Dr. Lizard believed he had successfully shaken off Spider-Man and Irmir. He carried the Gnarly Device, which had been hidden in the sewers, in one hand, and held his son Billy tightly in the other.
Perhaps because he knew the green monster holding him was his father, Billy did not cry as much as expected. He remained silent throughout the journey until Dr. Lizard brought him to his secret laboratory in the lower levels of the New York sewers. Billy then opened his big, black eyes and looked around, asking, "Dad, why did you bring me here? Why?"
Without Spider-Man's interference, Dr. Lizard regained some of his sanity. He busily opened the experimental equipment and said, "This way, we can be together forever."
"Dad, I love you, and I want to be with you, but not like this..." Little Billy didn't know what his father was doing, but he could swear to God that he didn't want to turn into a big lizard.
"I love you too." Dr. Lizard placed the Gnarly Device on the lab table and set Billy down. "I need you now, yes, I need you to help Dad with a small task."
"Listen, I need your hands to operate for me because I can't do it myself." Dr. Lizard gently stroked the Gnarly Device. Compared to the buttons designed for human fingers, his three claws were too large and too sharp.
"But Dad, I've never seen this device before." Born into a research family, Dr. Connors and Mrs. Connors occasionally brought little Billy to the lab.
So he was familiar with various experimental equipment. The Gnarly Device looked like the most complex and advanced instrument he had ever seen. "Dad, what are you going to use it for?"
"Don't be afraid, Billy. This device will transform you. You will gain the ability to heal wounds and regrow limbs." Dr. Lizard lifted the Gnarly Device and walked step by step toward Billy, as if presenting his most precious treasure.
"First, you, then all of New York, all humans, will have the right to evolve!"
He pointed to the extensive underground water channels and said, "Once I inject the hybrid gene serum into this Gnarly Device, it will become a simple new gene recombination device. The gene mist it produces can spread through the sewers to every household in the city."
"All men, women, and children like you, I can transform them all. From now on, there will be no more pain, no more disabilities!"
Billy interrupted his father's rant, "But Dad, after you transform everyone, will they all become like you?"
Dr. Lizard laughed softly, "Of course, I will create a new species, the most excellent species, and I will be their—King!"
"Dad, if you are really that excellent, why do you need my help?" Billy didn't understand. "You haven't become better; look at what you've become..."
"No, you dare to defy me!" Dr. Lizard, touched on a sore point, became agitated. He stopped Billy from speaking, "You are blinded by appearances! I can make humans better, and no one can stop me!"
"Sorry, Dr. Connors, I agree with Billy. We need to talk!" A voice came from the sewer pipe, and Dr. Lizard's pupils contracted as he looked up. "Oh no, it's you again, Spider-Man!"
Correctly identified, Spider-Man shot a web at the sewer pipe and leaped, kicking Dr. Lizard away from Billy. Dr. Lizard stumbled from the impact but quickly recovered, turning around and slashing Spider-Man's suit with his sharp tail.
"Hey, my suit!" Spider-Man complained. He had spent the entire night patching up the tear from his battle with the demon, and now a larger tear appeared on his chest.
He summoned his strength, grabbed Dr. Lizard's tail, and shouted, "Phantom, protect Billy!"
Dr. Lizard looked at Spider-Man, who was holding his tail, and sneered. Then, with a shake, his tail broke off. Spider-Man, holding the broken tail, was thrown back and fell to the ground. "Terrible, he used the tail-drop survival technique!"
"Ha ha ha!" Dr. Lizard pounced like a hungry tiger, and a new tail had already grown back behind him.
Spider-Man jumped up, dodging the saliva-spewing Dr. Lizard. "Oh, now it looks like I need protection."
The new tail was even more powerful. Spider-Man avoided the strike, but Dr. Lizard's tail shattered a water pipe in New York.
The high water pressure gushed out, and Spider-Man used the force to leap high and cling to the pipe, looking down at Dr. Lizard. "His mind is completely twisted!"
With his back to Billy, Dr. Lizard tried to reach the Gnarly Device. Billy took the opportunity to move toward it; he couldn't let his father turn everyone into lizards.
Spider-Man became anxious and shouted, "Billy, run, don't touch that device!"
Dr. Lizard sensed the change behind him. He picked up a large steel plate from the ground and threw it at Spider-Man, then turned and ran toward the Gnarly Device.
Billy was terrified by the charging Dr. Lizard and didn't know what to do. Fortunately, a cold force pulled him away from Dr. Lizard's path.
"Mine, it's mine!" Dr. Lizard roared in rage. With each step forward, the Gnarly Device on the ground moved a bit further away. It was as if in a game of hide-and-seek, an invisible force kept it out of his reach.
"Strange, who, who is ruining my plan?" Just as Dr. Lizard's anger reached its peak, a lazy, calm voice came from above, "I'm here."
Spider-Man was curious that Irmir would reveal himself in front of others. He looked up and was startled!
Irmir did not appear in his true form; he had even changed his outfit. His exposed face and skin were covered with burn marks.
He and Spider-Man had been chasing Dr. Lizard and had no time to change clothes. But it didn't matter; since they weren't facing a magical super-criminal, Irmir could cover himself with a layer of dark energy. The dark energy, infused with resentment, could distort others' vision, making them see what he wanted them to see.
