"Yah——"
In front of the stand's railing, Dai Yan and the three others burst into a thunderous cheer, drawing curious glances from the surrounding people. There was no other reason; Ferren had correctly predicted the outcomes of the third and fourth races, ensuring at least a consolation prize.
"Ferren, you're really amazing!" Li Lidong, hugging Ferren's shoulder, was overjoyed. "No way, we have to increase our bets for the sixth race, increase them!"
His shout drew Dai Yan and Shi Yiran into the excitement, and they joined in, shouting as they went to place higher bets on the sixth race. However, Xie Yixin and Qiu Zhaqiang, standing by Ferren, did not move.
After hitting two consecutive wins, Ferren's confidence in using the Beast Technique to predict the race outcomes in reality was greatly boosted. "Aren't you two going to increase your bets for the sixth race's triple win?"
The explosive girl shook her head indifferently. "If we really hit the triple win, the triple win and other betting methods are just small money. Conversely, if we don't hit the triple win, there's no triple win to be won." In fact, she wanted to spend more time with Ferren.
Unfortunately, Qiu Zhaqiang, not understanding the situation, did not join Dai Yan and the others to increase their bets. Instead, he said, "I agree with Madam's opinion!"
Ferren smiled without comment and asked, "Zhaqiang, which department did you work in before?"
Qiu Zhaqiang replied, "I used to be in ASU!"
"Ha, so you must be very good with guns, right?" Ferren laughed.
"Pretty good, I guess!"
Xie Yixin interjected, "Why don't you two find a time to compete?"
Qiu Zhaqiang, who seemed to have reliable information, waved his hand and said, "The Flying Tigers even invited Alen to be their firearms instructor; how can I dare to compete with him!"
Ferren patted his shoulder and said, "Don't be modest, let's spar when we have time."
At this point, the fifth race had already finished, and Dai Yan and the others returned, grinning. Shi Yiran said, "Big Brother Fei, I also bought a triple win for you three, here's the ticket!"
"Thanks!" Ferren took the ticket and put it in his pocket, then reached out to Xie Yixin and Qiu Zhaqiang for money, "One hundred each!"
Qiu Zhaqiang took out the money without hesitation, but the explosive girl grumbled as she counted her money, "It's just one hundred, why do you have to give it now?"
Ferren glared at her, "If you don't give it, be careful, the ICAC will investigate you!"
Xie Yixin was taken aback and then said, "Oh right!" and quickly handed over a five hundred note to Ferren.
Ferren casually passed the five hundred to Shi Yiran and then took another five hundred from his pocket, tearing off four-fifths and giving it to Xie Yixin, "No change, just keep it for now."
"Do you have to be so troublesome?" Xie Yixin pouted.
Dai Yan and the others also thought Ferren was making a fuss over nothing, but only Qiu Zhaqiang found it normal.
As the horses for the sixth race entered the starting gate, Dai Yan and the others began shouting the names of the four horses they had bet on, and they shouted wildly.
Ferren didn't bother to stop them; after all, there was a one-third chance of hitting the triple win, and this was probably the closest Dai Yan and the others would ever get to a big prize.
The distance of over a thousand meters was quickly covered, and indeed, three of the four horses Ferren had chosen finished in first, second, and third place. Dai Yan and the others were ecstatic, shouting, "WOW~~ Triple win, triple win, triple win!"
Xie Yixin and Qiu Zhaqiang, however, looked incredulous. They couldn't understand why Ferren's bets were always right, but the thought of a few million in dividends made them incredibly excited.
"Don't get too excited yet, let's see how many people hit the triple win this time before we celebrate," Ferren reminded them.
Hearing this, the youngest and most excited Shi Yiran pulled Li Lidong and went to check. He soon returned, elated, and reported, "Big Brother Fei, this time we hit the triple win for over twenty-eight million. After taxes, each of us can get over four million."
Ferren shrugged, "Not bad, but before we collect and distribute the money, we have more to do!" He pointed to the track outside the stand, where the tenth horse in the sixth race, after crossing the finish line, had fallen to the ground, throwing the jockey off.
Xie Yixin picked up a pair of binoculars and looked, saying, "I know this horse, it's called Jin Deli. It's an old horse that has raced over ten times, with a very pure lineage. It has won a single race before, and it shouldn't be like this in such a short race."
Qiu Zhaqiang said, "That can only mean something happened."
"That's why I said we have more to do." Ferren led the way to the stairs. Xie Yixin and the others didn't take the crowded elevator but followed Ferren downstairs.
Upon entering the racecourse, the scene of the incident was already surrounded by many people. After showing their credentials to the security chief who had just arrived, Ferren and the others squeezed into the circle. Fortunately, there were only six races tonight, otherwise, this incident would have caused a significant delay.
"Police, police!"
Upon hearing this, people spontaneously moved back.
Xie Yixin first checked the jockey's condition and then asked, "Before crossing the finish line, did you notice anything abnormal with your mount?"
"No, Madam!" Since the jockey was thrown off during the horse's deceleration, he wasn't injured. "Jin Deli's performance was similar to usual; it could accelerate when urged, nothing abnormal."
"Did you notice anything unusual before the horse fell?" Qiu Zhaqiang also asked from the side.
The explosive girl and Qiu Zhaqiang were responsible for questioning the jockey, while Dai Yan and the others handled the on-site investigation.
As for Ferren, he acted as a forensic expert. He put on plastic gloves, approached the dead horse, and carefully examined it from head to toe. He then opened the horse's mouth, pinched some saliva on his finger, and sniffed it, frowning and muttering, "It seems like poisoning!" However, he couldn't determine the specific poison without further testing.
After some thought, Ferren carefully examined the horse's body inch by inch again. He didn't find the needle marks he had imagined but noticed that the horse's stiffness was much more rigid than in typical cases of horse death or sudden death, yet the muscle groups felt weak.
Ferren quickly recalled the poisons he had seen and was shocked, "This poison... Could it be? No, it shouldn't be possible?"
"What's not possible?" Xie Yixin, who had just finished questioning the jockey, asked.
"I'm sure this horse died of poisoning. I'm trying to figure out the method the culprit used to poison it. I've already ruled out a few possibilities!" Ferren casually replied.
"Poisoning a horse? That's so bizarre!" Xie Yixin was surprised.
Ferren didn't have the mood to chat with her. He recalled the names of the horses that finished eleventh and twelfth in the sixth race and planned to find eyewitness horses in the stables.
The explosive girl was very curious and ordered Qiu Zhaqiang to manage the scene while she followed Ferren to the stables.
At the stables, Ferren quickly found the two horses that had finished behind Jin Deli. They were in the deepest part of the stables and were neighbors, so they were discussing Jin Deli's death.
"What's wrong with Old Jin? He was in better shape than us tonight, how did he die?"
"Who knows, maybe he ate something he shouldn't have!"
"What did Old Jin eat?"
"Didn't many tourists visit the stables during the day? Some of them secretly put carrots and corn in the feed troughs. By the time it got to us, there was nothing left. Old Jin must have eaten too much and died from overeating." This horse clearly couldn't get the good food and was jealous.
"Is that so? I didn't know. Old Jin deserved to die."
"You live in the deepest part, how would you know?"
After hearing this, Ferren had a good idea of what had happened and muttered, "Damn, someone must have used the horse to test the poison. They must have had a plan!"
Xie Yixin, very curious, asked, "Who are you talking about?"
"The person who poisoned the horse." Ferren said this and turned to leave.
The explosive girl asked again, "Who is this person?"
"If I knew, I would have caught them already!"
Back on the track, colleagues from the Sha Tin Police Station had arrived.
After showing their credentials, Xie Yixin handed over the on-site inquiry records to them. Ferren added, "This case is not simple. You can check the surveillance footage around the racecourse and stables. There might be some clues. After the toxicology report is out, please send me a copy."
The colleagues from the Sha Tin Police Station, who had heard of Ferren's reputation, immediately agreed to send the toxicology report. However, they did not explicitly state whether they would review the surveillance footage.
Ferren knew this case was not his to handle, so he didn't bother to say more. After the handover, he and Xie Yixin and the others left the scene.
The explosive girl was still fixated on what Ferren had said in the stables and asked, "Alen, what kind of poison did the horse get? What clues did you find in the stables? Tell me!"
Ferren evaded, "I just did a routine check, what clues could there be?"
"I don't believe you, you must have found something!" Xie Yixin insisted.
Ferren didn't want to get entangled with her and changed the subject, "Guys, when are we going to collect the triple win prize? Let's discuss it!"
This question immediately energized Dai Yan and the others, including the usually cold Qiu Zhaqiang, who joined the discussion. No one paid attention to the explosive girl's curiosity anymore.
In the end, everyone agreed that Ferren would collect the prize the next day and then distribute the money to each person. Ferren did not object to this decision but, to be cautious, he called Wilson to draft a contract in seven copies, detailing the process of buying the triple win and the distribution of the prize money after collection.
After signing the contract, Wilson kept one copy and took it back to the law firm, while the other six copies were held by Ferren and the others.
Dai Yan looked at the six signatures on his contract and said, "Alen, we all trust you, why do we need this?"
Ferren waved his hand, "This isn't about trust, it's about the ICAC. With this, we have a clear record, understand?"
The next day, Ferren went to collect the triple win prize. After deducting taxes, he strictly followed the contract and transferred over four million Hong Kong dollars to the accounts of Xie Yixin and the others, not a penny more or less.
By Friday, the forensic report for the half-mountain corpse case and the toxicology report for the horse's death from the Sha Tin Police Station had arrived.
Ferren didn't immediately look at the forensic report but opened the toxicology report. When he saw that the horse Jin Deli had been poisoned by botulinum toxin, he was shocked again.
Xie Yixin peeked at the report and was surprised, "Isn't botulinum toxin used for beauty? Can it also kill a horse?"
Ferren glared at her, "The purified toxicity of botulinum toxin is ten thousand times stronger than potassium cyanide, it's even better for killing people!"
