Chapter 26 – Resentment and Indignation (2)

Old wife Li looked at her mother-in-law in tears.

“Why haven’t you gone to cook for Third Miss?” Mama Li coldly reprimanded, glaring at her.

“Mama Li, what happened to Third Miss?” Cui Ping whispered under her breath, as she walked up to Li Mama.

“What happened? She’s ready to spread her wings!” Mama Li sneered, cinching the handkerchief in her hands tautly, she pushed down the discontentment and indignation within her and turned to leave.

Cui Ping was left to ponder over Mama Li’s words where she stood dazedly.

Mama Li had already returned to De’an Courtyard when Old Madam heard her personal maidservant’s, Cui Liu’s, words. The lighting in the room was rather dim, so Old Madam’s facial expressions were not clearly visible save her eyes, which were blazing brightly.

“Old Madam.” Mama Li held in her anger and calmly walked up to stand by Old Madam Shen.

Old Madam Shen slightly lifted her head and Cui Liu retreated with a curtsy.

“She stood up for her own maidservant?” Old Madam Shen closed her eyes, as if she was meditating.

In a low voice, Mama Li replied, “It was Xuexin’s fault for not abiding with the rules.”

Xuexin was Old wife Li’s given name.

“She’s even standing out for her own maidservants now… not to mention her choice of words…” Old Madam Shen chuckled, her hoarse voice brought out a hint of frost from the quiet room, “Who has allowed her?”

“Could it be that Eldest Young Master wrote to Third Miss?” Mama Li suggested softly.

“Even if it was so, all she has done when Laoda* and Kai ge’r* were at home was to completely disregard my words. She had never dared to put herself forward pompously for her maidservants, let alone be bold enough to beat up my people….” Old Madam Shen retorted.

*(T/N: Laoda – 老大 ; the eldest child)

*(T/N: ge’r – 哥儿 ; boy)

Recalling Cui Liu’s words from moments before, Old Madam Shen’s expression turned cold.

Suppressed fury seethed out as Mama Li thought back to how Shen Ziqiao had not given her any face in front of others, “Third Miss must be suppressed, Old Madam, before she’s given the idea that she’s allowed to oppose you.”

“No need. Let her run wild. In fact I would like to see what kind of tricks she has up her sleeves.” Old Madam Shen slowly opened her eyes, the corners of her lips tilting to form a contemptuous smile.

“Who knows what the Master is thinking, indulging the Third Miss so much she can no longer be controlled. Even the Eldest Young Master dotes on her as if she’s treasure.” Mama Li could not help but feel agitated as she imagined how much more rampant the Third Miss would become when the Master and Eldest Young Master returned.

This had always been a touchy subject for the Old Madam, gritting her teeth, “This is all because of that despicable woman… Had she not bewitched Laoda until he had lost his sense of direction, he would have remarried by now! This Third yatou* is too much like her!”

*(T/N: yatou – 丫头 ; used either as a term of endearment, or a depreciating way to address a girl)

Mama Li nodded, if it were not for the fact that Shen Ziqiao looked so much like the deceased main Madam, and that the Master had yet to forget his deceased wife, thus unwilling to remarry, fearing of bringing grievances to Shen Ziqiao.

Old Madam deeply exhaled, “Assistant Minister Liu’s sister is turning twenty this year. She has yet to be betrothed due to her overly high expectations, it seems like the Liu family has the intentions to marry Miss Liu into our household.”

“This… this Miss Liu is renowned in the capital as a talented lady, definitely not lacking in any way compared to the late Madam back then. Perhaps the Master will take a liking to her.” Mama Li implied joyfully.

“Pick a date, let’s meet this Lady Liu.” Old Madam Shen replied. How could a parent not know of their son’s intentions, the Master might not have even the slightest inclination in remarrying.

Mama Li remarked, “The Third Miss must not be allowed to cause trouble any longer.”

Old Madam Shen snorted, “As if she would dare!”
