Chapter 6

7 min read1,655 words

In the following days, Jiang Fei visited over a dozen villages as potential sites for his project. The closer ones were just outside the Third Ring Road, while the farther ones were about a hundred kilometers away from Jincheng, already within the planning zones of other cities.

However, despite his efforts, Jiang Fei still couldn't find a place that met his standards.

Jiang Fei had always been someone who cared deeply about material enjoyment. Even if he only had five yuan in his pocket, he would still ask the vendor to add bacon to his hand-held pancake. For a place where he planned to live long-term, he definitely wouldn't settle for anything less than perfect; he preferred to have nothing rather than something subpar.

"Keep looking! In this land of talented people and abundant resources, I can't believe I won't find a picturesque village!"

Another day, Jiang Fei was about to close his clinic and drive around to look for a place. He had just taken off his white coat and hadn't even had time to tidy up when a commotion broke out at the clinic across the street, piquing his curiosity.

"Quack doctor, you've harmed people!"

"You must give us an explanation. If not, we'll smash your pharmacy today!"

"My mother was always in good health! But after taking this quack doctor's medicine, she's in this state now!"

Several men carried a stretcher with an unconscious old lady and stormed into the clinic of the attractive young female doctor, pushing aside the patients who were waiting in line.

The men were shouting non-stop, while the female family members looked grief-stricken, crying and making a scene, as if they were determined to escalate the situation.

"A medical accident?" Jiang Fei was taken aback. He didn't bother to close his clinic and crossed the road to see what was happening. He hadn't used any underhanded tactics against his competitor, and now that she was in trouble, he was naturally pleased.

Jiang Fei considered himself not a bad person, but he wasn't magnanimous enough to worry about his competitor. Besides, this competitor was extremely 'cruel,' almost driving him out of business.

Now that this attractive young female doctor's clinic had a medical accident, it was an opportunity for him. Perhaps he could seize this chance to revive his business, which was currently deserted.

Bang!

A middle-aged woman slammed her hand on the counter, pointing at the female doctor and shouting, "Come out! Get out here!"

The men placed the unconscious old lady on the ground and walked over to add to the commotion, "Come out quickly. If you don't, we'll start smashing things!"

Most clinics have steel-reinforced glass counters where various medicines are stored. The counter divides the clinic into two parts: patients wait outside, and the doctor sits inside to treat them.

So, the female doctor was inside, and if she didn't come out, these troublemakers couldn't get to her.

As for the regular customers who usually got along well with the female doctor, none of them dared to intervene. They formed a circle around the scene, discussing the situation.

This was a medical accident. The old lady on the stretcher looked like she wouldn't live much longer, even if she wasn't dead yet.

If this was indeed the female doctor's fault, the trouble would be significant.

The female doctor, Dr. Su Nan, understood this. Despite her usual polished appearance, she now looked pale and frightened in front of the angry family members.

However, hiding behind the counter wouldn't solve the problem.

She had to face it and resolve the issue.

Dr. Su Nan, known as Dr. Su, combed her long, straight hair, took a few deep breaths to calm herself, and then stood up, saying, "Don't panic. Let me see what's going on."

Dr. Su unlocked the counter and stepped out, only to be roughly grabbed by a strong, middle-aged man and dragged to the unconscious old lady. He said, "What's going on? Look! My mother has been feeling unwell and has no appetite for the past few days. So, she came to see you yesterday and got some medicine. Before taking the medicine, she was fine, but after taking it last night, she didn't wake up this morning. We called 120, and they took her to the city hospital, but the doctors there refused to admit her and told us to prepare for her funeral!"

At this point, the man's eyes were red, and he held Dr. Su's arm tightly, waving his other hand and asking the onlookers, "What do you think? Should we demand an explanation from this quack doctor?!"

The crowd, hearing the story, began to point and comment.

"Did she die from the medicine?"

"She does deserve an explanation."

"Losing a mother like this would be hard for anyone."

Dr. Su's face turned even paler.

If even the city hospital refused to admit the patient, it meant the patient was in a critical condition with no hope of recovery.

Any doctor in this situation would find it difficult to resolve.

Her mind was in a daze, and her arm was hurting from the man's grip. She stammered, "When did this old lady come to see me? I don't remember!"

The middle-aged woman who had been shouting earlier walked over and started cursing, "You're trying to deny it, you quack doctor! Shameless fox!"

Jiang Fei found this amusing. The lady was really unrefined, cursing the quack doctor and then bringing up the fox spirit.

However, he was secretly pleased. His competitor was in deep trouble. Even if she managed to resolve this, her business would be significantly affected.

But he was puzzled. He had heard that Dr. Su's medical skills were quite good, better than his for treating minor illnesses like colds. How could she suddenly cause a death?

Could it be that the old lady had some underlying condition that Dr. Su didn't know about, and she prescribed the wrong medicine?

The woman who was cursing pulled out a small white plastic bag, the kind used by small clinics to dispense medicine, and said, "Open your eyes and look carefully. Is this the medicine you prescribed? Is this handwriting yours?"

As she spoke, she grabbed Dr. Su's long hair, pulling her head down, acting very aggressively.

Under normal circumstances, if a beautiful woman was treated this way, there would be men who would step in to protect her. But today, no one dared to get involved.

Some people, instead of helping, even added fuel to the fire, pointing and commenting, "I always said this woman wasn't a good doctor. A doctor who looks like this and dresses up every day, how good could her skills be? Look, now she's caused a death!"

"But you used to come to this clinic whether you were sick or not, didn't you?"

"Who comes here all the time? I'll sue you for defamation!"

"..."

Dr. Su felt her scalp being pulled, and her head was being shaken, causing her to almost cry from the pain.

But she held back her tears. Crying would only make things worse, and no one would sympathize with her or calm the family's anger.

Dr. Su held the woman's hand on her head and said with difficulty, "Let me see the medicine. The medicine I prescribed wouldn't cause death; it's just some common drugs!"

Dr. Su was certain that the old lady had indeed come to her clinic, but she couldn't believe that the medicine she prescribed could cause death!

"Let you see the medicine? Do you think I'm stupid? What if you swallow all the medicine to destroy the evidence?" The woman pulled Dr. Su's hands away and scolded her.

The middle-aged man didn't let go of Dr. Su's arm, pulling her roughly and said, "No more nonsense. My mother is unconscious, and you must save her immediately, or we won't let you off!"

Wearing black stockings and high heels, Dr. Su was pulled off balance and fell to the ground.

If even the city hospital refused to admit the patient, how could she possibly save her?

At this moment, a little girl's cry came from inside the counter. A well-dressed little girl, about five or six years old, came out crying, "Mom... Mom..."

This little girl was Dr. Su's daughter.

Dr. Su, on the verge of tears, still held back. She stood up, holding her daughter's head, and with a pale but determined face, looked at the middle-aged couple and said, "Alright. I don't need the medicine. But we can send the medicine for testing to see if there's a problem and if it could cause death! If the responsibility is mine and the medicine I prescribed caused your mother's condition, I'll accept any punishment!"

The middle-aged couple exchanged a glance, and a hint of unease flashed in their eyes.

They seemed a bit nervous.

But it quickly disappeared.

The woman sneered, "No more nonsense! We don't have time for these formalities. We don't understand medicine, so how can we know if you're lying? The facts are clear; you must take responsibility!"

The middle-aged man, ignoring the little girl's cries, stepped forward and said, "Either cure my mother or pay compensation!"

"Compensation?" Jiang Fei, standing in the crowd, noticed something odd.

The old lady was indeed unconscious and close to death.

But it didn't seem to be due to a medical accident...

Dr. Su, whose mind was in chaos, didn't notice this. With her daughter crying louder, and hearing the couple's offer, she immediately asked, "Compensation? How much?"

The woman's eyes lit up, but she pretended to be sad and angry, "If you can't save my mother-in-law, you must pay 200,000 yuan!"
