dumbfounded. They were not even second-ranked maidservants, how could they possibly wait upon Third Miss by her side?

Accidentally overhearing Shen Ziqiao’s words as she raised the door-curtain to enter the room, Cui Ping turned rigid momentarily, “Third Miss, your meals have been made.”

Without giving her so much as a glance, she murmured for Hong Yu to assist Hong Ying out.

“Third Miss, allow Nubi to serve you your meal.” Cui Ping found herself in a perturbed state of mind, wondering if Shen Ziqiao intends to drive herself, Cui Hong and several of the other maidservants out.

They were initially assigned to Third Miss’ side by Old Madam, but now seeing that Third Miss even dares to drive out Old wife Li, it was difficult to say what was to happen to the lot of them.

“Don’t bother.” Shen Ziqiao stated indifferently. “Just put it down.”

A wave of fear washed over Cui Ping, “Third Miss, it is not that Nubi did not want to go to the kitchen, it was merely by chance that Nubi was occupied, so Hong Ying had gone instead.”

“En.” Shen Ziqiao nodded, unconcerned, “Noted.”

That’s all ? Looking at Shen Ziqiao’s expression, Cui Ping felt as if she was being held down by an invisible force.

Was this the same Third Miss who only knew to make big fusses?

Perturbed, Cui Ping retreated.

Outside, Cui Hong, also stationed at Shen Ziqiao’s side by Old Madam, came up by Cui Ping’s ears and whispered, “How did it go?”

“She’s letting the two sisters serve her by her side…” Cui Ping whispered back.

Cui Hong urged in retrospect, “Let’s report this to Old Madam.”

“And what will reporting do? Did you not see how she didn’t even give Old wife Li any face? And did Old Madam come out and say anything?” Cui Ping spat out, diffident as she recalled how Third Miss had treated Old wife Li.

“Could it be because the Master is coming back soon?” It’s been almost a year since Shen Xiao and Shen Zikai left home, they ought to return soon.

Cui Ping shook her head lightly , “Even if it is due to the Master returning, it is unlikely that Third Miss could… this is completely different from before.”

“Then, then could it be that someone is secretly teaching her?” Cui Hong asked, astonished.

Shen Ziqiao was very close with Sheng Peiyin. Cui Ping was bewildered, “I’m going to look for Mama Li.”
