Having already learned the details about Ferren from Xie Laobu, Xie Yixin also rushed to the police academy on the day of the graduation ceremony. When she heard that the Honor Baton was awarded to a probationary inspector named Huang Le, she almost jumped up on the spot.
Xie Yixin was certain that in a physical contest, Huang Le would definitely not be Ferren's match. As for the written test, would a Harvard double master's degree holder lose to an inspector who had risen from the ranks?
After the ceremony, Xie Yixin privately approached the police academy leadership, intending to speak up for Ferren.
"Principal Zhou, I want to ask why PI18166 did not receive the Honor Baton?"
If it were anyone else questioning him, Police Academy Principal Zhou Qiguang might not have answered, but since Xie Yixin was the daughter of his superior, Xie Jiquan, he felt compelled to respond.
"18166? Oh, you mean that Fei, Fei..."
"Fei Ren!" Xie Yixin replied with a cold expression.
Zhou Qiguang found it hard to understand Xie Yixin's indignation. He gave her a meaningful look and then smiled. "Niece, Fei Ren's grades were also among the best in this batch of students. Unfortunately, compared to Huang Le, his scores in all subjects were just a bit lower, so the Honor Baton couldn't be awarded to him."
"How is that possible?!" Xie Yixin found it hard to believe Zhou's explanation.
Zhou Qiguang shrugged and spread his hands. "The grades of this batch of students have already been summarized and sent to Sir Xie. If you don't believe me, you can ask Sir Xie when you get back!" With that, he ignored Xie Yixin, waved his hand, and walked away.
Xie Yixin was seething with anger but didn't dare to call out to Zhou again. She could only stand there, fuming. Fortunately, Ren Gaofeng came over and asked, "Yixin, what are you doing? Alan has already received his employment notice and is about to leave. Aren't you going to see him off?"
Xie Yixin pouted. "What's the point of seeing him? I'll see him at work next week anyway." Despite her tough words, her feet involuntarily moved toward the academy's main gate.
Seeing Xie Yixin's contradictory actions, Ren Gaofeng couldn't help but chuckle as he followed her. When they reached the gate, they saw Ferren already standing next to a Rolls-Royce on the other side of the road.
Old Ren quickly pulled Xie Yixin back and speculated, "Damn, is Alan planning to get into that car?"
Xie Yixin shook off Ren Gaofeng's hand. "Why don't we go over and say hello to find out?" As she spoke, a well-dressed young man in a suit and glasses got out of the Rolls-Royce and gave Ferren a bear hug with a smile.
Recognizing the young man, Ren Gaofeng's eyes widened in surprise. "Superman Li Zekai?!"
Xie Yixin was also taken aback by the sudden appearance of the city's celebrity and didn't know how to react.
Ferren had already noticed Ren Gaofeng on the other side of the road. After hugging Li Zekai, he immediately waved to Old Ren and then got into the car, driving away.
Once the Rolls-Royce was out of sight, Ren Gaofeng teased, "Damn, Alan is really deep! The way he interacts with Superman Li must be extraordinary. Congratulations, Xie Bao, you've caught a golden turtle!"
Xie Yixin's face turned red with anger. "I've told you countless times not to call me Bao!" She reached out to pinch Ren Gaofeng's arm.
Ren Gaofeng easily dodged and fled. Xie Yixin, annoyed that he had exposed her thoughts, immediately chased after him. Fortunately, there were no other students around, or it would have become another piece of gossip the next day.
In the car, Ferren asked teasingly, "Brother Li, how did you have the time to come pick me up today?"
Li Zekai, seemingly oblivious to Ferren's sarcasm, smiled. "Actually, I'm incredibly busy, but I took this opportunity to relax a bit!"
"Is it really that simple?" Ferren raised an eyebrow.
"It's that simple. I came just to pick you up. Isn't that enough of a reason?" Li Zekai said with a grin. "Of course, my dad has a message for you."
Ferren ignored Li Zekai's shamelessness and asked, "What message?"
"Harvest is in, take it if you want... What does that mean?" Li Zekai repeated his father's words and then asked the question that had been on his mind.
Ferren glanced at Li Zekai. "You don't understand?"
"I don't understand!" Li Zekai shook his head vigorously.
Ferren's face showed a hint of regret. "That means your old man doesn't want you to understand. Kids, don't pry too much." This comment made the driver in the front seat almost slam on the brakes. Li Zekai looked embarrassed and awkward.
Ferren patted Li Zekai's shoulder. "Let's go to Uncle Li's place now. We can meet him together, and everything will be clear."
Li Zekai was delighted and immediately instructed the driver to head to Central.
Upon arriving at the Li family company, Li Zekai's face was like a pass. Ferren and he went straight to Li Chaoren's office without stopping.
After knocking and entering, Li Chaoren saw Ferren and complained, "Alan, you didn't even let me know you were coming. I could have welcomed you!"
Ferren joked, "If Uncle Li personally welcomed me, wouldn't I be on the front page tomorrow?"
Li Chaoren laughed heartily. "With the results you've achieved, I think you could be on the front page for a month!"
After the pleasantries, they sat down. Li Zekai, eager to hear about the "harvest," immediately started pouring tea.
Ferren took the teacup from Li Zekai. "Brother Li, stop fussing. Sit down and listen to what Uncle Li and I have to say!"
Seeing that Ferren, the leader, didn't object, Li Chaoren was happy to let his son listen. Li Zekai sat down with a serious expression, like a model student.
Getting to the point, Ferren said straightforwardly, "Uncle Li, after taxes, how much American wheat did we harvest this time?"
Li Chaoren didn't speak but made a gesture with his hands, first a three, then a five.
Ferren nodded slightly. "A little over ten percent profit, that's pretty good."
Li Zekai was confused. "Dad, Alan, what do these three and five mean? What riddle are you two playing?"
Ferren made a shushing gesture, and he and Li Chaoren exchanged a smile. Ferren wrote on a piece of paper, "Multiply 35 by a hundred billion USD."
Seeing the words, Li Zekai exclaimed, "Thirty-five..." He quickly covered his mouth, realizing his mistake.
Ferren burned the note in the ashtray and smirked. "Brother Li, don't be so surprised. Look, Uncle Li and I aren't surprised at all!"
Li Zekai rolled his eyes, showing a rare expression of disbelief, as if to say, "Can I compare to my dad? Can I compare to you, this freak?" Fortunately, he didn't say it out loud, or Li Chaoren would have scolded him for being unambitious, lacking the mindset of surpassing his elders.
Ferren didn't care about Li Zekai's thoughts and said to Li Chaoren, "Uncle Li, according to our agreed commission plan, I need to take two percent of the wheat first, plus the three percent I contributed, which should be this number!" He gestured 1450.
Li Chaoren smiled. "The wheat is already prepared. Just get your warehouse ready, and I can deliver it anytime."
Ferren immediately wrote down two anonymous UBS accounts and handed them to Li Chaoren. "These are the warehouses. You decide what to do, Uncle Li!" Li Chaoren took the note and said, "Alright, the wheat will be delivered within ten days."
"I'll wait for your good news, Uncle Li. I'll take my leave now." Ferren stood up.
Li Chaoren also stood. "I'll see you out."
Ferren waved his hand. "No, I don't want to be on the front page!"
Li Chaoren smiled and didn't insist, watching Ferren leave the office. He then patted the somewhat dazed Li Zekai and said, "Zekai, what are you thinking about?"
"Huh? Oh... Hey, Dad, where did Alan go?" Li Zekai asked, his words disjointed.
Seeing his son still not fully recovered, Li Chaoren felt a bit frustrated. Comparing his son to the calm and composed Ferren, he found his son lacking in both mindset and maturity.
If Ferren knew what Li Chaoren was thinking, he would have scoffed. Li Zekai might be calm and composed, but if he were thrown into the cycle space for five or six missions and still came out alive and sane, he would truly be impressive!
Feeling Li Chaoren's gaze, Li Zekai felt a bit uneasy and quickly dialed Ferren's phone number.
Seeing this, Li Chaoren became even more frustrated. "Why are you calling? Alan has already left."
Li Zekai's breath caught, but he still asked bravely, "Dad, what's the deal with that wheat?"
Li Chaoren thought for a moment and decided to tell his son. "After last year's Mid-Autumn Festival, Alan called from the U.S. and discussed..." He wrote three words on a piece of paper: "Short NASDAQ."
Seeing the words, Li Zekai was stunned, finally understanding why his father and Ferren had to use a code. They had essentially robbed the Americans, and they were being cautious about eavesdroppers.
The U.S. internet bubble had been evident since 1995, but it hadn't burst until early March 2000, when the NASDAQ index reached over 5100 points. It then plummeted, falling to around 2000 points, with a market value loss of three trillion dollars. Ferren and Li Chaoren's profit of thirty-five billion was not much by comparison.
By Monday, Ferren was still not used to the large bed in the Shallow Water Bay mansion, so he got up early. After a morning workout, the two Japanese maids he had specially hired had already prepared his breakfast.
After washing up and eating a bit, Ferren dressed neatly with the maids' help, put the employment notice in his pocket, and drove the Ferrari 550 Barchetta Pininfarina convertible that Li Zekai had managed to get for him to work.
Once on the road, the thrill of the open-top car was immediate, with the wind constantly hitting Ferren's face. No wonder Li Zekai had repeatedly warned him to wear a helmet when driving.
"Wear a helmet? That would make it like riding a motorcycle." Ferren muttered, put on the sunglasses he had prepared, and drove into Shallow Water Bay Road.
