Chapter 73
“Well, I’m doing okay, I guess… As you know, it’s so hard to get jobs nowadays… And my wife is sick, so she’s in the hospital now,” Mr. Kim replied.
Eunseo jolted. “Mrs. Kim is sick? Where?”
Mrs. Kim was also very kind to Eunseo. Because Eunseo didn’t have a mother at the time, Mrs. Kim cooked for her often.
Mr. Kim explained, “It’s not a fatal illness, but she needs surgery. The problem is that this surgery is going to cost a lot, and… the thing is…”
Mr. Kim took out an old piece of paper from his pocket. When he unfolded it, Eunseo saw that it was an IOU. She instantly recognized that it was her father’s writing.
Mr. Kim continued, “When the factory went bankrupt, your father tried so hard to save it. So I got a second mortgage to help him. But in the end, it didn’t work out.”
Eunseo saw that the IOU was for 30,000 dollars.
Mr. Kim continued, “I know I am being shameless, but I have to ask. If you have some money saved up, would you be able to pay back part of it?”
Eunseo closed her eyes. Her father worked so hard, hoping that he wouldn’t leave any debt to his daughter. She thought he had taken care of all of his debt, but it looked like this wasn’t the case.
This wasn’t her debt. It was over 10 years old, so Eunseo didn’t think she was legally obligated to pay it back at all. As far as she knew, she didn’t have to as long as she gave up the inheritance. This meant that she could just ignore this.
For a few seconds, this was exactly what she wanted to do.
But Eunseo couldn’t ignore Mr. Kim, who was shivering. Her father’s factory went bankrupt 15 years ago, so she knew that 30000 dollars at the time would have been a huge amount. She couldn’t believe Mr. Kim gave such a large sum of money to her father.
Mr. Kim’s hands were so rough, telling her that he had led a rough life.
When Eunseo didn’t reply, he must have thought she was going to refuse him. He whispered, “I’m sorry I am asking you for money after all this time. I am so ashamed of myself. I shouldn’t have said anything, Eunseo. After all, this isn’t even your debt, right? I’m sure I’ll find another way.”
Mr. Kim tried to smile, but Eunseo squeezed his hands and replied, “Mr. Kim. I haven’t worked for a long time, so I don’t have a lot saved up. But I’ll give you what I can.”
“Eunseo…” Mr. Kim’s eyes sparked with hope.
Eunseo asked, “Would 10000 dollars be enough for the surgery?”
“Yes, it would be.” Mr. Kim’s eyes filled with tears again. “Eunseo, I’m so sorry…”
“No, there is no need for you to apologize. My father borrowed that money from you, so I should be apologizing. Don’t worry about it. Just focus on getting Mrs. Kim better for now. I’ll go visit her in the hospital, so please let me know when it’s time for her surgery.”
Mr. Kim began crying, and Eunseo held his hands to reassure him.
After he left, Eunseo sat down and stared at the walls. After her father lost his factory, he worked in the construction sites to pay back his debts. He died when Eunseo was in her second year of college from overworking himself. At the time, her father and her stepmother were already divorced, so her stepmother didn’t want anything to do with the funeral. In the end, Eunseo had to get a loan to take care of the funeral arrangement.
She barely managed to save enough for her own place to live, and now, she was going to have to give a chunk of it to Mr. Kim. But Eunseo didn’t regret this.
She thought to herself, ‘ It’s going to be okay. I can save up again. Even after I give him 10000 dollars, I’ll still have some money left, right?’
Eunseo tried to cheer up, but it was hard. Based on her calculation, she would have to stay in her home for another four months to save enough. She lived with her stepmother and stepsister for over 10 years, so a few months shouldn’t have been a big deal. But because she had been so looking forward to moving out, spending even just a few more days in that place seemed like a nightmare to her.
Suddenly, Eunseo thought of all the expensive gifts Jihwan gave her. The watch, bags, and coats. Most of them were still in their packaging. They were brand new. If she sold them, she would be able to easily get 10000 dollars.
But Jihwan didn’t give these gifts to her so she could sell them. Eunseo knew it was the wrong thing to do.
It was then that Eunseo realized it was time to pump her breast.
