"Mr. Wang, this painting is called 'The King's Farm.' It was your father's favorite, and he left it to you. I hope you will take good care of it," Mr. Wang continued.
Yi Xingchen's eyes flickered, and he asked, "Is this painting valuable?"
Yi Xingchen was not a rigid person. Regardless of his father's expectations, he believed that only attending university could change his fate. Moreover, this was his mother's wish before she passed away.
"Oh, no, as far as I know, your father bought this painting from a bankrupt private museum in Eastern Europe for about 1,000 euros," Mr. Wang sighed. He could see Yi Xingchen's thoughts and had to interrupt, "If you were in Europe, you might be able to sell it for a few hundred euros, but in China, I doubt you could get even 100 yuan."
Yi Xingchen couldn't possibly sell the painting in Europe; he couldn't even afford the travel expenses. At this point, he had no hope left.
Yi Xingchen silently picked up 'The King's Farm' and carefully examined it.
It was a very ordinary watercolor landscape, with conventional lines and simple elements. In the painting, there was a small castle in the distance and a green field nearby, which looked pleasant, no wonder his father liked it.
However, the painting didn't even have the artist's name marked on it.
Yi Xingchen thought for a moment and asked, "Mr. Wang, my tuition fees..."
But Mr. Wang didn't let Yi Xingchen finish, interrupting him, "After Mr. Yi's passing, his private account was immediately frozen by the Yi family. Therefore, only the first month's living expenses of 1,000 yuan will be transferred to your account. In the future, you won't receive any more money."
Yi Xingchen understood Mr. Wang's meaning. He no longer had any expectations and, holding the painting, got up to say goodbye, "Thank you, Mr. Wang! Goodbye."
Seeing Yi Xingchen's dejected look, Mr. Wang softened a bit and said, "You might consider borrowing some money to pay for your tuition. Once you're in university, you can apply for a student loan from the bank. If you need any loan documents, I can help you, and I won't charge you anything."
Yi Xingchen felt a bit moved. No matter what, Mr. Wang had done his best. Yi Xingchen bowed sincerely, "Thank you."
Mr. Wang's suggestion was a good one. Yi Xingchen didn't want to give up on attending university, which was his mother's wish.
Yi Xingchen was not ungrateful and didn't continue to trouble Mr. Wang. He picked up the painting and left Mr. Wang's office.
Stepping out of the law firm into the sunlight, Yi Xingchen still felt a bit dazed. Such a dramatic turn of events had happened to him. His mind was in chaos, and he even blamed his father for recognizing him so late and then leaving the world so soon!
Feeling disoriented, Yi Xingchen walked forward, thinking of crossing the street to catch a bus.
Preoccupied with his thoughts, Yi Xingchen didn't notice the traffic light change.
The red light was already on, but Yi Xingchen didn't stop and continued to cross the street. Just as he reached the middle of the road, a speeding car hit him head-on.
There was a loud crash!
To the onlookers, a traffic accident had occurred, and a teenager who had run the red light was thrown into the air.
Pain surged through his body, and in the midst of the surrounding cries, Yi Xingchen realized he had been hit by a car. Instinctively, he clung tightly to the painting. Then, his vision suddenly went black, and he felt a surge in his throat, spitting out a mouthful of blood onto 'The King's Farm.'
Am I going to die? Well, Dad, Mom, I'm coming to see you.
At that moment, Yi Xingchen felt a sense of relief.
After an unknown amount of time, Yi Xingchen felt a surge of energy enter his body, and he slowly regained consciousness.
"Come to your senses... don't die... sniff sniff..."
A woman was crying, and Yi Xingchen slowly opened his eyes, seeing a beautiful face right in front of him.
"That's great, are you okay?" The beautiful girl, with tears streaming down her face, looked terrified.
Yi Xingchen slightly moved his eyes and saw the car parked in the middle of the road. He remembered that he had run the red light and caused the accident, so logically, he should be fully responsible. Thinking of this, Yi Xingchen immediately dismissed the idea of seeking compensation. He slowly got up, gripped the painting, and breathed a sigh of relief, wanting to leave.
"I'll take you to the hospital!" the girl said, clearly worried.
"No, I'm fine," Yi Xingchen shook his head. He no longer felt any pain and was afraid of the hospital expenses, so he insisted on leaving.
"But I hit you, and you flew so far," the girl said, both worried and sad.
"I don't need your compensation!" Yi Xingchen's mood was not good, and he just wanted to leave quickly.
At this moment, the cars behind the girl's car started honking, urging her to move. The girl, unable to get Yi Xingchen into her car, became anxious. She thought for a moment, took out a stack of money from her bag, and without counting, stuffed it into Yi Xingchen's arms, saying, "I'm very sorry, I have to go now. If you don't want to go with me, I won't force you. Here's some money; you should go to the hospital for a check-up. If it's not enough, call me." She then hurried back to the driver's seat.
Yi Xingchen was stunned, feeling the money in his arms, which was not a small amount. He looked at the girl in the driver's seat, a kind girl he had never met before.
An hour later, Yi Xingchen returned to his small rented room and lay on his bed.
Looking at the empty room, Yi Xingchen sighed again. Not long ago, he had dreamed of having a place of his own. Thinking of this, he remembered his university tuition fees, which made him feel a headache.
The next moment, Yi Xingchen thought of the money the girl had given him and quickly took it out to count.
When Yi Xingchen finished counting, he was shocked. The girl had given him a substantial amount, 3,500 yuan. Adding the 1,000 yuan living expenses he already had, Yi Xingchen was pleasantly surprised to find that he had enough for his university enrollment fees.
Yi Xingchen was filled with gratitude for the girl. This was a timely help, and he didn't consider it compensation but a form of assistance.
If there was an opportunity in the future, he would thank her properly, he thought.
With his university tuition fees resolved, Yi Xingchen's sorrow lessened. He wanted to look at the only legacy his father had left him—'The King's Farm.'
Yi Xingchen picked up the painting, intending to examine it carefully, but he was shocked.
