PS: The power was out last night, so I'm catching up now.
...
“A murder! A murder!” A loud cry suddenly shattered the night’s silence, and the previously calm police station immediately fell into chaos. The long period of peace had made them forget their roles.
“What are they doing!” Chief Wu Bin was startled awake and quickly walked toward the holding area. In his plan, the story was supposed to unfold differently, with the suspect seizing a gun and killing a police officer, who would then be shot dead by the police. The matter would be handled quietly, without all this commotion.
“A murder! The suspect has killed someone!” A middle-aged police officer, wearing gloves, stumbled out of the holding room and collided with Wu Bin, who had rushed over.
Wu Bin was furious, but he didn’t have time to blame the officer. He asked, “What happened!”
“He... he... he killed An! Killed him! Shot him in the heart!” The gloved officer stammered, his face full of fear, and he didn’t even feel the pain from the gunshot wound on his shoulder.
“What!” Wu Bin’s face changed. This wasn’t how his script was supposed to go. But then he thought, isn’t this better? Li Mang had killed a police officer and still had a gun, making him a dangerous individual. Wu Bin could justifiably shoot him! As for the dead police officer, he could just pay the family a sum of money.
Human life is indeed valuable, but they had plenty of money.
Wu Bin originally intended to take action himself, but his hand paused on the gun holster as he suddenly remembered his family’s warning: This person is very strong.
By now, other officers had arrived. Wu Bin’s expression turned serious, and he ordered loudly, “Surround this room. If anyone inside tries to break out, shoot to kill!”
“Yes!”
The iron door inside had already been locked by Li Mang. He leaned against the wall, his face pale, especially when he saw the body on the ground. His hands and feet felt cold.
The man deserved to die, and Li Mang didn’t feel guilty. After all, those who kill will be killed. However, this was his first human life, and the blood on the ground made him feel a deep shock. His heart trembled. No matter how you looked at it, this was a human life, and the blood was real.
Li Mang could hear the commotion outside but was helpless. He wasn’t strong enough to withstand machine gun fire, nor did he have the ability to dodge bullets. If they broke in, his only option was to retreat into the Shan Hai Jing space for safety.
As time passed, the police had set up layers of security outside. Seeing the opportunity ripe, Wu Bin could no longer hold back and coldly ordered, “On my command, attack...”
“Stop!” A hurried set of footsteps approached, and a shout interrupted Wu Bin’s command.
Li Mang silently returned the Shan Hai Jing to his heart and continued to wait. He vaguely guessed that the power of Yehuang was at work. It wasn’t that they were late; he just hadn’t expected these people to be so ruthless and want to kill him. This left him puzzled. Were the young masters of today so petty?
The sudden change made Wu Bin’s eyes twitch. He turned around and saw a middle-aged man approaching. He was no stranger to this man and quickly walked up to him, respectfully saying, “Secretary Tang, why are you here!”
The man was none other than the provincial party secretary, Tang Heng!
Wu Hong was the governor, and his position was naturally lower than Tang Heng’s, but this was only on the surface. Due to the Wu family’s special status in Chengdu, Tang Heng, despite his higher rank, could never overpower Wu Hong, the local strongman, and his power was always overshadowed by the Wu family.
But Tang Heng was still the secretary, and even though his power was limited, he couldn’t be underestimated. His sudden arrival here made Wu Bin feel uneasy.
“If I hadn’t come, wouldn’t you have torn the sky apart?” Unlike his usual scholarly demeanor, Tang Heng was unusually assertive today, knowing that Wu Bin was a relative of the Wu family but giving him no face.
“...” Wu Bin’s expression stiffened, and his face showed anger. Although his rank was lower than Tang Heng’s, he was a direct member of the Wu family. Tang Heng’s lack of respect was a slap in the face to the Wu family.
Before Wu Bin could speak, Tang Heng continued, “Bring Wu Bin in for arrest and hand him over to the disciplinary committee for investigation!”
“What!” Wu Bin was shocked. He looked behind Tang Heng and indeed saw the presence of the disciplinary committee. Clearly, Tang Heng was well-prepared. But what gave Tang Heng such confidence? Wu Bin couldn’t figure it out even as the handcuffs were placed on him.
“Secretary Tang, there must be some misunderstanding!” Wu Bin’s anger was no longer hidden, and his eyes were bloodshot as he stared at Tang Heng.
“Wu Bin, the disciplinary committee has long had evidence of your crimes. They just lacked an opportunity. Surrender!” Tang Heng said something meaningful in Wu Bin’s ear and then continued walking forward, ordering the police in front of the holding room to put away their weapons.
Tang Heng bowed slightly and respectfully said to the iron door of the holding room, “Secretary Li, I am Tang Heng, and I am here to take you away by order of my superiors.”
“...” Wu Bin looked at Tang Heng in disbelief, feeling that the heavens were playing a joke on him. Secretary Li? What kind of position was this? Even the provincial party secretary had to be respectful? It wasn’t April Fool’s Day.
He had hit a steel plate!
Wu Bin finally realized this and wanted to notify Wu Hong, but his hand was stopped as soon as he moved, and even the phone in his pocket was confiscated, making his face turn pale. If he had still hoped for his family’s rescue, he now felt the end was near. No wonder Tang Heng was so assertive today; it turned out that Li Mang’s identity was not ordinary!
“Creak.” The door of the holding room opened, and Li Mang calmly walked out with a suitcase, scanning the surroundings. He nodded slightly to Tang Heng and then directly ordered, “Secretary Tang, all present must be strictly monitored. Until further instructions, they must not contact anyone, and no one must be told about today’s events. Otherwise, they will be charged with leaking state secrets!”
But considering the Wu family’s status in Chengdu, Li Mang added, “This isn’t enough. Transfer them to the Yanjing authorities immediately!”
“Everything will be done as Secretary Li says!” Tang Heng immediately promised.
“...” The scene was silent. Both the police officers and Tang Heng’s people stared at Li Mang with wide eyes, all thinking the same thing: What is this young man’s identity? He’s terrifying!
A second-generation red? A prince from Yanjing? Various guesses ran through their minds, but one person didn’t think so: Wu Bin.
He knew Tang Heng’s character. Despite his scholarly demeanor, he wasn’t rigid and wouldn’t be so respectful even to a second-generation red. Wu Bin also noticed that Tang Heng’s respect for Li Mang wasn’t fake but rather like a mortal’s reverence for a deity. This realization made Wu Bin shiver, and he vaguely felt that the Wu family’s end was near.
“Leave this to you. Remember not to leak my information.” Li Mang felt exhausted and wanted to leave without any formalities.
This was Yehuang, an existence above all secular institutions and powers. Although Li Mang didn’t like such corrupt power, he couldn’t deny the feeling of being on top.
Stopping in front of Wu Bin, Li Mang suddenly punched him in the face under his nervous gaze—“Puh!”
“Cough... cough...” Wu Bin’s face turned red, and a trace of blood appeared at the corner of his mouth. If Li Mang hit him again, he wasn’t sure he wouldn’t pass out. He quickly looked to Tang Heng for help.
However, Secretary Tang simply turned his head away, pretending not to see. It was hard to imagine such a mischievous act from Tang Heng.
“You deserve to die!” Li Mang’s light words reached Wu Bin’s ears, and with a pale face, he started to leave, leaving behind a legend.
