Arc 1: Donor Song – First Encounter in the Mountain (Chapter 2 – 16)
Trigger warning (for the whole arc): MC is a nun. (Errr do let me know if I’m missing anything or going overboard with my trigger warnings because I’m pretty clueless with them that’s what you get for not getting an editor/proofreader )
At dusk, half of the sun in the west had been swallowed by the distant mountains, and the remaining half dyed the sky red with a sunset glow.
The setting sun shrouded Jade Spring Mountain, which was partially obscured from view.
At the foot of the mountain, smoke was billowing in all directions. The villagers had already begun with their dinner preparations.
In the woods on the mountain, except for the chirping of birds and insects, the only sounds were the rustling of leaves in the wind and the rippling of the river.
Tang Huan squatted by the stream, staring at her reflection in the water, lost in her thoughts.
Tang Huan didn’t quite believe it when her master said she could help her enter Song Mo’s dreams, especially since she appeared in such a realistic place after a white light flashed in her mind. This place did not adhere to her perception of how dreams should look. In her previous dreams, aside from the things that made her scared or happy, the rest of the backgrounds were all blurry. When she woke up, she would only remember where she had dreamed, who she saw, and what happened, but it would never give her such realistic sensations.
The breeze was cool, the air was fresh, and her ears and neck…felt chilly.
There was a noisy little nun by her side complaining about how they had not met their master’s targeted amount of alms and even going to return late today. Their master would undoubtedly punish them later.
Tang Huan’s gaze fell on the exact same grey robes on the both of them, then to the hat on the little nun’s head. She jumped to her feet and dashed towards the stream.
She found a puddle where the water was still, reflecting a clear image of her face like a mirror.
She noticed the familiar pairs of eyes and brows in the reflection. Phew, she still had her own face on.
But why was she wearing the same nun’s hat? 1
Tang Huan raised her arm and slowly removed the hat from her head.
When she saw her bald head, Tang Huan finally believed, believing that she was indeed in a dream.
Her hair…
Master-ah, can’t you arrange a better identity for me? You expect me to ‘pick flowers’ while sporting a bald head? Any normal man will never fall for me, okay?
Where is Song Mo anyway?
As the thought flashed through her mind, Tang Huan became dizzy. Before she could react, she had already fallen to the ground.
“Minghui, Minghui, what’s the matter with you?”
Someone was yelling in her ear anxiously.
Tang Huan blinked her eyes open. When she saw the little nun’s face again, she suddenly remembered. The nun’s name was Mingxin. Tang Huan and Mingxin both joined the nunnery and became disciples to the same master around the same time, so Mingxin was her junior sister. Today, the two of them went down the mountain to collect alms, but they did not receive any silver taels or copper coins. They only had two steamed buns in the afternoon and had not eaten anything else since.
“I’m fine. I just got dizzy from hunger,” she lied instinctively. She stood up and turned away from Mingxin, trying to hide the panic in her eyes. Song Mo did not exist in the extra memories she received. What should she do now? Where should she find him when she didn’t have a single clue?
Being dizzy from hunger was common, so Mingxin didn’t think much about it. “Bear with it a little longer,” she said, pulling Tang Huan’s sleeve. “Let’s go back to the nunnery right now. Master might have saved us some porridge when she saw that we were coming home late.”
“Okay.”
Tang Huan did not object to the suggestion and even took the initiative to walk at the front. She was indeed hungry. Her stomach had been growling for a while now. At the moment, she had no kung fu nor money, and being a nun made her stand out too much. She’d have a difficult time escaping on her own. She decided to stay in the nunnery for the time being and assess her current situation. Her master would never do anything to harm her. Since her master helped her get into Song Mo’s dreams, she would never leave her without providing any clues.
They were still an hour’s walk away from the nunnery. They were both hungry and dispirited, so no one was in the mood to talk.
The sky gradually darkened, and the last rays of sunlight began to disappear.
Perhaps it was the instincts from learning martial arts since childhood, but after entering the dream, Tang Huan could still sense danger even though she didn’t have any kung fu.
She turned her head back abruptly.
And caught sight of two men standing behind them.
Surprised by her actions, the two of them froze, and after a momentarily pause, they hurriedly hid in the bushes nearby. Before Tang Huan could make sense of what had happened, the two of them casually emerged from the bushes again. The tall, built and coarse-clothed man looked in her eyes, smiling wickedly and said, “We were planning to make a move later, but I didn’t expect Little Master Minghui to be so sharp to notice us. Then let’s do it right here!” He motioned to his companion, and the thin man ran towards them while laughing.
Tang Huan knitted her brows. She recognised these two from her additional memory.
The tall one was called Qiao Liu. The man without parents had been committing all sorts of heinous crimes. The man, however, was tall and strong, and the villagers couldn’t do anything about him. They could only hope for his early death. The nickname for the shorter one was Skinny Monkey. He was Qiao Liu’s accomplice and was responsible for coming up with the ideas for most of their offenses.
Qiao Liu even knew her name. Had he been targeting her for some time now?
If she had kung fu, Tang Huan could send Qiao Liu flying with a single kick, but now she could only flee! In her memory, this body was so weak that walking a mile with two buckets of water in her hands could leave her arms sore for a long time. She probably couldn’t even beat Skinny Monkey!
“Run!”
Tang Huan pushed Mingxin who was shivering behind her and motioned her to run to the east, while she fled to the forest to the west. The path to the north and south had been blocked, and they were both bound to be doomed if they ran in the same direction. If they split ways, they may still have a chance of survival in a one-on-one fight. She couldn’t die, and she certainly couldn’t lose her virginity. If the Mingxin in her memory hadn’t been so pure and kind, she wouldn’t even push her to remind her to run. She would have wanted for someone to hold the men back!
After her gesture of kindness, Tang Huan couldn’t be bothered about Mingxin anymore. She dashed off without checking to see if Mingxin had fled.
She heard Qiao Liu ordering Skinny Monkey to chase Mingxin, while he chased after her himself.
Tang Huan finally understood what it meant when they say beauty attracts trouble. If she wasn’t better looking than Mingxin, the person chasing after her now must have been Skinny Monkey. Judging by their appearances, Skinny Monkey should have been an easier opponent than Qiao Liu!
As the wind roared in her ears while she ran, Tang Huan could hear the heavy footsteps behind her getting louder and louder.
Tang Huan wanted to curse someone again!
She was already hungry and exhausted from walking all day. How could she possibly have enough energy to run?
But she didn’t have a choice!
She liked to ‘pick flowers’, not being ‘picked’ on! The likes of Qiao Liu were not even worthy of carrying her shoes! Besides, if it wasn’t the matter of life and death, if she couldn’t escape, she didn’t mind giving it to him once. By the looks of his figure, he should be good at it . At most, she would close her eyes and pretend she was just getting bitten by a pig. But now she had to protect her virginity for Song Mo!
She couldn’t believe there came a day where she had to remain chaste!
