It seemed everyone was waiting for the holiday. On the night Murphy announced it, most people chose to leave the northern basin of San Fernando Valley. By the next morning, only Murphy, Carey Mulligan, James Franco, and a private tutor remained in the independent house.
Murphy needed to make minor adjustments to the shooting schedule based on the problems encountered during the previous shooting; Carey Mulligan's guardian in Los Angeles, Julianne Faires, was out of town, so she had nowhere to go and didn't plan to return; the private tutor was going to use the weekend to give her extra lessons; since Carey Mulligan didn't leave, James Franco had no reason to leave either.
On Saturday morning, after getting up, washing up, and eating a quick breakfast, Murphy felt a headache that he hadn't experienced in a long time. It wasn't as severe as the splitting pain he had when he first arrived, but it was still quite uncomfortable. He intended to sit in the room and read the shooting plan, but he couldn't focus for more than two hours. He decided to go downstairs and take a walk.
Opening the door of the independent house, Murphy took a deep breath of fresh air. The breeze from the lake carried a unique fragrance, which slightly improved his spirits.
He gazed at the distant small lake and the clear blue sky, just about to turn and walk into the woods behind the house, when the door was pushed open from the inside. A middle-aged woman in a business suit came out first, followed by Carey Mulligan.
"Hello, Mrs. Morrison," Murphy greeted the middle-aged woman, looking at the leather bag she was holding, and asked, "Are you preparing to leave?"
The private tutor, who was responsible for Carey Mulligan's on-set education, hadn't spoken yet, but Carey Mulligan quickly said, "Yes, Murphy. Mrs. Morrison has some urgent matters and needs to go back to the city."
"Ah, I see..." Murphy nodded and asked the middle-aged woman, "Do you need a ride?"
"No, thank you," the middle-aged woman politely declined. "Someone will pick me up in town."
Watching the somewhat stern private tutor leave, Murphy rubbed his forehead and prepared to continue his walk in the woods. Carey Mulligan followed behind, curiously asking, "What are you doing?"
"Taking a break," Murphy said, circling around the house and waiting for Carey Mulligan to catch up. "Just walking around here."
He suddenly remembered that he hadn't explored the town where the small basin was located. "I'll go to town in a bit. Do you want to come?"
Carey Mulligan shook her head. "Mrs. Morrison left me some homework, and I still need to rehearse."
She pointed to the woods behind the house. "I can walk with you here."
They walked slowly along the path in the woods, with Carey Mulligan mostly appearing innocent, beautiful, and cute, especially in front of Murphy, where she always hid her rebellious side.
Murphy and Carey Mulligan walked around the woods and returned to the back door of the house. Carey Mulligan opened the rarely used back door, stood there, and asked, "Do you want to come in?"
"You go back first," Murphy shook his head, pointing in the direction Mrs. Morrison had left. "I'll go to town and be back around noon. Do you want me to bring lunch?"
Carey Mulligan thought for a moment. "A vegetarian pizza would be great."
With that, she gave Murphy a sweet smile, turned, and walked into the house, closing the door behind her.
Murphy gently rubbed his head, thinking about work as he followed the path toward the main road.
The shooting had been going poorly. On one hand, he lacked experience as a new director, and on the other, the other crew members were mediocre. However, he didn't fire them; finding people who were both cheap and capable in Hollywood wasn't easy.
Fortunately, Carey Mulligan and James Franco were improving, proving that his persistence was justified.
James Franco? Murphy suddenly stopped, realizing he had overlooked something important.
There were originally four people in the house: himself, the private tutor, Carey Mulligan, and James Franco.
Now, he was preparing to go to the town in the valley, and the private tutor had already gone to town, leaving only Carey Mulligan and James Franco in the house!
Without hesitation, Murphy turned and quickly walked back the way he came.
Indeed, he sometimes resorted to any means to achieve his goals, like tricking Carey Mulligan and James Franco into being the lead actors, but that didn't mean he wanted to see an innocent and cute girl fall victim to a pedophile.
After spending time with James Franco, Murphy knew he had a peculiar personality and a sense of boundaries, but it was hard to say if he would do something inappropriate. Men could be extremely dangerous at times.
It took Murphy only three minutes to return the ten-minute journey. He quickly walked to the back door of the house, entered without even closing the door.
His soft-soled sneakers made almost no sound on the floor due to his speed. Murphy listened carefully and faintly heard Carey Mulligan's clear voice, which was calm and soothing, interspersed with giggles.
He exhaled softly, calmed down, and slowed his pace, walking through the corridor from the back door to the living room. As he was about to turn into the living room, he saw James Franco and Carey Mulligan sitting on two facing single sofas, holding their scripts, seemingly focused on rehearsing.
"Are those photos all taken here?" Carey Mulligan looked at James Franco with admiration. "They are amazing. How did you do it?"
James Franco's gaze remained fixed on Carey Mulligan, seemingly completely transformed into Jeff. "Do you want to know? You can come with me."
As he said this, he magically pulled out a box of chocolates from behind him and offered it to Carey Mulligan. "See what this is."
"Oh!" Carey Mulligan exclaimed excitedly, dropping her script and taking the chocolates. "This is my favorite."
Murphy leaned against the wall at the corner, seeing this scene, and didn't rush out. He knew Carey Mulligan well; she had no good impression of James Franco, and her excitement was clearly feigned.
He had already returned and wasn't afraid that James Franco would do anything. Instead, he was curious about Carey Mulligan. What was her purpose in acting this way?
James Franco pointed to the box of chocolates. "Why don't you try one?"
Carey Mulligan put down the chocolates and picked up her script again. "Let's wait until the rehearsal is over. We can rehearse other scenes."
"Which one?" James Franco asked.
Carey Mulligan gave a cute smile. "Haley's first time subduing Jeff."
