The wheels of the carriage creaked, and the ground of Blackwater City was paved with irregular bluestones, making it very uneven. Sitting in the carriage felt quite bumpy.
Next to Melin sat Meixue. The faint scent of a young girl that wafted from her made Melin feel very comfortable. However, the carriage was too bumpy, and after sitting for a while, he felt a bit uncomfortable. He then leaned against the carriage, slightly bending his legs, which made him feel more comfortable.
But Meixue was very dissatisfied. She glanced at Melin's legs stretched out in front of her, frowned slightly, and said, "Melin, can't you put your legs properly? You are a noble, and you should have the demeanor of a noble."
"I'll just lie down for a bit. I didn't sleep well last night."
Melin replied casually, still doing as he pleased, maintaining the most comfortable posture for himself.
To his surprise, Meixue did not argue with Melin. She bit her lip lightly, a worried look on her face, and asked cautiously, "Is it because of Averil?"
Melin did not answer, but Meixue continued on her own, "Actually, you don't need to worry too much. Averil has already formally engaged to you. This is a testament to the decades of friendship between the Baman family and our Wilson family. Averil will eventually marry you. But in the future, don't go around causing trouble. Spend more time with Averil, and perhaps she will like you."
Although Melin had his eyes closed, he was not really asleep. He remembered Meixue's words firmly.
"Averil is my fiancée? But from what Meixue said, it seems Averil doesn't like me... Why do I have no memory of this at all?"
Melin had only obtained part of his memory, and some memories had permanently disappeared. To avoid raising suspicion, he had to pay attention to every word of everyone around him and analyze the key information.
Mentioning Averil, as Meixue did, was definitely important information, which Melin also secretly remembered.
After lying for a while, Melin felt a bit stuffy and lifted the curtain. A cold wind rushed in, making him shiver.
"It's almost winter..." Melin said with a sigh. It was already September, the last month of autumn, but the cold seemed to have come early.
"Yes, it's almost winter. I don't know why, but the weather has been getting colder this year."
Meixue tightly wrapped herself in her clothes, curling up in the corner of the carriage.
Outside, it seemed to be drizzling. There were not many people on the street, only a group of a dozen or so homeless people kneeling on the ground, begging from the elegantly dressed people walking by.
These homeless people were wearing rough linen clothes, thin like ropes, their eyes filled with longing. Some of them were even very young children.
When others saw these homeless people, they all showed a look of disgust, some even covering their noses and quickening their steps to leave. Melin glanced at these homeless people indifferently and then focused his gaze on a group of young knights riding horses on the street.
These knights were all uniformly dressed in silver light armor, covering their upper bodies, holding wooden shields in their hands, and carrying large swords on their backs, looking very imposing. The crowd on the street seemed to fear these knights, and some children, when they saw these knights, showed a look of envy.
Melin frowned. He did not recognize these knights, but he dared not ask Meixue.
Meixue also saw these knights in the carriage and seemed to disdain them, saying coldly, "These guys again, the city guard knights, all show and no substance. So many people leaving the city, probably another town has been attacked by bandits. Things have been getting more and more unstable recently, and there have been many bandits around Blackwater City."
Melin did not speak but quietly remembered all this information. He had just arrived in this world, and his memories were still very chaotic, so it was not advisable to speak too much.
Melin observed for a while. Although there were only over a hundred city guard knights, they were well-equipped, and each of them exuded a solemn and deadly aura, far from being just show as Meixue had said.
These knights were leaving the city and soon disappeared from Melin's sight. After watching for a while, Melin felt the cold wind piercing his skin and put down the curtain, hiding in the warm carriage.
After some time, the carriage gradually came to a stop. The servant Mos softly called, "Young Master Melin, Miss Meixue, we have arrived at the church."
"Alright, let's get out. We're at the church!"
Meixue seemed very energetic and jumped out of the carriage. Melin followed behind, gently stretching his body and twisting his slightly stiff neck. He then raised his head and saw a church in front of him.
This church was extremely large, almost as big as four or five football fields. There were ordinary believers and some nobles in noble attire coming and going. They were all there to pray in the morning.
The Kingdom of Light worshipped the God of Light, and the church had great power. There was a church of the Light Church in almost every city, and people coming to pray in the morning were endless.
Melin also followed the crowd into the church hall. The walls of the hall were painted white, and there were large murals on them. These colorful and vivid murals were clearly religious murals praising the God of Light.
Melin saw a large mural in the center, depicting a tall, blurry figure of a deity, radiating a gentle holy light. The white holy light enveloped many ordinary believers, including the elderly, children, men, women, nobles, commoners, and even criminals. Under the holy light, their faces all showed devout and peaceful smiles.
The name of this religious mural was "God Loves All," written in the language of Light. Melin had inherited part of the memory in his mind, so he recognized the Light language on the mural.
In addition to this mural of "God Loves All," there were other murals such as "God Drives Away Darkness," "God Brings Light," "God Punishes Devils," "God Sends Miracles," and "God Blesses Believers." Although the stories in the murals were different, the meaning they conveyed was the same, all praising the glorious deeds of the God of Light.
The devout believers all bowed their heads, hands pressed to their chests, and were led by the priest in prayer. For a moment, the large church was filled with various prayer voices.
Thinking of the emaciated homeless people on the street and seeing the devout people praying, Melin finally realized that this was ultimately a very backward world!
