Chapter 18

The soft-voiced female doctor stared at Furen with her abnormally dark eyes for a full two seconds before saying, "No!"

The other party's repeated rejection made Furen somewhat angry, but given the rules, he had to patiently explain, "If you're not comfortable, I'll wear gloves and a protective suit. With four eyes watching me, it should be fine, right?"

The soft-voiced female doctor still shook her head and said, "No, my current job is to examine these nine corpses and write a report."

Furen, displeased, said, "Doctor, I'll only take up ten minutes of your time. Is that not possible?"

"No, I need to work now. Please leave," the soft-voiced female doctor insisted.

Furen finally couldn't help but say, "I'm looking at the body parts to solve the case and find clues to bring justice to the victim. Why are you so stubborn, woman?"

"Stubborn? What do you mean?" The doctor's soft voice began to sharpen.

"It's a compliment, a great compliment!" Furen sneered, giving a thumbs up.

If the female doctor couldn't see that Furen was mocking her, she would be a fool. Just as she was about to react, the deputy head of the forensic department pushed the door open and said, "Zeng Man, who is this?"

The female doctor, called Zeng Man, frowned slightly and was about to speak when Furen interjected, "Sir, I am Furen, an intern inspector from the Hong Kong Island Major Crime Unit. I want to take a look at the body parts from the Shanma Village case, of course, just a look!"

The deputy head, who looked to be in his thirties, was dressed in a suit and had the air of a successful man. He glanced at the ID card Furen had clipped to his chest and said hesitantly, "Sir Furen, I am the deputy head of the forensic department, Wu Yunbo. If you really just want to take a look, I don't object. Please follow me, the body parts are not here."

"Thank you!" Furen said happily, giving Zeng Man a slightly smug glance as he left. However, as he was about to exit, he faintly heard a short nurse grumble, "Doctor Zeng, what kind of person is this?"

They arrived at a slightly smaller examination room, and Wu Yunbo said, "Sir Furen, since the Shanma Village case has not yet been tested, your request is already on the line. Before you look at the body parts, you must sign a statement. Also, the entire process will be recorded, and one of my colleagues will witness it!"

Furen was slightly taken aback but immediately said, "No problem, that's reasonable."

Wu Yunbo immediately picked up the internal phone, dialed a number, and said, "Yuchen, come to my office." After hanging up, he took out a form from the drawer, "Sir Furen, please fill out the form and leave the statement and signature in the remarks section."

After Furen filled out the form, a well-dressed male doctor in a white coat entered the room.

Wu Yunbo said at the right time, "Yuchen, let me introduce you. This is Furen, an intern inspector from the Hong Kong Island Major Crime Unit. Sir Furen, this is my colleague, Chief Physician Zhang Yuchen."

Furen immediately shook hands with Zhang Yuchen, and they both said, "Hello!"

Then, Wu Yunbo repeated Furen's request, and Zhang Yuchen's face changed slightly. After Wu Yunbo showed Furen's statement, Zhang Yuchen's expression eased, but he solemnly said to Furen, "Sir Furen, before you look at the body parts, I must remind you that you absolutely cannot touch them, and you must not sneeze or breathe heavily during the process."

"I understand, Deputy Wu has already told me. I will wear a protective suit," Furen nodded, "As for the cost of the protective suit, I will promptly transfer it to your forensic department's account."

In fact, Furen rarely sneezed, and a mask would have been enough, but he was afraid his skin flakes might fall on the body parts, which would be impossible to clean up.

After all preparations were made, Zhang Yuchen pushed out the body bag containing the body parts.

After opening the lid, the cold white mist dissipated, revealing a box filled with various sizes of body parts. It seemed that only Zhang Yuchen, who was in charge of the case, had arranged the body parts in the bag. Furen counted roughly 150 to 160 pieces.

Furen had already learned from the case file that the victim was a woman, and seeing this situation, he was not particularly surprised. Instead, he asked through the earphone in his protective suit, "Where are the sexual characteristics of the female victim?"

This question made Wu Yunbo and Zhang Yuchen exchange glances, and they no longer dared to underestimate the young Furen, who was in his twenties, as he was the first police officer to face these body parts without changing his expression.

After a few seconds, Zhang Yuchen, who was in charge of the case, said, "Sir Furen, although I haven't thoroughly examined them yet, I also noticed that the fragments of the female victim's nipples and pubic area are missing. The killer might have discarded them elsewhere."

Furen listened to Zhang Yuchen's analysis, his eyes scanning the cuts on the body parts. He found that the weapon used to cut the body was extremely sharp and not short. More importantly, the human flesh fragments were mixed with meat from other animals.

"Chief Zhang, are you sure all the body parts in this box are from the same person?" Furen asked.

Zhang Yuchen, displeased, said, "Sir Furen, what do you mean by that? Are you questioning my professional ability?"

"Of course not," Furen waved his hand, "I noticed that about a dozen pieces are not human flesh, probably from a horse or a cat. If you look closely at the fibers of these pieces, they are different from the others." Saying this, he pointed out a few suspicious pieces with his gloved hand.

Wu and Zhang seemed skeptical and immediately took one of them, placing it under a microscope for careful examination.

Before, the body parts were in the body bag, and Furen couldn't get too close, plus the protective headgear blocked his view. Now that the piece was taken out, he took the opportunity to get closer and said with certainty, "This is horse meat. If you take a few pieces from around it for comparison, you'll see that they are from the victim."

Wu and Zhang followed his instructions and indeed found the subtle differences in muscle fibers.

Furen had already obtained the information he needed and began to walk to a corner of the room to take off his protective suit.

Zhang Yuchen, a workaholic, would continue working endlessly once he started, but Wu Yunbo, who was assisting, saw Furen's actions and hurried over, "Sir Furen, what's wrong? Not looking anymore?"

Furen said, "I've already gathered what I needed. There's no need to look further."

"Then I'll see you out!" At this moment, Wu Yunbo's impression of Furen was very different from before, "Sir Furen, have you studied forensic science?"

Furen put the protective suit on the table and said as he pushed the door open, "I haven't specifically studied forensic science, but I have a master's degree in medicine, so I am more sensitive to these things."

Wu Yunbo raised an eyebrow, interested, "Oh? Which medical school did Sir Furen graduate from?"

"Harvard!"

The initial on-site investigation of the dismemberment case was conducted by the Wanchai District Major Crime Unit. Later, the higher-ups decided to transfer the case to the Hong Kong Island Major Crime Unit, so Xie Yixin's team re-examined the scene, which was not a problem.

However, as Furen had predicted, the place where the body parts were found was the rooftop of an old building, not the primary crime scene. Xie Yixin's team's second search was almost fruitless. Fortunately, Dai Yan, leading Li Shi and Li Lidong, with their rich experience, conducted a new survey and obtained some useful clues from the local residents.

Back at the Hong Kong Island Major Crime Unit office, Xie Yixin immediately held a short meeting to summarize the clues.

Dai Yan spoke first, "Madam, according to what Ah Dong found out, there is a girl suspected of working as a prostitute on the first floor, named Wei Danhong, who hasn't been seen in the past two days."

Shi Yiran continued, "Brother Daimao, it's not just a suspicion. Wei Danhong is the prostitute. I managed to find a customer who visited her. According to the customer, Wei Danhong is one of the few high-quality prostitutes he has visited, so even though it was over half a month ago, he still remembers her."

"Perhaps because she was too beautiful, Wei Danhong offended other prostitutes and was killed," Li Lidong said, "Madam, what do you think?"

Xie Yixin said, "We currently have too few clues, and there is no sufficient evidence to show that the victim is Wei Danhong. However, since we have this lead, we will look for Wei Danhong before the forensic report comes out to confirm if she is missing. Of course, everyone, it's lunchtime now."

Dai Yan and the others were taken aback, then they all cheered, "Madam, you are wise!"

In fact, if it were not the first time meeting her subordinates and if there were no evidence linking Wei Danhong to the dismemberment case, Xie Yixin would not have mentioned lunch at this time. At most, she would have had someone buy a few叉烧蛋挞 (char siu egg tarts) to eat during the investigation.

When the whole team was about to head to the restaurant, Xie Yixin was surprised, "Where's Furen? Damn, this guy hasn't come back yet!"

Dai Yan said, "Maybe Sir Furen is still being questioned!"

Just as he finished speaking, they saw their division's Chief Superintendent Chen accompanying Deputy Commissioner Zhou walking down the corridor.

Xie Yixin huffed and said, "Let's go, we'll ignore that guy."

After finding seats and buying their meals, the team sat down to eat. They then noticed that the surrounding officers were discussing the morning robbery on Kwong Ying Street.

Seeing Xie Yixin's attentive expression, Shi Yiran quickly offered to help, "Madam, shall I go and find out more?"

"Sure!" Xie Yixin nodded without comment.

Shi Yiran, as if receiving an imperial decree, immediately took his tray to the side where there were more female clerical officers. Soon, he returned, his face still showing shock.

Li Lidong patted his shoulder and said, "Xiao Ran, you look shocked. What big news did you find out?"

Shi Yiran pushed Li Lidong's hand away, dissatisfied, "Go away, you don't understand. I finally know why the higher-ups called Sir Furen for questioning."

(①: Since Furen's request was not part of the standard procedure, the additional cost had to be borne by him.)

(②: Each of the five major districts in Hong Kong has a Major Crime Unit, and each district's police station also has a Major Crime Unit. For particularly significant or cross-district cases, they are handed over to the Major Crime Units of the respective districts.)
