Chapter 93

Jihwan and Jiye’s mother, Mrs. Sung, kept quiet.

But Jiye took Jihwan’s side. She replied to her grandfather, “Oh, come on, Grandfather. It’s not like this is Thanksgiving day. I’m sure he’ll come when he can, so you should go easy on him.”

“But wouldn’t it be nice for him to be here,” Chairman Kwon insisted.

“Grandfather, you’re being unreasonable. You know how busy Jihwan is with his business nowadays,” Jiye answered.

Chairman Kwon yelled, “That’s not fair. He isn’t the only one who’s running a business! So why can’t he make time for his family?!”

“Grandfather, I’m not talking about that business. I’m talking about the business of love.”

When Jiye announced, both Chairman Kwon and Jiye’s mother gasped. They put down their teacups on the table and yelled, “What? The business of love? Are you saying Jihwan has a girlfriend?”

Jihwan was now 34 years old. He wouldn’t be considered an old bachelor, but the elders of the family were worried. It was even worse because it seemed Jihwan had no interest in dating anyone. Both Chairman Kwon and Mrs. Sung were getting worried. They sometimes offered to set up blind dates for Jihwan, but he always refused. Jihwan wanted to be a musician, but they forced him to return to Korea to learn the business. Chairman Kwon and Mrs. Sung were concerned that Jihwan might never get married.

So when Jiye announced that Jihwan was dating someone, they were so happy.

Chairman Kwon asked, “Are you sure, Jiye? How do you know?”

“Because I’ve met her myself,” replied Jiye.

“Really? And what is she like? Tell us! Hurry!” Chairman Kwon yelled.

Jiye answered, “She’s a genuine woman. She’s pretty and polite, and she seemed like a very upstanding young woman. I couldn’t find anything wrong with her.”

Chairman Kwon and Mrs. Sung looked at each other. They knew how picky Jiye could be. She was kind, but she had high expectations from people around her. It was very rare to please Jiye, so if she was this happy about this woman, it had to mean that the woman Jihwan was dating had to be amazing.

Jiye added, “Well, I guess the only fault you might find in her is that she lost her parents when she was very young. And she grew up very poor.”

But Chairman Kwon wasn’t born rich either. He began as a construction worker. He started from the bottom, and with hard work, he built the biggest construction company in the country. Even though he was rich and powerful now, Chairman Kwon was still very down to earth. He couldn’t do any hard labor anymore because he was older, but only a few years ago, he used to go manage the construction sites himself while chatting and eating with the workers.

Jiye was just like his grandfather. When she was marrying her husband, who came from an average family, Jiye didn’t care about his lack of money. Jiye claimed that since she was rich, they would be fine.

Chairman Kwon replied, “It’s not her fault that she lost her parents early. And our family has money, so who cares if she’s poor?”

“I knew you would understand, Grandpa!” Jiye smiled at Chairman Kwon and raised her thumbs. She was over 30 years old and a mother herself, yet Chairman Kwon couldn’t grin at her affectionate gesture. To him, she was still a little girl.

Jiye continued, “She’s really a great young woman, Grandfather. You trust me, don’t you?”

“Of course! If my Jiye says she’s good enough, I have no problem! If she’s nice and Jihwan likes her, what is there to worry about?” Chairman Kwon exclaimed.

Just then, Jiye turned a little sour. She muttered, “But there is one problem.”

“A problem?” asked Mrs. Sung.

“Well, I don’t think that lady is interested in Jihwan.”

Mrs. Sung and Chairman Kwon looked at each other. Chairman Hwang asked, “But you said Jihwan was in the business of love.”

“Yeah, but they aren’t dating yet. I heard Jihwan is courting her right now.”

Mrs. Sung said in annoyance, “That silly boy… There are women lined up to date him, yet he chooses someone who isn’t even interested in him… So why is that young woman not interested in our Jihwan?”

Mrs. Sung sounded very frustrated. She thought the world of her son, so she couldn’t understand that there could be a woman in the world who didn’t like him.

Jiye replied, “I’m sure she feels uncomfortable because of how rich we are. It’s understandable, isn’t it?”

“I guess that’s true…,” Mrs. Sung trailed off.

“She’s probably worried that you two might not like her either. But Grandpa and you aren’t like that at all, right Mom?” asked Jiye.

“Of course not,” said Chairman Hwang quickly.

“N…no…,” Mrs. Sung replied hesitantly.

Chairman Hwang had many questions. “So what does she do? And how old is she?”

“I think she’s turning 29 this year. She’s working as a designer in Jihwan’s company,” Jiye answered.

“Ah, really? So she works for our company. And what’s her name?” asked Chairman Kwon.

“Her name is Kang Eunseo.”
