Chapter 44 of 100
Chapter 44
15 min read3,722 words
Alan and Kate watched Liu Yunxuan and Michelle interact with great interest. It seemed they should find a chance to ask about Liu Yunxuan's personal situation.
Lunch was delicious and enjoyable. Alan's family didn't rush to leave and sat in Liu Yunxuan's house to drink coffee together.
"Liu Yunxuan, have you ever stocked Asian carp in the lake before?" Liu Yunxuan asked, taking a sip of coffee. He felt that Kate was looking at him strangely.
"Of course not. We don't eat much fish, and Old Hudson doesn't eat fish at all," Alan shook his head without hesitation.
"Then how did such a large Asian carp end up in our lake?" Liu Yunxuan was also puzzled. First, a large turtle appeared, and now they caught such a big fish.
"If it were another type of fish, it might have been there before, but such a large Asian carp is really hard to explain," Alan was equally curious.
At this moment, Kate frowned and said, "Someone once said that this lake is very deep and connected to underground rivers. No matter how dry it gets, the water level in the lake remains the same. Could the fish have come from the underground river?"
"I remember now," Alan slapped his forehead and said, "There was no lake here originally. It was created when a meteorite fell. But that was when I was very young, and I almost forgot about it."
"Nature is truly amazing," Liu Yunxuan sighed.
"Of course, otherwise Texas wouldn't have discovered so many oil fields and natural gas," Michelle affirmed and continued, "Liu, can you fish more often? The fish head today was delicious."
Liu Yunxuan was speechless. He didn't expect a beautiful woman to be a foodie.
"Boss, do you think the large turtle also came from the underground river?" Garcia asked from the side.
"That's impossible. The large turtle is a land turtle; it can't swim," Michelle answered first. When it came to animals, she had authority, even though her major was botany, which involved a lot of zoology.
"Um, maybe, perhaps, the large turtle really did come from the lake," Liu Yunxuan used several uncertain words to finish his sentence. After all, it took courage to contradict a beautiful woman, and Garcia was just drinking coffee after Michelle spoke.
Michelle didn't believe Liu Yunxuan at all. Liu Yunxuan had to take Michelle to the lake. Apart from the tracks leading from the lake, there was nothing else.
Michelle was really shocked. This completely overturned her knowledge.
"Liu, can we keep this news confidential for now? Let me study it first, okay?" Michelle tightly grabbed Liu Yunxuan's arm, not noticing that his arm had entered her personal space.
Liu Yunxuan's face turned red. In college, he studied hard for scholarships and never had a girlfriend. After moving to Jin Tian City, he lived a simple life between work and his dormitory, and had never experienced such a situation.
"Study... study... sure... do whatever you want," Liu Yunxuan was incoherent.
Michelle also noticed Liu Yunxuan's abnormality and realized she had been taken advantage of. Although American girls are more open, it's relative.
Michelle was also embarrassed and quietly let go of Liu Yunxuan's arm.
"Can we try to get the large turtle to swim in the lake?" The atmosphere was too awkward, so Michelle quickly changed the topic.
"Sure, yes, let's try, let it swim," Liu Yunxuan was still savoring the feeling and blurted out Michelle's words without thinking.
"Ha ha," Michelle was amused by Liu Yunxuan's appearance. She should have been more embarrassed, but Liu Yunxuan was even worse.
Hearing Michelle's laughter, Liu Yunxuan's face turned even redder. He felt very embarrassed.
Liu Yunxuan used the carrots from his space to attract the large turtle, which was basking in the sun, to the lake. It took seven carrots to get the turtle to the lake.
When they reached the lake, the large turtle refused to enter the water and just lay there motionless. Liu Yunxuan had to take out another carrot, wave it in front of the turtle's head, and throw it into the lake.
This motivated the turtle, and it quickly walked into the lake and disappeared.
At this point, Michelle truly believed that the large turtle could swim. Otherwise, even if it loved to eat, it wouldn't risk its life. The turtle had clearly lived for many years, and its survival instinct wouldn't let it do dangerous things.
The two waited by the lake for a while, but there was no sign of the turtle.
"Damn, did the large turtle swim away along the river?" Liu Yunxuan slapped his thigh, as he had planned to give the turtle to Fangfang.
Michelle didn't know what to say. If the turtle ran away, what would she study?
They waited a bit longer, but still saw no sign of the turtle. They confirmed that the large turtle had indeed run away.
The two walked back to the villa dejectedly. Seeing their earlier cheerful conversation turn into gloom, it was clear something had happened.
"Did Liu do something to Michelle?" Alan guessed in his heart. After all, daughters are their fathers' little sweaters, and he had planned to bring these two together. Now, with some suspicion, he started to worry.
"Michelle, what's wrong? Why are you so unhappy?" Kate noticed something was off, but it wasn't because of Liu Yunxuan. If it were, Michelle would be angry.
"Mom, the turtle ran away and won't come back. Sob, sob, sob," Michelle couldn't hold back her tears and hugged her mother.
Liu Yunxuan had to recount how he took Michelle to see the tracks by the lake, how they verified that the turtle could swim, and how they waited for a long time but saw no sign of the turtle. Of course, he didn't mention the awkward part.
"Michelle, don't be shy. It's just a turtle. We can get another one," the mischievous Adam added fuel to the fire.
Michelle glared at her brother, "You don't understand. That was the first water-capable tortoise ever discovered by humans, which is very helpful for scientific research. I didn't expect it to run away because of me."
Michelle started crying again.
"Michelle, maybe the turtle will come back after a few days. When I found it, it was stealing vegetables from my garden," Liu Yunxuan comforted her. He felt responsible for attracting the turtle and was also hopeful that the turtle might return, remembering the water in his space.
"Really? Will the turtle come back?" Michelle asked, her big red eyes blinking. Then she seemed to remember something and shook her head, "No, these traveling tortoises rarely stay in one place for long if not captured by humans."
Seeing their daughter cry again, Alan and Kate were at a loss. Their daughter had always been sensible and independent. Only she could resolve her own issues.
