The Fifth Sentence Part 1
Both of Pu Tao’s cheeks turned red instantly.
She never thought that she would be able to hear Cloud Dweller’s voice on the spot so soon.
Her heart dropped, then jumped. With an almost worship-like devotion, she was ready for a mind to explode and clicked on listen.
The same four seconds later, Pu Tao was petrified.
This was a voice beyond any imagination—not because it was so electrifying where even the breathing was so distinctive, but because the owner of the voice was making a mimicry.
That’s right.
It was the words she had longed for, but not the voice she longed for.
The vocal range was huge. The first sentence imitated a cool sister’s 1 cold tone, and the second sentence transformed into an old man who had experienced the ups and downs of life.
Pu Tao’s boiling mind fell to a freezing point. She asked in disbelief: “Are you really the one who said that?”
Cloud Dweller, who might be smiling: “What do you think?”
"
"
Pu Tao’s entire body was frozen.
If she remembered correctly, this might be the falsetto that Xin Tian once mentioned.
Sure enough, CVs were monsters.
Pu Tao replied: “Are you a man or a woman?”
Cloud Dweller: “Is that important?”
Pu Tao wanted to say that it was.
This kind of remark did not settle well with her because it was like his voice was beginning to think about her shameless mentality.
But she continued to be straightforward. “How do I say this? There’s a type of voice from a guy that might be more in line with my personal fantasy.”
Cloud Dweller: “If you just like a certain type of voice, then I am not important to you.”
Cloud Dweller: “I can also make other sounds, but so can anyone else.”
Pu Tao was speechless. She somewhat felt that this man was refusing, and he was keenly aware of her little naughty thoughts that were ready to pounce.
She frowned and rapidly typed: “But your voice is also part of you. People will be attracted by a certain characteristic of another person, such as face, figure, and style. Isn’t a voice one of those characteristics? Can’t voice be one of them?”
She also provided evidence for her logic: “Isn’t it just like how you were attracted by my drawing and said those things to me?”
Cloud Dweller did not respond again.
For a moment, he was so amused by her remark that he could only laugh.
After he started working on radio dramas, he met girls who used various ways to approach him. Some even got real information about him through acquaintances and squatted near his apartment to block his path. He couldn’t stand it.
They all had an almost blind fascination with him because of his voice. They also had a strong, uncontrollable desire to pry into his private life. Truthfully, their behavior was terrible.
At first, he ignored it; but later, he discovered that treating people coldly would make some of them more stubborn and brave. Thus, he had to make it clear to them and refuse them directly.
But the girl was the opposite of them. It was obvious that her brain functioned strangely. She did not understand what he meant at all, and still joined the fan army.
He simply remained silent. The more things were said, the more mistakes there were.
—
Pu Tao waited until 11 o’clock and she still did not get a reply from that man.
She was embarrassed to bother him again. She could only click on the friends list on her profile every five minutes to confirm whether he had deleted her or not.
While she was taking a bath, she put her cell phone on the edge of the sink out of the fear that Cloud Dweller would change his mind and she wouldn’t notice his message in time because she was too busy doing something else.
Pu Tao was too embarrassed to share her shameful mishap with her friend. She tossed and turned and couldn’t sleep.
As if she was doing reading comprehension homework, she looked through her chat records with Cloud Dweller over and over again.
That falsetto made her afraid no matter how many times she heard it. However, it couldn’t wash away how breathtaking she found his voice to be when she initially listened to it.
Pu Tao also went to find Cloud Dweller’s livestream to replay it.
His livestream was like a radio program. For half an hour, he did nothing related to singing or dubbing excerpts. Instead, he read private letters from fans and gave them advice. Sometimes, he shared some of his falsetto skills.
But his original voice was still so enjoyable. The tone was just right, even if it wasn’t overly emotional. It also had a quality that was between mild and cold, like milk and coffee being properly mixed together for an impeccable rich flavor.
Was this the kind of person who would blame a little girl for liking him?
It was an example of a thief crying, “Stop thief!” 2
At 12:30, Pu Tao sat up from the bed in distress. She reopened her iPad and erased the text bubble and the smitten stick figure. She filled in that part with the female lead’s character design.
It was deep into the night when the entire drawing was finished.
Pu Tao yawned and rubbed her eyelids for a while. She stretched the back of her neck where it was a little stiff.
She saved the drawing and transferred it to her cell phone. Then, she sent it to Xin Tian and Sunflower.
The next day, the results of her hard work were rewarded. The producer praised her for the drawing’s quality and her efficiency.
When the art designer sent the first draft of the poster to the group chat, everyone complimented it, and even a few CV who rarely showed up said it was nice.
For the next two weeks, Pu Tao stopped listening to the radio drama and began to have withdrawal symptoms.
Maybe this was my three-minute passion 3 , she thought.
Xin Tian came to ask her about her progress with Cloud Dweller.
She was desperate to not be ashamed, so she could only laugh and interrupt her. She said that this was not like a plague or a fire, so she was just going to take it one step at a time.
In reality, she didn’t say a word to Cloud Dweller after that night. Not a word.
He was still on the top of her chat list, and he really did become a flower of kaolin 4 who she and the common people had no hope of reaching.

御姐 (yùjiě) – loan word from Japanese for a charming and powerful woman that’s queen-like 贼喊捉贼 (zéihǎnzhuōzéi) – idiom that means to accuse somebody of misdeeds and shift the blame away from himself. Three-minute passion refers to when you are crazy and enthusiastic about something, but it only lasts for three minutes before you go back to normal 高岭之花 (gāolǐngzhīhuā) – it’s a metaphor for things that can only be looked at from a distance, but cannot be touched
